The begining of the Polish Solidarity movement founded in September 1980 at the Gdansk shipyard and led by Lech Walesa. Solidarity was the first non-communist party-controlled trade union in a Warsaw Pact country. In the 1980s it constituted a broad anti-bureaucratic social movement. The government attempted to destroy the union during the period of martial law in the early 1980s and several years of political repression, but in the end it was forced to start negotiating with the union. www.solidarnosc.org.pl

"Solidarity Forever" was written by Ralph Chaplin in 1915. It is perhaps the second most famous union anthem after "The Internationale". Since the 1970s women have added verses to "Solidarity Forever" to reflect their concerns as union members. One popular set of stanzas is: We're the women of the union and we sure know how to fight. We'll fight for women's issues and we'll fight for women's rights. A woman's work is never done from morning until night. Women make the union strong! (Chorus) It is we who wash dishes, scrub the floors and clean the dirt, Feed the kids and send them off to school - and then we go to work, Where we work for half men's wages for a boss who likes to flirt. But the union makes us strong! (Chorus) A variation from Canada goes as follows: Were the women of the union in the forefront of the fight, We fight for womens issues, we fight for womens rights, Were prepared to fight for freedom, were prepared to stand our ground, Women make the union strong. (Chorus) Through our sisters and our brothers, we can make our union strong, For respect and equal value we have done without too long, We no longer have to tolerate injustices and wrongs, For the union makes us strong. (Chorus) When racism in all of us is finally out and gone, Then the union movement will be twice as powerful and strong, for equality for everyone will move the cause along, for the union makes us strong. (Chorus) The centennial edition of the Little Red Songbook includes these two new ...

The limited seven inch includes the live favourites 'Set Guitars to Kill' and 'A Little Solidarity Goes A Long Way'. Danceable, catchy and groove driven, they bring the ruckus like an instrumental Rage Against The Machine with the heart to match. ASIWYFA are a grinding, booming lurching riff piston with explosive power and mathematical precision. This four piece instrumental juggernaut from Belfast hit the scene in a big way in 2008, they sideswiped us straight out of leftfield flying the flag for the Northern Irish music scene and becoming new standard bearers for the Do It Yourself (and for Do It For Others) ethos. Their debut EP 'This Is Our Machine' was so magnificently realised and powerfully executed that they received widespread critical praise. ASIWYFA have won accolades such as Huw Stephens Album of the Week, 4Ks in Kerrang!, 10/10 from BBC Radio One, Band Of The Year from Across The Line, inclusion in the Top Ten Northern Irish Songs of our lifetime from AU Magazine, glowing reviews in the NME and inclusion in Top 50 Albums of '08 and Ones To Watch '09 in Rock Sound. February 17th saw an historic day in Libya for the fight against 41 years, the longest current dictatorship in the world, of Gaddaffi rule. People gathered in Dublin at the Spire in solidarity with the people of Libya who were being repressed with the greatest of brutality. There were many speakers in both Arabic and English. Michael Bermingham spoke in both languages with support and solidarity while 16 year old Rukiyah Hamed, daughter of Dublin South Independent election candidate Buhidma Hussein Hamed, articulated her concerns. Dr. Fatima Hamoush outlined the brutality of the Gaddaffi regime and outlined why so many have come out in support of the protests. More protests are being planned and another two took place on both saturday and Sunday at the Spire. © Paula Geraghty All Rights Reserved

Elders from Across the Nation Declare Solidarity with the Occupy Movement Veterans of America's 20th Century civil rights movement will enter the 21st Century Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles on Sunday, November 20. Known as the "Council of Elders," they will step inside the nationwide encampments to symbolically share the torch of hope and justice and engage the Occupiers in dialogue about defining movements of the past. "We want to contribute to this intergenerational movement," says Dr. Vincent Harding, activist and writer in the civil rights movement. "We are thankful for the efforts of Occupy Wall Street to unite the 99% and bring the many gifts and great energy of millions into effective action to transform our nation." The Council of Elders is an independent group of leaders from the farm workers, sanctuary and human rights movements that shook the nation's conscience with public protests over the past 50 years. "We see Occupy Wall Street as a continuation, a deepening and expansion of the determination of the diverse peoples of our nation to transform our country into a more democratic, equitable, just, and compassionate society," excerpt from the statement of solidarity by the Council of Elders to be read at each of the Occupy encampments. By bringing their voices to the Occupy Wall Street movement, the elders are addressing a litany of social grievances, including poverty, mass incarceration, and what they call a ...

TRANSLATION: (The sign in the background shows faces of some of the recent young victims of the Mubarak government. The writing says they are among the martyrs of the 25 January Revolution.) KAMAL ABBAS: I am speaking to you from a place very close to Tahrir Square in Cairo, "Liberation Square", which was the heart of the Revolution in Egypt. This is the place were many of our youth paid with their lives and blood in the struggle for our just rights. From this place, I want you to know that we stand with you as you stood with us. I want you to know that no power can challenge the will of the people when they believe in their rights. When they raise their voices loud and clear and struggle against exploitation.
