VA Inspector General Testifies on New Report

For years, we've heard from IAVA members that the VA is not delivering timely mental health care. This week, the VA's own Inspector General confirmed it. What's worse, the Inspector General found that the VA's own records of wait times "had no real value." Less than half of vets received a full evaluation within 14 days of seeking mental health care—despite VA claims that rate was 95 percent. Helping wounded warriors go back to work

Army 2nd Lieutenant Ryan Kules lost an arm and a leg in Iraq when his vehicle drove over a roadside bomb. The other two soldiers traveling with Kules were killed in the incident. He decided that he would never give up his fight to recover and started running the Warriors to Work program to help others. Kules, now married with a child, assists veterans of recent conflicts in job training programs. He starts by helping them build a resume and follows them all the way through their job search. President-elect Barack Obama recently appointed an injured veteran to head up the Department of Veterans Affairs. Retired Army General Eric Shinseki has been appointed to the position. Shinseki has received full support from the Wounded Warrior Project.

Gen. Eric Shinseki from 02.25.03

On February 25, 2003, four months before the end of his term as Chief of Staff of the Army, Shinseki told the Senate Armed Services Committee that he thought an occupying force of several hundred thousand men would be needed to stabilize postwar Iraq. He was pressed to provide a range by Senator Carl Levin (D-MI). Below is an excerpt from the exchange: SEN. LEVIN: General Shinseki, could you give us some idea as to the magnitude of the Army's force requirement for an occupation of Iraq following a successful completion of the war? GEN. SHINSEKI: In specific numbers, I would have to rely on combatant commanders' exact requirements. But I think -- SEN. LEVIN: How about a range? GEN. SHINSEKI: I would say that what's been mobilized to this point -- something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers are probably, you know, a figure that would be required. We're talking about posthostilities control over a piece of geography that's fairly significant, with the kinds of ethnic tensions that could lead to other problems. And so it takes a significant ground-force presence.
