The Great Train Robbery - 1903 Silent Film

The Great Train Robbery - an action / western film. Film description from the Edison Films Catalogue, No. 200, Jan. 1904: "This sensational and highly tragic subject will certainly make a decided `hit' whenever shown. In every respect we consider it absolutely the superior of any moving picture ever made. It has been posed and acted in faithful duplication of the genuine `Hold Ups' made famous by various outlaw bands in the far West, and only recently the East has been shocked by several crimes of the frontier order, which fact will increase the popular interest in this great Headline Attraction. Scene 1 — Interior of railroad telegraph office. Two masked robbers enter and compel the operator to set the `signal block' to stop the approaching train, also making him write an order to the engineer to take water at this station.... Scene 2 — At the railroad water tank. The bandit band are seen hiding behind the tank as a train stops to take water (according to false order). Just before she pulls out they stealthily board the train between the express car and the tender. Scene 3 — Interior of express car.... the two robbers have succeeded in effecting an entrance. They enter cautiously. The messenger opens fire on them. A desperate pistol duel takes place, in which the messenger is killed. One of the robbers stands watch while the other tries to open the treasure box. Finding it locked, he searches the messenger for the key. Not finding it, he blows the safe up with dynamite <b>...</b>

Alice in Wonderland (1903)

The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet. With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years. Music: 'Jill in the Box', composed and performed by Wendy Hiscocks. This restoration was supported by The Headley Trust and The Pilgrim Trust. This was a slightly scandalous film when it was released. An early work of Cecil DeMille's that had to do with infidelity and interracial relationships back in 1915. it still stands as one of the best silent films out there. The Little Match Girl (Danish: Den Lille Pige med Svovlstikkerne, meaning "The little girl with the matchsticks") is a short story by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen. The story is about a dying child's dreams and hope, and was first published in 1845. It has been adapted to various media including animated film, and a television musical. On a cold New Year's Eve, a poor girl tries to sell matches in the street. She is freezing badly, but she is afraid to go home because her father will beat her for not selling any matches. She takes shelter in a nook and lights the matches to warm herself. In their glow, she sees several lovely visions including a Christmas tree and a holiday feast. The girl looks skyward, sees a shooting star, and remembers her deceased grandmother saying that such a falling star means someone died and is going into Heaven. As she lights her next match, she sees a vision of her grandmother, the only person to have treated her with love and kindness. She strikes one match after another to keep the vision of her grandmother nearby for as long as she can. The child dies and her grandmother carries her soul to Heaven. The next morning, passers-by find the dead child in the nook. The source for the story was a widely popular woodcut illustration by the Danish artist Johan <b>...</b>

The Unfortunate: A Silent Film

In honor of old, black and white, silent horror films, Sleepy Man Productions presents "The Unfortunate: A Silent Film." This short story is about a robber that ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time. I also tried to pay some respect to Alfred Hitchcock in this one. I made this film completely on my own with a flip camera, crappy basic editing software, and each shot was done in only one take. With that said, I think it turned out pretty well.

"I am experimenting upon an instrument which does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear, which is the recording and reproduction of things in motion..." --Thomas A. Edison, 1888 This simple short feature, pleasant and fun to watch, includes great outdoor photography by Edwin S. Porter. With plenty of energy, and the actors clearly had a good time being part of the film. Two groups of young women going on a 'straw ride' in the snow, with things gradually becoming increasingly boisterous as numerous other persons join in. Except perhaps for the clothing styles and the horse-drawn vehicles, it could have been filmed today, since these kinds of antics in the snow are common in pretty much any time and place that has a cold winter. Edison's laboratory was responsible for the invention of the Kinetograph (a motion picture camera) and the Kinetoscope (a peep-hole motion picture viewer). Most of this work was performed by Edison's assistant, William Kennedy Laurie Dickson, beginning in 1888. Motion pictures became a successful entertainment industry in less than a decade, with single-viewer Kinetoscopes giving way to films projected for mass audiences. The Edison Manufacturing Co. "Silent Era" Back to the Future - Doc Brown to the Rescue

This was my very first attempt ever using Adobe Premiere to edit a video, so please be kind in the comments. I created this video for the ds106 assignment, "Return to the Silent Era". After the huge success that "The Artist" had last year, and at the academy awards, it only seemed fitting that people start turning modern classics into "silent era" films. I figured "Back to the Future" would work nicely, especially the train rescue scene at the end of the 3rd movie in the series. ds106 assignment "Return to the Silent Era" - assignments.ds106.us Media used to put together this video: "Back to the Future" video clip of train chase - www.youtube.com "Particle Illusion" film grain effect - www.stevengotz.com "Silent Movie Title Card" - www.copycatfilms.com "Iron Horse Distressed" & "Merry Go Distressed" piano music - incompetech.com Flux Capacitor Image - profile.ak.fbcdn.net

Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film - 01 The Pioneers

Episode 1 of 13. Download Links: rapidshare.com rapidshare.com rapidshare.com rapidshare.com Here is the definitive video history of the art of the American silent film. This 13-episode documentary was literally produced in the nick of time, as many of those interviewed would be deceased in a few short years - their wonderful memories lost forever. Produced in 1980 for Thames Television, this is certainly one of the crowning achievements of the British team of Kevin Brownlow & David Gill, who together have done so much to preserve not only the history of silent cinema, but also the actual films themselves. The one great lesson of the series is that non-talking films were a distinct art form, complete & satisfying, which had developed a universal language, understood everywhere, through the perfected medium of mime. This was all swept away with the arrival of Talk. So complete was the dismissal of silent films (which were never really silent) that within a short period of time they would be disparaged as intrinsically valueless & technically inferior. As HOLLYWOOD triumphantly shows, nothing could have been further from the truth. Films of enormous expertise & intense emotional impact were almost routinely created by the pioneers who were perfecting their new invention. The achievements of Silent Cinema's 35 years constitute a new cultural renaissance. Episodes focus on such topics as Westerns, comedies, war films, stunts, camera techniques & scandals. Not only do we hear <b>...</b>

Content provided by permission of the author of Sarah Bernhardt, Her Films, Her Recordings (Foreword by Academy Award-Winning Film Historian Kevin Brownlow). Sarah Bernhardt was called the world's greatest actress. She appeared in one of the earliest sound motion pictures. She spoke on one of Thomas Edison's earliest recordings. She earned a place in motion picture history with her early sound film, Le Duel d'Hamlet, and her silent movies, Adrienne Lecouvreur, Camille, and Queen Elizabeth. Historians credit her with leading the way for other stars to appear in films in an era when the movies were considered beneath the dignity of a respectable performer. The new book includes detailed analyses of her films, hundreds of rare photographs, plot synopses, casts, contemporary reviews, and production notes. In a revised and expanded version of the brilliant Sarah Bernhardt in the Theater of Films and Sound Recordings, Sarah Bernhardt's unforgettable story is retold during Paramount Pictures' Centennial celebration by esteemed Pulitzer nominee David W. The Artist- Facts on the Silent Movie

bit.ly - Click to Subscribe! Facebook.com - Become a Fan! Twitter.com - Follow Us! Hey guys, Tatiana carrier here with clevver movies and in honor of the artist, I thought I would share 5 Interesting Facts about the silent flick that is making a lot of noise in hollywood! . 1. Director Michel Hazanavicius, 44, fantasized about making a silent film for many years, both for the image-driven nature of the format and because many of his favorite filmmakers emerged in that era. 2. Hazanavicius studied many silent films to find the right technique in order to make the story comprehensible without the use of too many title cards. 3. The dog actor in the film, Uggy, won the Palm Dog Award for best canine at the Cannes Film Festival in France. The honor can be awarded to live or animated dogs or a group of dogs in films presented at the festival. (The name of the award is a pun on the Palme d'Or, the festival's highest honor). 'Up''s Dug is a previous winner. 4. The stars of the film, Berenice Bejo and Jean Dujardin, had to learn to act in an 80-year-old style that has not really been used since the 1920s, and they both had to learn to tap-dance at a professional level for the film. 5. The Weinstein Company's publicity strategy of plugging 'The Artist' into every film festival and letting word-of-mouth seems to be working. The film has won audience awards in at least three film festivals around the world so far. . Well there ya have it! 5 facts I bet ya didn't already know about <b>...</b>

Ben Hur is a 1907 silent film, the first film version of Lew Wallace's novel Ben-Hur, one of the best-selling books at that time. The film was directed by Canadian director Sidney Olcott. The focus of the piece was the chariot race, which was filmed on a beach in New Jersey with local firemen playing the charioteers and the horses that normally pulled the fire wagons pulling the chariots.

DIGITAL RESTORATION Silent Film "The Flying Scotsman" (1929)

With the advent of digital technology, many early films are now being seen in a quality unimaginable even just a few years ago. Here are two versions of a scene from the 1929 film "The Flying Scotsman" - the first from a VHS tape issue from the 1980s, and then the same scene from the newly remastered dvd release from Optimum. The clarity of the restored version of this film is just breathtaking, especially for anyone familiar with the old copy that circulated for many years. Please keep watching the clip to the end to appreciate the difference - it is quite staggering. Let's hope that more of our film heritage will get a similar treatment and that more will get a commercial release such as "The Flying Scotsman". The film was made in 1929 and includes much footage of the famous locomotive in action. It was also the screen debut of Ray Milland, and the cast also included Moore Marriott (of Will Hay fame) and Pauline Johnson who are seen in this clip. Originally filmed as a silent, some scenes with dialogue added were re-shot when the film was edited for sound in 1930. These sequences are all included in the new transfer. Available now from Optimum, this dvd is an absolute must for lovers of silent film and steam engines alike!

Silent film piano music by JS Zamecnik (1) / Muzyka do kina niemego

JS Zamecnik - was a remarkably prolific American composer of the early 20th century, and was a major composer of "photoplay music," the vast, forgotten genre of music used by silent film theater orchestras. Zamecnik was born and raised in Cleveland, studied with Antonín Dvorák in Prague, and returned to America as a professional musician and composer. He composed music in many genres including songs, dances, salon music, and pieces to be used in compiled silent film scores, composed a few significant complete film scores, and retired not long after the arrival of sound movies. Zamecnik was one of the few film-music composers who was working during the entire period from vaudeville through silent film to the coming of sound. Zamecnik's career encompassed the 15-year existence of photoplay music as a distinct genre (roughly 1913 to 1928), and his developing sophistication as an artist coincided with the development of film music, and of film itself.
