Mercedes Sosa - Sólo le pido a Dios

Written by León Gieco and recorded by Sosa and Gieco in l984, this is a song that reflects well "the voice of the voiceless ones" as she was referred to. Also known as "La Negra" (for her Diaguitan origin), Sosa performed Argentine music/folk songs, Brazilian and Cuban music as well as a tribute to Chilean poet Violeta Parra in 1971. That song, Gracias a la vida, was to become one of her signature songs. Here, Sosa addresses the horrors of terror and war as they affect the people, the innocents, the inheritants of injustice. Throughout her career, Sosa was a social activist receiving many acknowledgements for her contributions to the fight for justice and human rights. English translation of lyrics included.

Activist Monk Released, Vows To Continue Activism (Cambodia News in Khmer)

Loun Savath said Buddhist elders forced him to sign a pledge to stop assisting villagers forcibly evicted from their homes. He was detained Thursday (5/24) by police and religious elders for some 10 hours at Wat Botum, a prominent pagoda in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh. "The contract is serious and it affects not just me but also everyone," Venerable Loun Savath told reporters outside the temple Thursday night after being released. The activist, sometimes referred to as the multi-media monk, has been visible in recent months filming and taking photographs of residents and villagers staging protests against their forced evictions and alleged land grabs in Phnom Penh. He sometimes blesses protests with water in traditional rituals. "The action was ridiculous and beyond what I can describe," he said, referring to the detention and lectures he received from Buddhist superiors. Last year, the monk was banned by the country's supreme patriarch from staying at any pagoda because of his participation in social activism. The patriarch described Loun Savath's activities as contradictory to Buddhist principles. But Venerable Loun Savath said he follows Buddhist teachings by defending human rights. He vowed to continue his community work to assist the vulnerable. VOA Khmer's Say Mony reports from Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Can Jan Lokpal Bill End Corruption realistically? - Arvind Kejriwal at IIT Chennai - Good Speech

The Jan Lokpal Bill (Hindi: जन लोकपाल विधेयक) (also referred to as the citizens' ombudsman bill) is a proposed anti-corruption law in India. It is designed to effectively deter corruption, redress grievances and protect whistle-blowers. If passed and made into law, the bill seeks to create an ombudsman called the Lokpal (translation: protector of the people) -- an independent body similar to the Election Commission of India with the power to investigate politicians and bureaucrats without prior government permission. First introduced in 1969, the bill has failed to become law for nearly over four decades. In 2011, Gandhian rights activist Anna Hazare started a Satyagraha movement by commencing a fast unto death in New Delhi to demand the passing of the bill. The movement attracted attention in the media, and thousands of supporters. Following Hazare's four day hunger strike, the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stated that the bill would be re-introduced in the 2011 monsoon session of the Parliament. Attempts to draft a compromise bill, merging the Government's version and that of the civil group's version (Jan Lokpal), by a committee of five Cabinet Ministers and five social activists failed. The Indian government introduced its own version of the bill in the parliament, which the activists consider to be too weak. Here is the video which would clear most of your doubts on the Lokpal bill. In this video Mr. Arvind Kejriwal addresses the students at IIT ...
