I decided to toss together a quick demo of what a high quality soundfont sounds like using the onestop.mid file included in Windows and a soundfont I had lying around. Yes, I know it's a cheesy as hell track, but I chose it because it showcases a large amount of different midi instruments so you get a feel for the range of different sounds that can be gotten from midi in a decent quality. I did this so as to show people that midi has undeservedly (and unfortunately) gotten a reputation for sounding like crap. The main reason for this is that most soundcards either don't support or don't use decent quality soundfonts or softsynths to render midi sound. This is done because good quality soundfonts can range in size from 20-some megabytes to several gigabytes and the memory usage is directly proportional to the size of the font being used. To trim down both the install size of soundcard drivers as well as reduce the memory usage of soundcards so as to accomodate lower end pcs, 99% of the time the soundfonts included by default with soundcards are made of ass, sound like ass and the user therefore ends up associating midi with ass :( Anyway, this was just a quick throw-together of a 200-some megabyte soundfont collection (SGM-V2.01 for those interested) and the onestop.mid file played in Winamp. NO sound effects were added and the finished recording was not altered in any way other than encoding to aac (curse you, adobe premiere!). As you can hear, the track already sounds <b>...</b>

This was an absolute bitch to make. Basically, the title says it all. Finally, a soundfont for Mario Paint Composer and the Advanced Mario Sequencer that sounds like KK Slider! Plus, there are a few extra sounds thrown in for good measure. ;) (the extra sounds are from balloon303's hard rock soundfont and Gallahaut's steinway piano soundfont) EDIT: Version 1.5 has some minor changes and one major change. All of the KK Slider instruments are now louder and the Game Boy (Vox) has been replaced with the Plucked Bass sound from balloon's hard rock soundfont. EDIT 2: Version 1.7 is the final update. All it is, is that the Heart is lowered by one octive allowing for a broader range in guitar. the demo song is from the GCN Animal Crossing file select screen with Slider's lyrics improvised to the best of my ability. Welcome to my first soundset video!! A modification of this soundfont: www.pianosounds.com (by Warren Trachtman) in order to be played in MPC! (This link is not MPC compatible, the modified soundfont is farther down). This is a Piano Steinway Soundset which uses authentic samples of a REAL Steinway Piano! (7 feet and 4 inches to be technical). In order to get Mario Paint Composer to fit the entire range of the piano, I divided it into four sections (High, MedHigh, MedLow, Low). Because there are 19 Instruments and only four different sections of piano, there are a lot of doubled instruments. Although this doesn't seem very useful at first, I think you will find that the doubled instruments is an excellent way of simulating pedal (you'll see in my samples pieces). You may also double two instruments on the same pitch class to increase volume (this can help bring out a melody line say for a fugue or something).
