Space saving furniture that transforms 1 room into 2 or 3

Resource Furniture sells bookshelves, couches and desks- and a combination of the above- that are so highly engineered that they gracefully transform into beds. Gone is the amusing awkwardness of Murphy Beds, this more modern transforming furniture (much of it designed and made in Italy y Clei) is high style and almost, well, magical. Hydraulics make the transition from bookshelf or couch to bed a smooth and effortless thing to marvel. More info on original story: faircompanies.com

Small spaces furniture: storage bed and indoor bike rack

Urban living, especially in a place like Manhattan where home size is nearly half the national average, often means being more creative with your furniture selections. When Susan Kim moved from a Baltimore home to a NYC apartment she invested in a storage bed and an indoor bike rack.

House in a suitcase: tiny home + 2 trunks of furniture

Original story here: faircompanies.com In 1996, Barcelona architects Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores were hired to convert an old community laundry into a penthouse. At just 27 square meters (290 square feet), the space was minimal; it was also just a temporary home and the clients wanted a home that was maintenance-free. Prats and Flores (in collaboration with the Mallorcan architectural firm Duch-Pizà) delivered their solution in the form of two suitcases. Their "Casa en una Maleta" (House in a Suitcase) consists of two big trunks in the center of the room which can be opened throughout the day to satisfy daily living needs.

Lego-style apartment transforms into infinite spaces

When Christian Schallert isn't cooking, dressing, sleeping or eating, his 24 square meter (258 square feet) apartment looks like an empty cube. To use a piece of furniture, he has to build it. Located in Barcelona's hip Born district, the tiny apartment is a remodeled pigeon loft. Christian says its design was inspired by the space-saving furniture aboard boats, as well as the clean lines of a small Japanese home. Tiny Origami apartment in Manhattan unfolds into 4 rooms

In 2005, third-grade-teacher Eric Schneider bought as big as an apartment as he could afford in Manhattan. He paid $235000 for a 450-square-foot studio with a tiny kitchen. Then he let architects Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Normal Projects design a way to pack more density into his small space. In order to fit more apartment in a small footprint, they created an object that's bigger than furniture, but smaller than architecture and that morphs with the changing activities of a day. It's a large, blue, oversized cabinet that houses all of the walls/bed/tables/shelving/closets needed for at least 4 full-sized rooms. By continuing to unfold, or fold differently, Schneider can create a bedroom with accompanying built-in nightstand and closets, but an office plus library, a guest bedroom, and a living room. Or close it up entirely and simply flip down the small bar and the room becomes entertaining space for a dozen. The Normal Projects architects called their creation the Unfolding Apartment, though given Schneider's affinity for the Japanese sense of space (he spent his first year post-college living and teaching in Japan), it could as easily be called the Origami Apartment. In total, Schneider spent $70000 total remodeling his new apartment and this includes not just the cabinet, but the bathroom renovation, all cabinetry, kitchen appliances, furniture and dishes. In this video, Chen shows us his custom cabinet of rooms and Schneider unfolds a few of his favorite ...

Manhattan shoebox apartment: a 78-square-foot mini studio

A couple years ago, Manhattan architect Luke Clark Tyler, lived in a 96 square foot apartment. Instead of upsizing with his latest move, he chose to squeeze himself and his belongings into even less space. Luke now lives in a 78 square foot shoebox studio. It's too narrow to fit a bed lengthwise, but using a bit of plywood and 2x4s he built his own custom bed/couch. He keeps his clothes, plates, microwave, books, spices and shaving and cleaning supplies in a large built-in cabinet. The rest of his kitchen is a tiny refrigerator that helps hold up his desk (he works for home as a contract architect). While he admits he misses being able to cook a real meal- though he's vegetarian so eats a lot of vegetables and nuts and can even microwave eggs- Luke doesn't see living small as a sacrifice. He loves living in the heart of New York City- his place is in Midtown Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen- and he likes paying just $750/month (cheaper than the shared housing he could find in the area). Space-invading apartment: walk-thru shower & fridge-in-drawer

John MacPeek has fond memories of living out of a suitcase when he first moved to Europe over 2 decades ago. "There's a real advantage to having everything you own that you can carry on your back at one point". So when he was looking to buy an apartment in Barcelona, he was ready to live in something compact where everything he owned was accounted for. When he first saw his new home, its size didn't bother him (about 25 square meters or 270 square feet) as much as its condition. It was an old storage room for the building's water tanks and it looked more like a storage room than anything habitable. MacPeek enlisted the help of architect Lola Domenech who insisted she'd take on the project if she could open up the apartment to the sea. He bought the "over-sized closet" and Domenech began plans to take down the main wall and replace it with a 6 meter long (20 foot long) folding glass door that allows in light and air to provide passive solar heating and cooling (the shutters can close it off completely in summer to prevent overheating). She also implemented space-saving ideas like a walk-through shower, a bedroom that becomes a lounge and a refrigerator in a drawer. Maison garage: old parking as tiny home in Bordeaux, France

Jérémie Buchholtz wanted an affordable apartment in Bordeaux (he's a photographer who splits his time between Paris and Bordeaux so his budget was limited), but he wasn't finding anything he liked. Then he stumbled upon a listing for a garage. There was no house, it was just an abandoned garage for sale. And it looked like one. It had big metal doors that blocked out any sunlight and inside it was being used more as a junk room. So Buchholtz called his friend and architect Matthieu de Marien who specializes in converting stores, offices and other spaces into homes. De Marien took one look at the historic street and recognized it as something special. Passage Buhan is a private passageway where the owners each own half of the road so life extends into the street. And the history here is rich: a couple centuries ago, the laneway housed horses and their riders en route to the then city of Bordeaux and the old stable still sits on the street. Buchholtz bought the property and De Marien quickly cut into the old garage to create more light and ventilation. The roof is historic and couldn't be touched so he carved a 12 square meter (129 square foot) patio out of the small space, leaving only 41 square meters of living space (441 square feet). In order to make the space feel larger, De Marien created a "house within a house": one large piece of furniture that includes the bathroom, bedroom, office, closet, a sofa bed and all of the home's storage. With everything contained in ...

Shotgun shack redux: mortgage-free in 320 square feet

Two years ago, Debra and her family lived in a nearly 2000 square foot home on an acre and a half of land. Then her husband lost his job and they began to work 4 jobs between them to pay the mortgage, until one day they remembered they had a choice. Before having their son, Debra and her husband Gary had spent 9 years living in very tiny homes in South America. Living small hadn't felt like a sacrifice, but a way to stay focused on what is important. They decided they wanted to get back to that. They stopped working so hard, sold or gave away all of their extra stuff and began looking for the perfect tiny home. Debra had always liked the Mississippi shotgun style homes, and one day, while browsing craigslist, they noticed an ad for a local Arkansas company custom building tiny homes for a price that could mean an end to house payments. Six weeks and $15000 later they had their own fully paid-off dwelling. Today, Debra, her husband and 13-year-old son live in a 320-square foot home that is not a sacrifice, but exactly what they need. Architect & carpenter craft tiny (120-sq-ft) backyard studio

When architect Sarah Deeds wanted to set up a home office, there wasn't an extra room in the 500-square-foot one-bedroom home she shares with her carpenter partner John McBride, so she looked to the backyard for space. There- tucked into a back corner- she and McBride built the largest structure allowed by the city of Berkeley without a permit (though they did get an electrical permit). At 120 square feet their backyard hideaway was carefully designed to maximize space. Deeds shaped the building as an irregular pentagon to take full advantage of every corner. For the wider end McBride custom-built a wall-to-wall sofa (large enough for sleeping), using just a steel support bar (no legs) to give more space for the wooden storage drawers underneath. The narrower end houses a desk that curves like the office to allow space for Deeds, two clients and a desktop shaped to hold a full set of architecture plans (plus thin storage drawers custom-designed for plans). The space is condensed, but Deeds sees that as an advantage: it puts you closer to your views and nature. And since the footprint of the office is minimal, there's still plenty of vegetation in the 3100-square-foot backyard. More information at original story: faircompanies.com

Rear Window living: density + small homes = crossed glances

Charged with designing an apartment complex to house 111 low-income families in small spaces, architects Eva Prats and Ricardo Flores decided to blur the line between public and private space to gain square footage. Prats and Flores used Italian Renaissance palaces for inspiration (even traveling to Florence to take exact measurements of the facades of the Pitti and Strozzi palaces) and created a piazza as the main focus of the complex. The residents of Edificio 111 live in apartments of a very un-palatial size- as small as 55 square meters (590 square feet)-, but what they give up in personal space they gain in community, as well as a bit of reality theater (very much in the style of Hitchcock's Rear Window). Simple living in luxury outdoors classic: Airstream trailer tiny house

Sometime between childhood and adulthood, Andreas Stavropoulos had a Peter Pan adventure. He spent 4 years living in an Airstream trailer. He didn't have a mortage, he didn't pay rent and he was able to pay off student loans. But it wasn't just about gaining economic freedom. As a landscape architect, Stravropoulos wanted to reconnect with the land. He was also dreaming of living in an iconic vehicle and spent late nights on Craigslist before finding his 1959 Airstream Silver Bullet. Once Stravropoulos had purchased his piece of history, he installed it in a friend's sculpture studio and began its transformation. Out went the wall-to-wall linoleum and flesh tone paint. In went cork flooring, track lighting and a light paint to open up the space. Stravropoulos did all the work himself and the trailer reflects his love of workmanship. He exposed the riveted aluminum end caps. He created custom cabinets from a birch plywood. In this video, Stravropoulos shows us his iconic mobile home- parked (for now) behind his current home in Berkeley, California- and talks about the joy of living with just a capsule of things.
