Sicily

Ferries to Sicily: ferriessicily.com Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. Minor islands around it are also considered to be part of Sicily. Throughout much of its history, Sicily has been considered a crucial strategic location due in large part to its importance for Mediterranean trade routes. The area was highly regarded as part of Magna Graecia, with Cicero describing Siracusa as the greatest and most beautiful city of all Ancient Greece. The island was once a city-state in its own right, and as the Kingdom of Sicily ruled from Palermo over southern Italy, Sicily, and Malta. It later became a part of the Two Sicilies under the Bourbons, a kingdom governed from Naples that comprised both the island itself and most of Southern Italy. The Italian unification of 1860 led to the dissolution of this kingdom, and Sicily became an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Italy. Sicily is today an autonomous region of Italy. Of all the regions of Italy, Sicily covers the largest land area at 25708 square kilometres (9926 sq mi) and currently has just over five million inhabitants. ( source Wikipedia ) Sicily has its own rich and unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, music, literature, cuisine, architecture and language, having given birth to some of the greatest and most influential people in history. The Sicilian economy is largely based on agriculture (mainly orange and lemon orchards); this same rural countryside has ...

Sensational Sicily

Sicily is directly adjacent to the region of Calabria via the Strait of Messina to the east. The early Roman name for Sicily was Trinacria, alluding to its triangular shape. The Sensational Sicily Project www.SensationalSicily.com is a collaboration with the Region of Sicily, The Italian Chamber of Commerce, Alessandro Sorbello Productions http and New Realm Media www.newrealm.com.au The volcano Etna, situated close to Catania, is 3320 m (10900 ft) high, making it the tallest active volcano in Europe. It is also one of the world's most active volcanoes. The Aeolian islands to the north are administratively a part of Sicily, as are the Aegadian Islands and Pantelleria Island to the west, Ustica Island to the north-west, and the Pelagian Islands to the south-west. Sicily has been noted for two millennia as a grain-producing territory. Oranges, lemons, olives, olive oil, almonds, and wine are among its other agricultural products. The mines of the Enna and Caltanissetta district became a leading sulfur-producing area in the 19th century but have declined since the 1950s. http Sicily is divided into nine provinces: Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, Syracuse (Siracusa), Trapani History The original inhabitants of Sicily, long absorbed into the population, were tribes known to Greek writers as the Elymians, the Sicani and the Siculi or Sicels. Of these, the last were clearly the latest to arrive on this land and were related to other Italic ...

Sicily Clocks Mysteriously JUMP 15-20 Minutes Forward - June 10, 2011

Completely obscure but I found this info first at www.awaker.net Upon research saw that it was posted in several forums and alternative news blogs, this is the only video I was able to find of it from an actual news source 0.0 "Sicilians are not normally renowned for their punctuality but something strange is afoot that's making them turn up early for work. Hundreds of digital clocks on the island are running more than 15 minutes fast and no-one is quite sure why. The phenomenon has left people scratching their heads for weeks and several theories have been put forward involving aliens, poltergeists, volcanic activity on Mount Etna and solar explosions. Armageddonists are pointing to further proof of the imminent end of the world. The town of Catania lies at the heart of the mystery and two young locals have set up a facebook page calling for those affected to come forward. One of them, Francesco Nicosia, told French online magazine Rue89 "I realised something was wrong when I started getting to work earlier. After some investigation I noticed that I wasn't the only one who was on time, which is quite rare here in Sicily." This isn't the first time the island has experienced strange goings on linked to electronic devices several years ago electronic equipment started spontaneously catching fire across the rural countryside, reports Rue89. Among the most credible explanations is electrical disturbance caused by underwater cables that have been undergoing maintenance, but ...

Sicilian cannoli - Italian recipe

Finally, Sonia shows us the recipe for the famous Sicilian cannoli, crispy shells filled with a tempting ricotta filling... try and make them at home! *** Today we'll hop over to Sicily to prepare one of the best and famous desserts of this amazing island: the cannoli. It's very hard to resist this delicacy made of a crispy shell filled with a tempting ricotta cream filling. They're not difficult to make at home, just get hold of the special metal tubes. Let's see together what ingredients we'll need: For the cannoli shells, we'll have: • 2 cups (250 g) of flour • 2 tbsp (30 g) of white-wine vinegar • 2 tbsp (30 g) of Marsala wine • ¼ cup (30 g) of powdered sugar • 1 tsp of powdered cinnamon • 1 tsp of salt • 1 tsp of coffee powder • 1 tbsp (5 g) of unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 medium egg weighing about 1,8 oz out of the shell / ¼ cup (50 g) of lard with regard to the filling, we'll have: • 3 cups (750 g) of sheep ricotta cheese • 2/3 cup (75 g) of dark chocolate chips • 1 ½ cups (300 g) of sugar / candied cherries for garnishing • peanut seed oil for frying or, according to tradition, lard Let's go prepare the Sicilian cannoli: First of all, put the ricotta cheese in a strainer to drain and let it stay in the fridge. In a bowl sift the flour, add the salt and sift all the other powders; then add the lard, the egg, and the liquids, but keep in mind that the resulting dough should be soft and firm, therefore you may not need to use all the liquids, it depends a lot on how ...

Travel Sicily: Taormina, Siracusa, Mt. Etna

Language study travel is one of my favourite ways of travelling. In May of 2007 I spent one week in Taormina, one of Sicily's most beautiful towns. Together with an international crew of students I studied Italian at the Babilonia Language School and we went on a variety of excursions throughout Sicily, including the ancient town of Siracusa. I was also fascinated by Mount Etna, Sicily's most imposing topographical feature. Sicily, an ancient mysterious island, is definitely one of the most fascinating places I have ever been to.

How the US reinstated the Sicilian Mafia part 1 of 5

www.facebook.com www.ceepackaging.com http During WW2 US authorities seek the help of organised crime in order to combat a perceived threat from Axis spies. After the Casablanca conference, the invasion of Sicily was planned and the assistance of the mafia was once more required - and the effects of this action were still being felt in Italy forty years later. This film dates from around 1992. I am happy to say that Leoluca Orlando is still alive. Orlando was born in Palermo. He studied in Germany and the UK, graduated in jurisprudence and worked as lawyer and professor in the University of Palermo. He was a member of Christian Democracy (DC), in the left wing of the party. He entered politics in 1976 as legal adviser to Christian Democratic reformer Piersanti Mattarella, who became president of the Sicilian Region in 1978. The two men set out to break the Mafia's hold on the island, transferring budget authority from the corrupt regional government back to the cities and passing a law enforcing the same building standards used in the rest of Italy, thereby making the Mafia's building schemes illegal. In retaliation, the Mafia killed Mattarella in January 1980. The brother of Mattarella and other associates urged him to run for the Palermo municipal council, he ran successfully, and was elected mayor by the town council in 1985.[1] From 1985-1990 he was elected mayor of Palermo, and received many threats as a result of his open opposition to the power of the Mafia in the ...
