Culture Show Skiffle with The Dodge Brothers & Billy Bragg

The Culture Show 19th May 2007. Mark Kermode sings the praises of unfashionable skiffle. 50 years ago it was skiffle that brought a young Lennon and McCartney together. Swept off the map by rock and pop, could skiffle be on its way back? With a surprise contribution from Kermode's own rockabilly band, The Dodge Brothers & also Billy Bragg. © 2007 BBC.

HIAWATHA RAG - The Charlie McNair Skiffle Group

From a BELTONA '78' from the fifties. (BL2670) Not so much a skiffle group as a trad band! [I can't find any reference to Charlie McNair on t'internet. Does anyone know anything please?] The Olympian and the successor Olympian Hiawatha was a named passenger train operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (The Milwaukee Road) as train Nos. 15 and 16 from 1911 to 1961. Its route traversed the Milwaukee Road main line from Chicago, Illinois west to Seattle/Tacoma, Washington. The streamlined Olympian Hiawatha replaced the Milwaukee's heavyweight Olympian train in 1947. The train was designed by industrial designer Brooks Stevens and included the destinctive glassed-in "Skytop" observation-sleeping cars. In 1952 the Milwaukee Road added full-length "Super Dome" cars to the train.
On the Scene: Behind the Music of "One Man, Two Guvnors"

Get tickets to "One Man, Two Guvnors": www.broadway.com The Broadway-bound comedy hit "One Man, Two Guvnors" is full of slapstick, satire and sight gags, and it turns out it has a sensational score as well. The Craze, the show's onstage band, will be getting the audience moving with 15 original songs inspired by skiffle music, played on everything from guitar and bass to something called a horn-chestra. Before the London hit arrives at the Music Box Theatre on April 6, Broadway.com got a sneak preview of these toe-tapping tunes, plus a behind-the-music chat with composer Grant Olding (who is happy to explain what skiffle music is). Watch for an earful of some seriously fun Broadway music, then get crazy for The Craze on the Great White Way!

Band line up on this video is: Neil 'The Bear' Thomas, 'Lost' John Bates, 'Crystal' Clare, Jez '12 to the' Barr, Wayne Beauchamp, Martin Gilmour and Steve Gilmour. The Ugly Dog Skiffle Combo are an eccentric bunch of musicians from the UK who gather together on a regular basis to play anything that sounds good from the last 100 years on a mix of traditional and home made instruments. Their ever expanding set list covers many styles that exploit the diverse vocals that each member has to offer and the wide range of instruments they play including Tea Chest Bass, Guitar, Fiddle, Banjo, Kazoo, Double Bass, Washboard (of course), Harmonica, Mandolin and stand up drums. Everyone in the band has a say as to what is played and this has resulted in a set list taking in American Civil War and Folk Tunes, Gershwin and Cole Porter, Woodie Guthrie and Leadbelly, Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, T-Rex and Queen, Kirsty MaColl and Tracy Ullman, Four Non Blondes and Green Day along with all the classic Lonnie Donegan, Chas McDevitt and Vipers songs you'd expect from a skiffle band. The common thread to all these diverse styles is the enthusiasm and humour that the band the 'full steam ahead', chaotic, entertaining skiffle sound they generate.

ROCK ISLAND LINE - Lonnie Donegan and his Skiffle Group - 1954

Skiffle music is the British version of American jug bands, a type of folk music with elements of jazz, blues, and country music. Lonnie Donegan was the most famous and inspired a lot of the groups that followed. This is a spirited version of an American classic on the British LONDON record label. Enjoy!

Ken Colyer Skiffle Group - Streamline Train

Another '78' but this time it had been broken in two! After gluing together this side actually plays OK but with discernible 'clicks'. The flip-side was not so obliging and tended to repeat itself in places as we shall see. STREAMLINE TRAIN Streamline train, fastest train above. Hard worked train, aint gonna hurt you none. Kermode Uncut: Skiffle at the Albert Hall

www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode. A couple of weeks ago my band was asked to join a prestigious charity concert at the Albert Hall, this year's Concert for Care featuring music stars such as Paloma Faith and Johnny Greenwood of Radiohead, comedians Jimmy Carr and Ed Byrne, and organised by none other than Bond movie composer David Arnold. Well, when I say "join" I mean "warm up for", while people are arriving, but, you know, THE ALBERT HALL!

I had completed the sixty mile walk a couple of years earlier in 20 hours. The winner took just seven hours! I was saddened to hear that this annual event run by the moors rescue team has been discontinued. Perhaps the organisers, like me are becoming too old to bother? Anyone recognise themselves or others among the contestants? Remember - this was 24 years ago!

This Train - Ken Colyer's Skiffle Group - 1954

This example of the earliest Ken Colyer Skiffle group involves a distinct collaboration between Ken and, of course, Lonnie Donegan, both instrumentally and vocally. For skiffle Chris Barber played string bass which had been his second study instrument at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Bill Colyer resumed a position he had held with The Cranes when needed on washboard. This Train features Ken and Lonnie in a duo vocal
