WORLD TRAVEL.- SOUTHEAST ASIA

Southeast Asia (or Southeastern Asia) is a subregion of Asia, consisting of the countries that are geographically south of China, east of India and north of Australia. The region lies on the intersection of geological plates, with heavy seismic and volcanic activity. Southeast Asia consists of two geographic regions: the Asian mainland and island arcs and archipelagoes to the east and southeast. The mainland section consists of Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia while the maritime section consists of Brunei, East Malaysia, East Timor, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore.[1] Papua New Guinea is an observer in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as is East Timor. Geographically speaking southern China, Taiwan,[2] Hong Kong[3][4] and Macau[5] are sometimes grouped in the Southeast Asia subregion, although politically they are rarely grouped as such. The same is true for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India.[6][7] Austronesian peoples predominate in this region. The major religions are Islam and Buddhism, followed by Christianity. However, a wide variety of religions are found throughout the region, including many Hindu and animist-influenced practices

South East Asia

South East Asia is a fascinating, atmospheric and exotic world full of unspoiled nature and cultural treasures. A region in which both past and present live side by side and unite in a wonderful way. Myanmar, The Land of Golden Pagodas: for decades the rulers of what was once known as Burma closed the country's doors to the outside world and many of its fine religious sanctuaries were badly neglected but they have now gradually been given the respect that they deserve. Inlay Lake is home to the Inthas, one of the many tribes that came to Myanmar from various of South East Asia's neighboring countries. Throughout the area are the floating plantations of the Inthas on which tomatoes, cucumbers and beans are cultivated. A journey on the Shan State Express provides passengers with a fascinating insight into the life of the Shan people whose lives are dominated by agriculture. The northwest of Myanmar is known for its many splendid sacred buildings such as Mingun's Hsinbyume Pagoda, that was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century. It was constructed according to the architectural rules of Hindu Buddhist cosmology and symbolizes the World Mountain of Meru. One of Taiwan's most important centers of arts and crafts is located in the west of the island, Lukang, an ancient and idyllic town full of age-old traditions whose large number of beautiful temples is most impressive. In Cambodia and around 40 kilometres north of Phnom Penh, is the former capital city of Udong ...

Tsunami Hits Thailand & South East Asia!

Dedicated to all 2004 December 26th Boxing Day Tsunami Victims, families, those injured, and those otherwise affected. The terrible devastation and the aftermath of this catastrophe caught on tape. The 2004 Boxing Day tsunami was triggered by an earthquake off the north-west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It killed 230000 people in a dozen Indian Ocean countries, 170000 of them in Indonesia's Aceh province alone. Sri Lanka and Thailand were severely impacted by the tsunami on December 26, 2004. Tsunami Thailand 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was an undersea earthquake that occurred at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) December 26, 2004, with an epicentre off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Surprisingly, some islands right in the middle of the tsunami were not badly affected. It turns out their atolls, or coral reefs, absorbed much of the wave. The coral ridges protected them. In many regions of the Asian waters, there is a practice some fishermen use, of dynamiting the natural coral reefs to bring up fish. These barriers to the tsunami were no longer in place to deflect the water. The disaster promoted a global outpouring of sympathy, with governments, individuals and corporations pledging more than $13 billion in aid. According to UN database, nearly two years after donors pledged billions to help the victims only half the money had been spent. Of the half a million people left homeless by the disaster, only a third have been permanently rehoused. The ...

Jakarta Holds Southeast Asian English Olympics

I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http The Southeast Asian English Olympics were held in February in Jakarta, Indonesia. High school and university students competed to demonstrate their English skills at the Anggrek campus of Binus University. The Bina Nusantara English Club at the university started the English Olympics in two thousand five. The yearly competition was formerly known as the Nationwide English Olympics. This year the club invited other Southeast Asian schools to send "ambassadors" to join students from Indonesia. The organizers hoped to have four hundred or more students take part. There were six areas of competition. One was based on Scrabble. This is the board game where players try to form words from letters with different point values. Other areas of the competition included speech, storytelling and newscasting. Students were judged on their ability to present the news. Yohanes Napis is the twenty-year-old chief executive officer of the Olympics. He says the biggest event was the debate competition, which included international judges. He says the competition used the British parliamentary system but debaters could use either British or American English. Organizers of the Southeast Asian English Olympics got support from the American Embassy in Jakarta and VOA. The finals took place February nineteenth in a new high-tech American cultural center called @america. It opened in December in the ...

Online Journalism in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing online markets worldwide! Internet access and speed differ widely, ranging from Singapore with its broadband connectivity to countries like Cambodia and Laos with low penetration rates, or to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines with huge differences in online connectivity between major cities and rural areas. Yet, the speed of development is startling all over the region. Mobile Internet access is picking up fast. Internet cafés are losing ground to Mobile as dominant access point. User generated content, micro-blogging and social communities are driving trends. Online search and the amount of uploaded/downloaded video files grow significantly. The spread of Internet and Smartphones is changing the way Southeast Asians are consuming information. Traditional media have to get mobile, socially connected and interactive. With case studies from Singapore, Cambodia and Malaysia, Klaus Bardenhagen and Madeleine Fulst analyzed the latest trends and challenges. The documentary has been published in 2010 by the Regional Media Programme Asia of the German Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung.

8th Annual Lowell Southeast Asian Water Festival 2004

For many centuries in Southeast Asian, the Water Festival is an annual event celebrating the connection of water in all aspects of life - food, agriculture, spirituality and economic prosperity. Water has always represented prosperity, life and goodness to the Southeast Asian people. Buddhist scripture explains that the Water Festival is held to thank the spirit of the water, to pray for evil spirits to go away, and to honor the Dragon King who dwells in the water. The Water Festival is a time to be thankful for the rivers, lakes and ponds that villagers depend upon for their livelihood and economic development. In the capitals of Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam, during the boat races, known as Bon Om Tuk in Khmer; Boun Song Hae in Laotian, Keng Loeur in Thai and Le^~ ho^ i ddua thuye^`n in Vietnamese, people of all ages gather at the riverbanks to sing, dance, and watch the boat races for three days each November. Families journey from remote areas of the country by cars, motorcycles, bicycles, ox, boats, and in some cases by foot to take part in the festival. Millions come as spectators, cheering from the shore. The brave come to compete in the boat races - determined to win a trophy for their village. Rowing teams with their colorful hand crafted wooden boats - some as long as 70 feet and holding up to 30 rowers come to compete with enthusiasm, pride and the dream of winning. Long before the race, each team devote many months to perfecting rowing in unison that is ...
