A close-up look at one of my favorite revolvers, the .357 magnum 686 in 3" barrel. It's a very attractive gun, as well as a great little shooterl! You get a little education in this video about what "jumping the crimp" means. My case was old and had split; thus, loosening up the hold on the bullet. You might recall the news story last year about the guy who barely escaped death from a Grizzly attack in Alaska. He had a short barrel Ruger .454 with some very hot, heavy bullets. He got off a shot or two (maybe 3), but the recoil and a soft crimp on the bullet caused one of the heavy lead slugs to jump the crimp and hang up the cylinder, just as happens in this video. Fortunately, one of the few shots he had a chance to get off hit the bear in the head, I believe. Good thing, he was not going to be able to shoot again; that revolver was locked up. You might Google and find the story; I know Tom Gresham interviewed the guy about it.

How could a 7-shot 39.5 oz revolver be a favorite of Nutnfancy?! Two words: Shooting it! To shoot the Smith and Wesson 686 (or in this case the 686 Plus or P) is to love it. Yes it still is a limited capacity revolver that's heavy and a bit bulky. But in certain POUs, as discussed, the weight of this stainless steel 686P is ideal and appropriate. This 4 inch barreled 686P is steady on target with a perfect balance that inspires confidence. My selected POU on this full-sized .357 Magnum combat revolver is primarily (but not limited to!) range use and as a recreational target gun. For me it is a joy to shoot. One reason for this: the amazingly smooth and light double and single action trigger as factory-modified by the Smith and Wesson Performance Center. That makes it fast to shoot and the double action is my preferred firing methodology with this 686P. Add in the typical but still excellent high contrast SW sights, a smooth and wide trigger face, full lugged barrel (great balance), fast and sure ejection of empties (usually), grip cutouts for speed loader use, good Hogue rubber grips, intuitive cylinder release, and excellent accuracy and you can understand my enthusiasm. Also in the review I roll in a pristine 4 inch Colt Python .357 for some interesting comparisons as I cover some their details side by side (two gun reviews in one!). The little Smith and Wesson Airweight revolvers have a lot going for them. Generally speaking, a good trigger isn't one of them. Yes I'm particular in my triggers but a smoother, lighter pull on your Airweight can equate in better accuracy and more enjoyable shooting. Here we check in again with Terry G of Impact Guns to get a trigger job on the S&W 638 Bodyguard. I show lots of the details as Terry stones the parts and discusses the Smith lockwork on this gun (fascinating by itself). Be sure to thank Terry for this, as there are FEW gunsmiths that would open up their shops like this. (he is a big supporter and viewer of TNP himself). Viewers should use caution if they choose to do the jobs themselves; there are opportunities for failure in steps that Terry makes look easy. You assume all risk if you attempt your own job. Also a quality spring kit, like the Wison Combat one shown, should be used in quality trigger job. Smith and Wesson recommends against cutting the the stock springs (could result in unreliable ignition). The Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm is an advanced polymer pistol design that competes well with proven reliable designs like Glock and Sig. Upsides include a very low bore axis, Novak low profile sights, impressive magazine capacity (17 rds in 9mm!), excellent durability, simple takedown, threaded barrel options (like this Spec-Ops model), reinforced polymer frame, outstanding ergos (with interchangeable backstraps), black Melonite-finished SS slide and a quality build throughout. Smith and Wesson flat out knows how to make guns and the MP9 is no exception. The M&P pistol is offered in a variety of frame sizes, slide lengths, finishes, and calibers. It has just a few downsides and they are minor: 3 ounces heavier than the Glock 17 standard (28.2 vs 25.2 oz) and no checkering on the front trigger guard. It still is amassing its own track record and time will be the best judge as whether the SW MP9 will rise to the level of durability that the Glock design has established but all indications are positive. This is my personal review of the Smith & Wesson M&P9c semi auto. This is a subcompact version of the polymer frame service pistol and available in multiple calibers. This model sports Trijicon made Novak night sights and a 12 round capacity of 9mm.

When compared against comparably-priced, lightweight 1911s, the Scandium-framed Smith and Wesson 1911 PD series are excellent. The full sized #108293 and Commander-sized #108296 are looked at in depth in this Nutnfancy review. In most POUs their lighter weight will be welcomed. And yet they shoot "soft" and are manageable in rapid fire (shown). Accuracy is excellent with 3" inch groups achieved at 25 yds (flier phenomena noted). However in running, practical shooting drills the accuracy, especially of the full sized 1911PD seemed magical: hits came readily and the gun was fast. The shorter 108296 was more challenging to shoot with at the same extended distances(25 yds+) but that can be overcome with training. Quality is high on both guns for the price point. The Scandium frame is stronger than aluminum and resists fatigue cracking, the CNC-milled frame shows precision, the Black Melonite finish is handsome and durable, slide fit is about right (forgot to show that on vid), the grips are nice (for service pistol), the Novak sights are serviceable, the 5lb trigger is good, and the other component choices are adequate (discussed). The S&W 1911s depart from the pure John Browning formula by having external extractors, full length guide rods, and a firing pin safety system that indexes off the grip safety (similar to Kimber II series, preserving a better trigger pull). Declared as an outstanding pistol design in my November 2008 initial tabletop review, the S&W M&P9 now is proven as such in TNP. Much shooting in both range and tactical fashion has only endeared me more to the design. It is a good looking, low recoiling, well-built pistol with excellent ergos. At 28 or so ounces it is still light enough for most service pistol roles, depending on loadout. The sights are excellent low profile Novaks and enable the gun to be shot accurately with good speed. Lefties shoud rejoice because the M&P pistol series feature reversible magazine releases and the low profile slide stop is already on both sides. Field strip is easy and fast although I deem the take down/sear deactivation tool unnecessary. The S&W M&P Pro series gives improvements to the trigger (4.5 to 5 lbs stated) but I found nothing wrong with it as is. LCP VS the Bodyguard is a close competition; both are excellent little .380 options. In my opinion the LCP has the advantage of lighter weight, ergonomic grip and melting of the hard corners. The Bodyguard benefits from an excellent set of sights, and hardy design with a functional slide lock. I like both designs but shoot the BG380 much better, which is due to the sights and trigger break characteristics. The BG380 does have a manual safety which I'm not a fan of but am glad to see that is very low profile and snag free. I like both of these little guns, and feel they are hard to beat as a light weight true EDC option. Yes a .380 is not my preferred caliber for social work but youtube is filled with EDC videos which showcase excellent guns as "EDC" weapons and I have yet to meet any CCW holder that I know carrying a Glock 35, 22, or 23, or even the famed 1911 "daily" and that means every day. The Smith and Wesson 15-22 is fun. Flat out good times can be had with this super light, well-designed .22 AR-15 clone. At just 5.5 lbs it has amazing portability and comfort in use. With it's adjustable stock and this lightness, it might just be a favorite of your kids and any female shooters in the clan as well. POUs for the 15-22 will of course include this very recreational use, that of an AR-15 trainer, an AR-15 accessory TEST BED, a survival rifle, and just a project gun to accessorize. its .22 LR chambering will afford high round counts without killing your budget. Several models are offered and shown, including "compliant" versions with plain muzzles, fixed stocks, and 10 rd mags. My favorite by far is the perfectly equipped #811034 (or #811035) M&P MOE 15-22. Equipped with Magpul MOE stock and grip (in black but easily DuraCoated if necessary), folding MBUS sights, and flush mounted single pt sling tie in, it wears many of my preferred accessories. Although it's more expensive, it's worth it. All 15-22s have polymer receivers and quad rails which account for the svelte weight. The quad rail follows 1913 Picatinny standards and it thankfully narrow in profile. It allows plenty of room for vertical grip, light, and bipod attachment. Be advised that "frame flexing" was noted in accuracy testing off bipod due to the polymer receivers/rail composition and resulted in wider shot variations. It should be a minor issue in most POUs. The Sigma is Smith & Wesson's venture into using synthetic materials in gun construction, using high-strength polymer material for the frame. Created in 1994, it also incorporates a self-cocking or double-action only firing mechanism, so that the pistol can be fired without delay or preparation. The basic model is chambered for the .40 S&W cartridge, but it is also available in 9 x 19mm Parabellum and a sub-compact model in .380 ACP was also manufactured. A limited amount of these guns were also chambered for the .357 Sig cartridge. The Sigma series pistols are so similar to the competing Glock pistols that Glock sued Smith & Wesson for patent infringement. The case was settled out of court in 1997, with S&W agreeing to make alterations to the Sigma design and pay an undisclosed amount to Glock. In 1999 S&W improved the Sigma series with the main changes being shortening of the barrel and the slide by .5 inch (12.7 mm). Other improvements included a more ergonomic and comfortable grip and a slightly enlarged ejection port, due to the proprietary accessory rails located at the front (an inexpensive adapter can be attached to turn it into a standard picatinny mount).

Another Nunfancy 2010 SHOT Show adventure! An in-depth hit on all things Smith and Wesson including summaries of the M&P 15-22 .22s (the MOE version is an improvement), M&P15 rifles (the M&P 15PSX with Troy Industries TRX low profile handguard is impressive), the brand new "Bodyguard 380" (great design it seems) and "Bodyguard 38" line, the Performance Center revolvers, the Walther line, the S&W 1911s (I dig that 1911PD), several of the Classic revolvers, the .22s (I want the 317 Airlite but so much $$), and the excellent M&P pistol lineup (rapidly becoming another Nutnfancy favorite in my tactical shooting...smooth and fast!). This gun has been in my blood for a long time. Always wanted one from an earlier age and my love for the Airweight Smith and Wesson .38 Special revolvers, especially the Bodyguard has remained undiminished. But I still approach the review of this Model 638 critically and am candid about its limitations. Its ergonomics are hampered by its sizing for a compact and conceable POU: short sight radius, low contrast sights, small grip, no squared trigger guard (yes I still love those), and stiff out-of-the-box trigger. Also it, like all five-shooters is firepower limited and reloading under stress is very difficult. If reloading is planned, a viable system like the HKS 36 speedloader should be adopted and mastered (speed strip reloads other option). Energetic manipulation of the ejector rods should be practiced as well to aid in more positive empyting of the spent shell casings. Also the small J-frame sould be kept lightly lubricated (see S&W instructions) and kept clean in critical areas (hammer shroud, forcing cone, charging holes to aid exraction). In many ways, the small J-frame Smith is an experts gun or one it which contact distances are planned to be close. Training and practice improves the shooter's performance tremendously. As shown in the video, the 638 Bodyguard is very accurate when shot well. About 3" groups are achievable at 15 yards from standing position. The .38 Special +P chambering is adequate with modern loads. Expect recoil to be snappy with these +P loads <b>...</b>

Basic penetration/expansion test for the Federal HST, 180 gr in .40 S&W. Test gun was a Glock 22, shooting from 15 feet into wet newspaper jugs. Four layers of denim used in the test. This is a great load, but good luck in finding it.

The impressive Smith and Wesson TRR8 makes first runs in the "Trench Warfare Drill" with "PFIDude." A large Scandium, N-frame revolver, the TRR8 is ideally suited to this course. It has outstanding sights, a smooth and light double action trigger pull, excellent grips, carries an impressive eight rounds of .357 Magnum, and it loads fast with moon clips. With some competition revolver shooting under his belt (and apparently ON his belt too), PFI cranks out a speed run of 142 secs and only 6 misses in his first TW run with the TRR8 (but then again with 8 rds vs my 7 he had one less reload to do...maybe I shouldn't award that speed bonus...hmmm!). Speed remains high but accuracy drops a bit in subsequent runs due to fatigue. Great shootin' PFI. This is the revised Nutnfancy Trench Warfare course with side target ranging out to 35 yard, shooting small torso plates from Actiontarget.com. PFI experienced some no-fire loads that honestly I forgot to follow up on in the busy-ness of the runs that day (we did 12). PFIDude is using "North Mountain" moonclip holders which are outstanding (see www.firearmspro.com) and the CR Speed Race competition holster. As usual PFI pushes the boundaries on my limitation against competition gear in the Trench but I guess I'll give him a waiver again (insert wink here). Great runs by PFI, fun times!
