African Soukous Guitar - Amour Fou (Crazy Love) - Kanda Bongo Man, Diblo Dibala, Pf. by Don Keller

Me playing one of my favorite soukous songs from Kanda Bongo Man, Diblo Dibala and Rigo "Ringo" Star. Song is Amour Fou from the album Amour Fou (1988). I love 80's soukous. Bands used real trap drums back then. What a concept!! I put my own soukous lines from 6:00min on. [Performed on 1-4-10.]

Press 'pause' to let more video build up before pressing 'play.' On this recording, Jonal sings (he sang with OK Jazz shortly before and after the death of Franco). Shiko Mawatu on guitar. Shiko told me the other night that his first professional guitar playing job was touring with...DOCTOR NICO! Wow!! This video: In Kenya this song is known as "Sina Makosa." According to sources at Africambiance.org this tune was originally recorded by a Kenyan/Tanzanian group called Les Wanyika -- it can be purchased on a CD called 'Kenya Dance Mania', which has some other great East African music on it. Lokassa ya Mbongo does a nice job playing Professor Omari's original rhythm riffs from that recording, while lead guitarist Shiko Mawatu follows the lead of Les Wanyika guitarist Ngereza's original. You can follow discussions like this among the savants at africambiance.org. I'm grateful to "antony" and "adoyo" there for their insights on SINA MAKOSA.

Testament ya Bowule - Malage de Lugendo w/Soukous Stars

VINTAGE SOUKOUS! Malage de Lugendo's most famous song, performed in Newark with Soukous Stars, February 4th, 2006. Malage has an amazing vocal range -- it's demonstrated at the tail end of the song when he is singing in a high register, and then reverts to his usual voice to say "thank you" to the crowd...what a voice... (sorry about the jump in the middle -- videotape cassette change caused me to miss about 10-seconds of Shiko's solo guitar...shucks...)

SOUKOUS SUPERSTAR - MIXED BY DJ RASGAD VINCENT (various artists)

Soukous (also known as Lingala and Congo) is a dance music (1) genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa. "Soukous" (a derivative of the French word secousse, "shake" (2) was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term "soukous" has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments. Soukous is called Congo music in West Africa, and Lingala in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania - referring to the Lingala language of the region from where it originated. In Zambia and Zimbabwe, where Congolese music is also influential, it is usually referred to as Rumba. In the 1980s and early 1990s, a fast-paced style of soukous known as kwassa kwassa -- named after a popular dance, was popular. A style called ndombolo, also named after a dance, is currently popular. Soukous also mixes styles from zouk music.

Dr Nico Kasanda - Soukous Guitar Transcription - Table Ronde (Kabasele)

Transcription of Dr. Nico's iconic guitar from "Table Ronde" (now I hope it is actually him). Here the original on youtube www.youtube.com I love every single detail and accent of these lines and you will catch them only by listening to the original. I could not properly memorize the arpeggios in the third part but the score is correct and you get the idea anyway. To me this is pure gold from 1960, hope you enjoy playing it. Suggestions and constructive feedback are welcome. Website: www.guitaresoukous.com

Soukous Stars dancers: The Crowd Goes Wild!

The highpoint of the Soukous Stars show Friday night in Newark was the dancer-by-dancer introductions that Machine Katalayi does. This 14-minute video will have you riveted to the screen. You can watch this clip 10 times and see something new and different in it every time. The crowd went wild over the dancers. Was it Mambo's coquettish appeal? Was it Maria's HEAD STAND WHILE DANCING? (really!!) -- well whatever it was the crowd loved it SO MUCH the authorities (Euloge and Nono, both honorably protective of the girls) had to step in and fight back the revelers!! Don't miss this 14-minute video -- the last 14-minutes of the show.
