Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: Kel-Tec Moves To World Domination

You might find some good laughs and perhaps some fun in this Nutnfancy Kel-Tec 20111 product update. But as you've come to expect, I stay on target and hit the details like no other. The good, the bad, and the outstanding high points of Kel-Tec are discussed here. Chad from Kel-Tec is especially cool and turns out to be another Gold Star host for TNP. He rolls in most excellent fashion with the Nutnfancy style as we delve into yet more Kel-Tec impressive innovation. Namely their 26″ 12 gauge bullpup shotgun that will carry 14+1 rounds. Weighing in at a respectable 6.9 lbs, the Kel-Tec KSG-12 seems compact, fast, and sets new standards of PUMP shotgun firepower. The innovative KSG features include on-the-fly user-selectable magazines (each holding 7 2 ¾" rds), magazine cutoff ability for loading single rounds, plenty of railing for accessories and a VG, different colors, sling attachment points, and has screw-in cokes. If it's everything it seems to be the KSG will be another slam dunk seller for KT and the crew (and of course probably impossible to find for the next year). Also we check out the also impressive RMR-30 .22 WMG semi-auto carbine. In conversations with Kel-Tec, this is a gun I wanted them to make. It fills a distinct niche in as a lightweight, high-value survival/bug-out rifle with substantial firepower. And it uses the more-affordable and yet potent-enough .22 WMG (not the very expensive and flatlined 5.7x28mm). It seems to still be in development and expect <b>...</b>

Nutnfancy at SHOT Show 2010: SIG SAUER

A Nutnfancy style of visit to the Sig Sauer booth at the Las Vegas 210 SHOT show! Sig Product Manager Eric Vonbosse is our escort as we talk about many guns in the 2010 SIg product line. And like my other booth visits, I don't just provide a product promotion opportunity for Sig (boring) but instead keep it REAL with product feedback, tie-ins with previous Nutnfancy reviews and testing, kudos where appropriate (lots of places!), and interjecting my own improvement advice at times. First up: we check out the Sig P226 "E2" Enhanced Ergonomics pistol which accommodates hands of smaller shooters. It seems to have a very CZ-75 style of grip that these shooters will love. Add in a short reset trigger, screwless one piece grip (that can also accept regular P226 grips as well...nice!), upgraded grip texture, and updated slide profile for the E2 as well. Despite the large crowd at the booth and the noise, we wind our way through and check out and discuss many other Sig Sauer guns including the Sig P238, Sig556, the Sig716, the Sig522, and P250. The P238 continues to be a hot seller with the "Rainbow" titanium, "Equinox" (with excellent tritium fiber optic sights), dehorned "SAS" model, and "Heavy Duty" steel models now being offered (subject to change). The Sig556 has lost its goofy and bulbous forend and now wears either a alloy quad rail or the slim and very ergonomic classic Sig forend (my favorite). Weights are decent at about 7.5 lbs but both wear thin profile barrels. A new <b>...</b>

Nutnfancy SHOT Show: Blackhawk!

Blackhawk makes quality stuff. I know because I've personally used it hard and it has never failed me. Also, unlike some other manufacturers who price some of their tactical nylon in the stratosphere, there are several examples of tactical nylon within Blackhawk nylon that remain affordable. This high value formula has brought success and allowed expansion into other tactical items such as knives, clothing, holsters, slings, gloves, lighting products (a bit $), and gun accessories. There's lots to see in the expansive Blackhawk 2010 SHOT Show booth and I do my best hitting the highpoints of the gear. But true to the Nutnfancy way, this isn't just a free mike for the manufacturer but a chance to discuss some criticisms, high points, and pricing of the Blackhawk gear as I see it. Our host is Blackhawk's VP of Marketing Terry Naughton and he is knowledgeable on his merchandise and did a good job of fielding the questions, even the tough ones, that I posed. With many of their items Blackhawk, adheres to their original high value formula and lots of their tactical nylon items are as good as any in the world and yet won't break your bank account. Their "Omega Crossdraw" and other vests are still outstanding (although prices have crept up over the years) and they come in excellent colorations (their shade of Desert Earth is the best out there). These ready-to-go vests will offer most dudes a lower cost complete LBE system that won't need additional pouches. And there are many <b>...</b>

Nutnfancy at SHOT Show: MICROTECH

A visit with Anthony Marfione Jr., son of Microtech owner and founder. We talk about the Microtech history, their different models, the passion of knifemaking, design, 2nd type of cool, their no-compromise philosophy, the MSAR STG-556, and about the best Christmas movie ever. Nutnfancy SHOT Show: Smith and Wesson!

Another Nunfancy 2010 SHOT Show adventure! An in-depth hit on all things Smith and Wesson including summaries of the M&P 15-22 .22s (the MOE version is an improvement), M&P15 rifles (the M&P 15PSX with Troy Industries TRX low profile handguard is impressive), the brand new "Bodyguard 380" (great design it seems) and "Bodyguard 38" line, the Performance Center revolvers, the Walther line, the S&W 1911s (I dig that 1911PD), several of the Classic revolvers, the .22s (I want the 317 Airlite but so much $$), and the excellent M&P pistol lineup (rapidly becoming another Nutnfancy favorite in my tactical shooting...smooth and fast!). So many fine firearms in the expansive booth, it was all I could do to show you what I did...lots of work and very little time to do it. S&W prices many of their guns on the high side I say but their quality is indisputable as we see again here. Most S&Ws last several lifetimes, are accurate, have enduring, well-proven designs, and give great pride of ownership. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: Beretta Set to Embarrass ACR!

Beretta swoops in from left field with the seemingly excellent ARX160 tactical carbine, set to come ashore sometime in the future. Here's a first look at this impressive little 6.5 lb carbine lb (about time someone other than Kel-Tec got the weight right!). Here you will see us check out some of its cool features: seriously quick-change barrels (which have medium profile), inside-trigger-guard bolt release, no tool takedown, on-the-fly ambi bolt handle and ejection selection (wow), ambi safety, constant-engagement piston (no carrier tilt here), full railing, and excellent balance and trigger. Granted this is a first look and the proof lies in the shooting to discover the real ergos, accuracy, and durability. But all things are looking up with the impressive ARX160, especially its slated $1500-$1700 street price (subject to change). That puts it in the same value ballpark as a Ruger SR-556. In terms of weight, simplicity of design, and value it seems like it could deliver all the things the ACR and SCAR (value) series have not. Downsides might be the thicker handguard, the slim pistol grip, and limited adjustable stock; all of which might change in the production version. The ARX160 could be a big win for Beretta. Also we manage to get the admission that a .22 ARX version IS on the way as well. In the vid and here, I admonish Beretta to look carefully at the Sig 522 on how to make such a gun reliable with most ammo; dual stainless rails on which a highly polished bolt <b>...</b>

Nutnfancy SHOT Show: ARSENAL AKs!

Come on along for an exciting visit to the ARSENAL booth, ala Nutnfancy style, at the 2010 SHOT Show in Las Vegas. If you are like me, you will come away from this Arsenal visit wanting one of these AKs. Our host is Arsenal Sales Director Walker English. He speaks with authority of his AKs and demonstrates the impressive quality levels achieved in the Arsenal AK-variants. The previously-discussed AK vs AR-15 considerations still are applicable but the AK with its amazing reliability, toughness, simplicity, and COOL factor holds MUCH attraction (for me too). Shown in the video are the ARSENAL SGL21-72 (very cool plum colored stock set, NATO length), SGL21-63 (equally cool OD stocks, NATO), SLR 106-33 (5.56x45, in photo), SA RPK-7 (wow, which they could make it, expect it be $$$ if they do though), the gorgeous blond wood equipped SA and SAS M-7 Classics (milled receivers, flawless execution, expensive!), Bulgarian SLR106-34 (skeleton folding stock, Warsaw length), SLR 107-F (side folding 7.62x39mm AK-variant, seen in my AK vs AR-15 vids!), SLR106-31 (full stock, Warsaw length), SGL31 varieties (5.45x39.5mm, Warsaw Pact length stocks), and some others. What makes the Arsenals stand out? Quality, attention to detail, and observation of many of the AK/AKM design features that ensure longevity, accuracy, and higher levels of authenticity. Nutnfancy SHOT Show: Marlin!

The one-of-a-kind Marlin 39AS .22 lever action is the oldest, continuously-produced shoulder firearm design in th world. It is milled from solid steel forgings and heat treated for ultimate strength. And that's for a .22! It is the best made, most collectible, most accurate, coolest, and highest quality .22 lever action being sold. It is one of my top recommendations as heirloom quality rifle to give to your children and family members. But good luck finding one. Because like many of Marlin's guns, they sell, sell, sell and their availability within the past few years has been scarce. Don't fault Marlin as they have been cranking the production lines as best they can. Credit good designs that connect with guys, high value, outstanding workmanship, and excellent accuracy. That's Marlin. I know because I've been shooting and testing Marlins ever since high school. In the swamps of Alabama in my many hunting adventures, I found their Model 60 .22 to be a reliable and cost effective performer that's fun and deadly accurate. Its also lightweight (5.5 lbs), super affordable, and has been issued in some amazingly cool laminated and walnut stock editions (like the blue laminated version and the nice walnut-stocked 50th Anniversay Model 60 .22 shown!). Their Model 795 .22 and Model 70PSS Papoose (reviewed) semi-auto rifle are some of the best, highest value .22 autos out there. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: "Kershaw Win"

Kershaw's slamming one out of the park for 2011. Tons of great blades that I'm interested in are shown here in this 2011 Nutnfancy SHOT Show booth review with most excellent host Jenn and "anonymous girl to my left." TNP Crew member PFIDude and I cover some great steel here and have fun doing it. Most impressive are the quality levels and fair prices of these outstanding Kershaw knives. We were really wanting that Kershaw 7000 auto knife as well...will score one later for sure. It's a solid 10 (and it's been around awhile). Look to the tags below for some of the knives covered; some more in depth perhaps later. Great job Jenn and the Kershaw crew! //////////////////// Music: Licensed to TNP from www.torley.com

Nutnfancy 2011 SHOT Show: Victorinox!

Best treats award of SHOT 2011 goes to Victorinox for their awesome Lindt & Sprungli (Lindor) chocolate they had at the booth. Awesome! No we didn't take it all but we had some fun with it. Once passed that pleasant distraction, we get to work with some new Victorinox offerings. I'm a huge fan of the Victorinox blades and their high value, long term durability, and function make them a favorite all over the world. Witness the new 54839 Dual Pro X one-handed utility knife. It offers similar capes to the 53900 Victorinox Rescue Tool which is a win on most accounts. I will lack a replaceable disc saw and the window breaker but has, in many people's eyes (mine too), the added advantage of a plain edge blade. It and several other similar knives feature a dual-density red handle. Also discussed are new Classic colorations, a desert Camo Huntsman, some other special editions, the Swisstools, and the Rescue. Becky does a great job as host. Thanks also to PFIDude and his Dad (PFIDad) for coming along! Great blades, great utility, cool colors, and superb quality for less. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: Now That's a Tactical .22!

Make your 10/22 into an M4. Yes, there's been attempts at that already but I think the new Troy T-22 10/22 "Sport" Chassis is the best I've seen. Features are impressive: super lightweight (someone's paying attention), trim handguard ala TRX, positionable rails, integrated flip-up sights, no flex (unlike some polymer options), single point sling attachment, and it takes AR-15 handgrips and buttstocks. The only detectable downside is the cost: it's up there at around $300 retail. I suspect it will come out in desert tan colors as well as it takes off. Unlike the heavy 6.5 lb Ruger SR-22, the Troy T-22 gets the M4 mimicry correct and fulfills all the requirements for the Tactical .22 ( www.youtube.com ). TNPr James does a great job at hosting this Nutnfancy visit to Troy as we hit the details on the Troy lineup. The new Troy Alpha Battlerail is an upgraded TRX that fixes some of the strength issues they've identified. As I said in SHOT 2010, the TRX sets the industry standard in thinness, lightweight, and pointability and remains a competitor favorite. The VTAC version is similiar with elongated slots; I prefer the standard Troy with the circle milling. Battlerails and integrated chassis are also available for some surprising guns like the VZ-58 (shown, also DPMS LR-308, Mini-14 MCS, all xlnt but $$) and probably more will come out. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: "The Leatherman Way"

Leatherman breaks ground with two new, super high value multi-tools for 2011: the Sidekick and the Wingman. Each has a useful and impressive tool loadout, small size, light weight, and amazingly affordable price for a US made MT. Well done! With Leatherman host Brad, we take some close looks at these MTs and many others in the Leatherman line up. My enthusiasm remains high as it ever has been for the outstanding Juice S2, the Wave, the Charge, the SuperTool 300, the Surge, Blast, Fuse, and Kick multi-tools and they remain standard setting in many ways. The newly re-designed Squirt ES4 integrates scissors AND mini-pliers, a design feature I campaigned for years ago. The PFIDude/PFIFDAD team come along for the fun as we discuss the ins and outs of these excellent pocket tools. Along the way we discuss features we like and even have Brad do a mini-review on the Leatherman MUT. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: The Buck Hoodlum, Big Steel!

It was refreshing to meet Ron Hood. Here's a man that understands the benefits of a big blade for woods use. Unlike some others, he's unaplogetic about big blades and has lots of experience to back up his opinions and approach to design. We cover just that in this Nutnfancy Buck Knives booth review as the "bouncers" help us keep the booth sanitized for the review (great job)! Ron is a character and fun to talk to. But with all that personality comes an understanding of woodscraft and how to minimize work out there...the same thing I've been advocating and showing in TNP for years. His "Hoodlum" knife features a 22 oz carry weight, 10 inch .22" thickness 5160 spring steel, a highly refined handle, utility notch, deep choils and jimping on a thumb ramp (huge win for this design), a handsome grey powder coating, comfortable and removeable G10 scales, and a good sheath. We talk about its features and create some laughs along the way. This knife seems like a win in most ways (especially in carry weight for such a large blade), especially if you can score it around $150. Of course its excellence and chopping performance would have to be confirmed in TNP testing. Mike steps on up too and weighs in with updates on the Bantam, Vantage, a Tops collaboration, and Avid lines. The Vantage line continues to impress me with its coolness: check out the sculpted aluminum and navy blue/black G10 handles and blackened blades in the new models. Nutnfancy SHOT Show 2011: Glock 4th Gen Questions

Is the Glock 17 4th jacked or not? I raise that question in this Nutnfancy SHOT 2011 Booth review with their rep Mike McAvoy. Some say it's great (so does Glock...I think), some say it's broken. Re-inventing something that was functioning perfectly does carry some baggage. I have said in past vids over a year ago that a major component re-design like the double captive recoil spring on the 9mm Glock versions was not necessary and will re-set the gun's long-proven reliability record. This version is proving itself now and that will take time. In the hands of agencies, officers, and civilians around the world are amassing that data right. I will get rounds on one or two as time goes on but it will just be single data point. It seems however that the 4th Gen Glock's are not enjoying a resounding "It's awesome" round of applause so far. The spring upgrades were intended to cure the .40 S&W versions' reliability and frame flex with weapon lights and those too are getting re-proven. However in the 4th Gens, some good improvements do come along for the ride: larger mag release, perfect grip texturing, and interchangeable backstraps (really not necessary however for most hands I think; the larger beavertail extension will help the big fellas). The limited edition 4th Gen G17 is intriguing but of course it's a bummer the OD frame version is no longer being made (preferred). A few other versions like the Glock 36 are also discussed with SadlyMissing and Mike. However, if I'm <b>...</b>

A mashup of 2010 footage with the latest announcement from AR15.Com. 2011 will bring special coverage to the show, coverage we plan to bring to you each year. AR15.Com has a special media room setup for pre-show interviews with industry representatives, who will discuss and showcase their new additions for 2011 as well as their popular products. These segments will be shot before the show floor opens and shared with you the night before. Companies who do not make our pre-show shoots, will have videos shot on our stage the first day of the show or we will shoot shorter segments on the show floor. This will open up our coverage, improve quality, and allow us to have one on one discussions with the biggest names in the industry. Special thanks to NSSF and to our video sponsor, Brownells. We will be shooting with their support and help to ensure the highest quality.
