Salamander 2 (1996 Konami) This is me playing through the sequel to the 1986 Konami SHMUP Salamander (AKA Life Force in the USA). This game continues the theme of mostly bio-themed stages. Also, there is no Gradius power-up bar here. All powerups are represented by icons, and activate upon pickup. A new feature is the homing Option attack. It consumes your regular Options, reducing them to Option Seeds. Two Option Seeds are needed to form one regular Option. Fans of Super Mario Fusion will recognize the Level 1 boss as the infamous Leviathan.

I finally unlocked all the upgrades for the Gummi Ships. I was able to build a very souped up Raiden mk-II as a Gummi to take on this beast of a Gummi mission: Assault on the Dreadnought, Mission 3. Most people I see play this mission take the easy way out and build a "Donut Ship" so that all of the aimed bullets pass right through the hole. I did not want to resort to using a Donut Ship, so I gave the Raiden mk-II Auto-Regen to regain health. I built a Teeny Ship with a Large Shell shield to block those lasers; I can avoid the normal shots by doing barrel rolls. Mission 3 of this Gummi stage has a very hard boss called Hunter-X. It behaves very similar to a Mushihimesama boss, with billions of bullets being showered at you. Standard SHMUP strategies apply here: Lead the bullet streams slowly so that they can be dodged. Getting hit is almost unavoidable in this hard mission, unless you use a Donut Ship... I can't help but think Star Wars when I play this level. It's got an Imperial Star Destroyer/Death Star hybrid, fleets of space warship, and even the music has that "space opera" feel of John Williams' Star Wars score. It has the strafing run on the surface of the dreadnought, the run inside the corridors, the assault on the core, and even a planet-busting weapon like the Death Star. You might be wondering why I bothered with this when one could easily see the game's endings over at Zany Video Game Quotes. Well, this is more than just a vidcap of all the character endings in English; they've also been dubbed with the voice acting from the Saturn version of the game. So this vid features not only silly SNKglish, but Japanese voices as well. This is pretty much the closest we'll ever get to an English version of the Saturn game, so feel free to sit back and enjoy. Team SHMUPS is back with its own series, and ready to take on the meanest bosses in MUGEN! Team SHMUPS ventures to Dracula's Castle in Castlevania to take on four tough bosses! The targets in this boss rush:Omega Tiger Woods, old version (Most_Mysterious): Massive projectile attacks make OTW a very good SHMUP-style boss. Weaving in between streams of OTW's aimed sparks is like good old Raiden DX and trying to weave in between those two tanks' same attack in Mission Alpha. For a challenge, I used R-9 and did not upgrade its firepower at all; just R-9 and its trusty Wave Cannon. Alien Queen (HSR): Taking on the Queen with R-9 is just like the classic R-Type showdown between R-9 and the Alien-like boss, Dobkeratops. The Queen has Hyper Armor, but continued attacks on her causes her to jump backwards. Skullman (the_none): I forgot where this character came from, but judging by its looks, it came out of an early 90s PC game. Skullman has an asston of strikers: hover vehicles, tiny terrorists, a giant robotand even Shaquille O'Neal. It's basically a combination of all of MM's past works. As a normal fighting game character, it's very difficult to fight Skullman. Two floating hands disrupt your rhythm. If that's not bad enough, a giant duck comes out and pummels you. In this small stage, it's unavoidable as the SHMUP ships. To add to the overkill, the head transforms into a phantom fighter who throws 1979 Asteroids as projectiles and, you guessed it, even has a Shun Goku Satsu <b>...</b>

I have two words to describe this battle: Holy crap. This entire fight against one character lasted this long, so this time, this SHMUPS MUGEN video is just a single boss fight. It took me 3 hours to learn Remilia's attacks and counteract them using Styx. I had to strategically select which weapons to use during different points in the fight. Enter Remilia Scarlet by Kuri. If you are a glutton for punishment, get Remilia at: takesi2.hp.infoseek.co.jp (Fourth character down) Get the SHMUP ships at: kalex.hp.infoseek.co.jp (download links are on the far right) If you thought Marisa Kirisame was a tough cookie, you have not seen Remilia. Remilia makes Marisa look like a baby in comparison. Remilia is the final boss of the Touhou game Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, and it damn shows here in her MUGEN incarnation of her Immaterial and Missing Power version.She has six forms of attack. Her "zero" form is a standard fighting game character. Here is a description of her next five forms, four of which come from her Story mode Spellcards from IaMP: Form 1: First Card (Bad Lady Scramble) - Remilia is invincible, rushing in every direction trailing a wake of shockwaves and bullets. She can only be hurt if she lands for a brief period. Form 2: Second Card (My Heartbreak) - Remilia gains almost total invincibility. She generates a giant energy spear that, when thrown, shoots a shower of bullets in one of two directions. You can tell which direction she will shoot by looking at the <b>...</b>

The Gummi Ship sequences in KH2 is vastly improved over those in the first gam...e. Instead of it being an annoying extra like in the first Kingdom Hearts, the Gummi sequences in the second game is a whole game in itself! The Vic Viper from Gradius is the next SHMUP ship to be given the Gummi treatment. I know that someone made a Vic Viper Gummi before, and the video is on YouTube. However, the builder did not do a blueprint overview, which I did here, so that others can recreate the ship for themselves. I also created the Options as Teeny Ships. I take Vic Viper for a spin at Ancient Highway, Medal Hunt. I gave the Vic Viper the ability to change its Teeny Ship formations. One such formation is the classic shadow formation of the real Options.

Taking a look at the 1990 Capcom shmup '1941 Counter attack'. This game was originally released on the CPS-1 system that is very similar to the Megadrive, Genesis, AtariST, Amiga, Neogeo range of systems that were out there back in the day. The combo motorola 68000 and zilog Z80 is found in a lot of the systems back in the day.

Here is my list of the top ten greatest vertical shooter games for MAME. I am aware of the fact that some games are not included on here, for example great games such as Shikigami No Shiro, Ray Storm, Soukyugurentai etc.. the reason is because at this time the emulation on MAME is not perfect for these games and they still have minor performance issues. The games I have chosen for this list are ones that run pretty much arcade-perfect. So in other words this is basically my top ten list of 'shoot em ups for MAME that scroll vertically, and run flawlessly' :) What do you think? What's your personal top 10? Please leave a comment. Doujin shooters are independently produced Japanese shoot em up games for the PC. These are freeware trial games or legitimate full versions available on the net. Check them out! Cho Ren Sha 68k, Nomltest_FW, Kamui, Reincarnation, RefleX, Rrootage, Solid State Survivor and Tails Gear. I like these because they are all remininscent of classic shoot em ups.
