In this research, we consider how the arms and hands can be used to enhance on-body interactions, which is typically finger input centric. To explore this opportunity, we developed Armura, a novel interactive on-body system, supporting both input and graphical output. Using this platform as a vehicle for exploration, we prototyped a series of applications and interactions. This helped to confirm chief use modalities, identify fruitful interaction approaches, and in general, better understand how interfaces operate on the body. Touchscreen phones and MP3 players could soon be a thing of the past after Microsoft developed a technology to turn your skin into a touch screen. The system, known as 'Skinput', works by sending out acoustic signals to sensors when a finger is tapped on the skin. Software, coupled with the sensors, can be taught which sound means which location. Different functions - start, stop, louder, softer, can be bound to different locations. Early trials suggest Skinput can be learned with about 20 minutes of training the sensors and can pick up a five-location system with accuracy in excess of 95 per cent. Microsoft says improvements still need to be carried out to increase accuracy before Skinput can become a commercial product.
