Vinnie Cilurzo is the talented brewer at Russian River. One of the things that makes their beer so unique is his deft touch with sour beer. Sour beer is made with a funky yeast called brettanomyces, and often a begrudgingly acquired taste. But Vinnie's are other worldly. Indeed he makes the best sour we've ever tasted.
As I continue my short Sour Ale series I try the latest New Belgium offering in their Lips of Faith series. This beer is call "Clutch" and is a collaboration between new Belgium and the Maryland band Clutch. It is billed as a Dark Sour Ale so let's see how it tastes.

americanbeertv.net - Is your palate ready for an advanced lesson in sour? If so here's your chance. Russian River Supplication is definitely a sour beer, and an advanced one at that. Supplication is a 7% abv barrel aged sour using three (not four like we mentioned in the video. The label lists all four though) seperate strains of wild yeast, aged for a year or more in pinot noir barrels. As if that isn't enough flavor for you they add tart cherries to the mix. This is not a fruit beer, and the taste of cherries exists to bring out the fruit qualities of the wine barrel. Don't go looking for something along the lines of a kriek lambic with this one. I don't want to frighten people off, all our talk about sourness is a good thing. A great thing even. This beer is surprisingly drinkable. There is something about a good sour beer that makes that sour flavor almost addictive. You just keep wanting to drink more and more of it. If you see this one, give it a shot. I think this is either a love it or hate it beer, but it will let you know where you stand on sours.

towards the end of the video i said "thats the american ale yeast", but i meant to say "thats the american sour ale". i forgot where i put my irish moss so i didn't use any. a month in bottles should give it enough time to clear though. i didn't do a hydrometer reading either because the water to wart ratio was a little different in the two fermenters!!!

We were heading to bootleggers to taste some beer and we found a bottle share had broken out! Since we had just come from total wine, we grabbed a couple bottles and joined in. So, another sour ale...oh those Flemish ales... We like them. This one was alright, not fantastic, but it was still a tasty beverage. Here's the information about it... A blend of 75% young beer fermented in steel tanks and 25% old beer aged 2 year in large oak casks. Rodenbach bears the proud title of "the most refreshing beer in the world".

I reviewed this one a LONG time ago, first uploading a review on August 17, 2005, and I've only had it a few times since then. My overall opinion of the beer hasn't changed very much in the intervening years, but I definitely have more experience with wild yeasts and sour beers, and get different things from it than I did five years ago. Zymurgical Explorations rating: 8.0/10 My original BA review from August 2005: "Purchased from Woody's Smokes and Brews, Franklin, TN. I had a taste of this at the Bring-a-Friend Beer Tasting in Birmingham a few weeks back, but not enough for a full review. Bought a single bottle and poured it into my oversized wine glass. Appearance is really quite nice, with a sort of orange-yellow body covered with one of the thickest off-white foamy heads I've ever seen. I didn't even pour that aggressively, and this thing just took off. Almost too much head since I'm having to dribble the remainder of the brew into the glass a little bit at a time. Aroma is very sweet, with hints of soft honey and possibly even a hint of cinnamon. Fascinating the way these Belgian Ales seem to produce the strangest scents that have nothing to do with barley, malt, and hops, but when it smells this nice I'm not complaining. I may have let this warm a bit too long, for the beer has a strongly astringent flavor first and foremost, which only later softens into a nice soft sweetness that <b>...</b>

In episode 136 of the Hop Cast, Ken Hunnemeder and Brad Chmielewski are joined by Greer Davis to sample a couple interesting sour ales. The first one they open is the Lost Abbey Red Poppy Ale, a 5.5 % ABV Flanders Oud Bruin. The Red Poppy is brewed from a brown ale base and then aged in oak barrels for over 6 months with sour cherries. An excellent beer but the price is kind of expensive on this guy so go in with a couple of friends if you want to give it a try. They next move onto the Vuja De from Cigar City Brewing. The Vuja De is a 9.96 % ABV American Wild Ale. Surprising to see such a high ABV sour beer since many of them are around 5 %. The Vuju De is an ale with black currants, locally foraged lemon leaves, hibiscus, cane sugar and elderberries. A very interesting beer from Cigar City.
