The Shillings - Lying And Trying

This record was huge in New England in late 1966 and early 1967. This song made it to the top 10 on WBZ in Boston, Massachusettes and WLLH in Lowell, Massachusettes and also charted on WHYN in Springfield, Massachusettes. In late 1966 the group even made an appearance on the Brad Davis Show (which aired on WTIC TV in Hartford, Conneticut) to perform this song (in spite of online mentionings to the contrary, even though this side had the higher matrix number, this side was in fact the A side of the single, it was the side that got all the airplay, and plugs in the December 10, 1966 and December 31, 1966 editions of Billboard Magazine). Group members during this time period included Ned Early (drummer), Tom Ross (guitarist and lead singer - sometimes listed as Tom Rose) and Mark Jennings (bassist). Within a year there would be some lineup changes in the band would find themselves based out of Allentown, PA. With distribution of this single being handled by Atco records, this tune should've gotten more national attention and distribution. Unfortunately the label really dropped the ball by not promoting this group on a national level and they also pressed the single on the noisiest vinyl possible.
