Exploring derelict space ship in rare Soviet-style SF film

Here's an amazing scene from an ultra-rare, kitschy, trippy, Soviet-style SF film, Ikarie XB 1 (aka Ikaria XB1, Icarus XB1 and Voyage to the End of the Universe). Czechoslovakia's first science fiction film, this remarkable 1963 movie tells the story of Starship Ikaria XB 1's 2163 trek to Alpha Centari. ("Voyage" was the savagely cut, English dubbed version released by American International Pictures.) The film is generally apolitical, except for this remarkable scene, in which the explorers enter a derelict 20th Century space craft, littered with evidence of capitalist immorality. The visuals are striking. Corpses of tuxedo-clad, gambling westerners, their bodies preserved by open vacuum. The crew killed by their own chemical hand-weapons as they fought over dwindling oxygen. The ship laden with nuclear weapons -- still active after centuries. Ikarie XB 1 is an ambitious, thoughtful, intelligent film that was decades ahead of its time. It's an ultra-rare "must-see" for any serious SF fan, with high-concept elements galore: a trip to proxima centaura; time dilation; future foods, fashion, music and dance; first-contact protocols; increased longevity; artificial intelligence; bulky socialist robots. It's said the screenplay was inspired by the work of Stanislaw Lem, including "The Magellanic Cloud" from 1955. Soviet Reanimation Experiments

The provenance of this disturbing film from the late 40's is, at best, cloudy. While the narrator appears to be British the footage itself is clearly from the Soviet Union, as indicated by the Cryllic characters visible on the medical equipment, clocks, and doorways. The film itself documents several animal reanimation experiments, euphamistically referred to as "revival", beginning with individual organs and moving on to body parts and, eventually, a dead dog. Several sequences, in particular the undead head of a dog devoid of a body, are made even more chilling by the dry, matter-of-fact narration. The film seems to confirm speculation that Soviet forces seized several of the scientists involved in the Nazi reanimation efforts during the chaos of the post-war years.

USSR/ Soviet National Anthem - Red Army Choir

This Anthem of Soviet Union was recorded in 1944. The National Anthem of the Soviet Union (or Hymn, Russian: Гимн Советского Союза, Gimn Sovetskogo Soyuza) replaced the Internationale as the national anthem on March 15, 1944. The lyrics were written by Sergey Mikhalkov (born 1913) in collaboration with G. El-Registan (1899-1945) and the music was composed by Alexander Alexandrov (1883-1946). It was believed that Soviet soldiers would respond more to an anthem that was dedicated only to the Soviet Union rather than to a worldwide movement. The song was originally written as the Anthem of the Bolshevik Party with lyrics in the Alexandrine meter by Vasily Lebedev-Kumach in 1939. Stalin was originally mentioned in the lyrics; however, after his death in 1953 and the process of Destalinization, the lyrics referring to Stalin were unacceptable. From that time until 1977, the anthem was played without lyrics. In 1977, Mikhalkov amended the lyrics to omit Stalin's name, and other changes were made (see below). The official name of the 1977 version was "The State Anthem of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (Russian: Госуда́рственный гимн Сою́за Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик; Gosudarstvenny Gimn Soyuza Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik). English lyrics of 1944 version Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics Great Russia has wielded forever to stand! Created in struggle by will of the Peoples, United and Mighty our Soviet Land! A Russian-built rocket has launched successfully from the European spaceport in French Guiana - taking with it a payload of mostly spy satellites for France. One of the civilian uses, though, is that one of the satellites will provide us with high-resolution 3D colour images of the Earth. Also on board is a Chilean eye-in-the-sky, which will be used for mapping farmlands. It's only the second time a Russian rocket has blasted off from outside former Soviet countries - following a similar successful mission last month in French Guiana. The Rise of the Soviet Navy - Part 1

Made by the US Navy at the height of the Cold War, this informative film chronicles the history of the Soviet Navy from the Czarist era through WWI, the Revolution, WWII, and the Cold War. The film begins with shots of the helicopter aircraft carrier Moscow / Moskva on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean Sea in 1968. The Kashin class guided-missile destroyers, the world's first major ships built with gas turbine propulsion, are also shown along with Soviet nuclear submarines. These sophisticated warships are seen to epitomize the Soviet naval threat to the West. The story of the Soviet Navy is a complicated one, and the film presents it using fascinating archival footage, some of it clearly pulled from the movies of Sergei Eisenstein. The Russian Imperial Navy that existed under Czar Nicholas II is shown, consisting of dreadnoughts, battleships and submarines. The royal yacht is seen briefly, with Princess Anastasia. Almost this entire fleet would be destroyed by the end of the Revolution, and Anasatasia and Nicholas II's family would be murdered. Aleksandr Kolchak, who led the White Russian navy during the period of the Civil War, is shown prior to his defeat and execution. Under Lenin, the navy would be only partially rebuilt, as suspicions existed as to the loyalty of the officer corps. This, despite the fact that the crew of the cruiser Aurora were among the first to join the call to arms. Under Stalin, the Soviet Navy would rebound, and a new canal was built <b>...</b>

Conflict: Soviet-Afghan War 1/4

Wars In Peace: Afghanistan The Soviet War in Afghanistan, also known as the SovietAfghan War, was a nine-year conflict involving the Soviet Union, supporting the Marxist government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan at their own request, against the Islamist Mujahideen Resistance. The mujahideen found other support from a variety of sources including the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and other Muslim nations through the context of the Cold War. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 24, 1979 under Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989 under the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Due to the interminable nature of the war, the conflict in Afghanistan has often been referred to as the Soviets' Vietnam; the analogy compares the conflict to America's role in the Vietnam War. Soviet Sea Power Today - Part 1

Made by the US Navy at the height of the Cold War, this film observes current Soviet naval forces and attempts to assess their global reach and strategy. By this time, the Soviets had achieved the world's largest submarine force, and supplemented it with state-of-the-art anti-submarine weapons including the helicopter aircraft carrier Moskva, which is shown in the film. Also shown are various other vessels, including Russian PT boats, Kashin class guided-missile destroyers, and Soviet nuclear submarines capable of firing nuclear ballistic missiles. A brief history of the Soviet navy is presented under Lenin, Stalin and Kruschev, and its aims assessed. The film notes that the current Soviet navy must be assessed not only in terms of warships, but for its omnipresence throughout the world in the form of the fishing fleet (used to gather intelligence) and merchant marine. Shown in the film are Soviet cruise ships, oceanographic research vessels and submarines, nuclear submarines, and ice breakers. Also shown is footage of Stalin, Lenin, Red Square, the 50th Anniversary of the Russian Revolution parade in Moscow, and more.

What is the essence of this new power, which people in most countries still will not, or cannot, understand? The nature of this power, which is attracting larger and larger numbers of workers in every country, is the following: in the past the country was, in one way or another, governed by the rich, or by the capitalists, but now, for the first time, the country is being governed by the classes, and moreover, by the masses of those classes, which capitalism formerly oppressed. Even in the most democratic and freest republics, as long as capital rules and the land remains private property, the government will always be in the hands of a small minority, nine-tenths of which consist of capitalists, or rich men. In this country, in Russia, for the first time in the world history, the government of the country is so organised that only the workers and the working peasants, to the exclusion of the exploiters, constitute those mass organisations known as Soviets, and these Soviets wield all state power. Soviets Shoot Down Korean Airliner September 1, 1983

Soviet fighters shot down a Korean commercial airliner, killing 269, when it strayed over sensitive Soviet territory. For unexplained reasons, KAL Flight 007, en route from New York to Seoul, had deviated from its scheduled route and drifted 300 miles into Soviet airspace. The USSR admitted shooting down the plane but denied knowing it was a civilian airliner. Soviet officials alleged the airliner was on a spy mission and had not responded to warnings. US leaders condemned the act.

Charles Wilson on the Soviet-Afghanistan War - Part 1 (1988)

February 9, 1988 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Charles Nesbitt Wilson (June 1, 1933 -- February 10, 2010) was a United States naval officer and former 12-term Democratic United States Representative from the 2nd congressional district in Texas. He was best known for leading Congress into supporting Operation Cyclone, the largest-ever Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) covert operation, which under the Reagan administration supplied military equipment, including anti-aircraft weapons such as Stinger antiaircraft missiles, and paramilitary officers from their Special Activities Division to the Afghan Mujahideen and the Taliban during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. His behind-the-scenes campaign was the subject of the non-fiction book Charlie Wilson's War by George Crile and a subsequent film adaptation starring Tom Hanks as Wilson. In 1980, Wilson read an Associated Press dispatch on the congressional wires describing the refugees fleeing Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. The communist Democratic Republic of Afghanistan had taken over power during the Afghan Civil War and asked the Soviet Union to help suppress resistance from the mujahideen. According to biographer George Crile III, Wilson called the staff of the House Appropriations Committee dealing with "black appropriations" and requested a two-fold appropriation increase for Afghanistan. WW2 - Goldap is retaken from Soviets (Nov 1944)

WW2 footage. German Wartime Newsreel (Die Deutsche Wochenschau Nr. 741, 16-Nov-1944) The Gumbinnen Operation, also known as the Goldap Operation (or Goldap-Gumbinnen Operation), was a Soviet offensive on the Eastern Front late in 1944, in which forces of the 3rd Belorussian Front attempted to penetrate the borders of East Prussia. The offensive failed, due to strong resistance by the Wehrmacht. As a result it is largely known through German accounts of the defence and because of the atrocities that were alleged to have been committed by troops of the 11th Guards Army, the so-called Nemmersdorf massacre. On 16 October, the 5th and 11th Guards Armies went onto the offensive and initially penetrated some 11 km into the German defensive belt. The flanking armies commenced operations the next day, by which time units of the 11th Guards Army had crossed the East Prussian border. The Soviet troops ran into extremely strong resistance, however. It took them four days to penetrate the initial tactical defences, while the second defence line was so strong that Chernyakhovsky was compelled to commit the 2nd Guards Tank Corps to break it. Casualties were extremely heavy. On 20 October, the second line was ruptured by the 11th Guards Army and 2nd Guards Tank Corps east of Gumbinnen, defended by the guns of the 18th Anti-Aircraft Division and the Fallschirm-Panzerkorps Hermann Göring, which had been redeployed in the area to counter the Soviet advance. On 21 October, the Soviets <b>...</b>

GI Joe Action Figure Movie - Soviet Strike

Soviet Strike is a movie I made over a decade ago when I was 13 years old. Apparently the plot, what little there is (hey, its a GI Joe movie, 'nuff said) has our heroes trying to take out a Russian General. Why, I do not know. So I guess this video reflected many of the action movies of my youth, where any excuse is good for an action flick. I thought the tape had been lost over the years until it turned up recently. I have since then edited and added special effects to it, bringing the video to life the way I imagined it in my head as a kid. Its amazing to see how I have stuck with film since my youth and how my concept of it has evolved over the intervening years. Finding it again and applying my adult skill-sets to it was a real treat. I hope it is as fun to watch as it was to shoot as a kid and edit as an adult. Enjoy.

Code Name "Azorian" The Raising of the Soviet Sub K-129

CIA released information Friday, under the freedom of information act, confirming what the world has known for years. Operation "Azorian" one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by the CIA and US Navy during the cold war. The raising of the soviet nuclear submarine K-129. Dateline, March 1968, the Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129 carrying three top secret submarine-launched missiles, each with a one megaton thermo-nuclear warhead, sank with the tragic loss of its 98 officers and crew in the Central North Pacific. K-129's location remained unknown to the Soviets for over six years but the US Air Force had located it within weeks. The intelligence of Soviet naval missile technology and a potential intelligence coup of the highest magnitude! The CIA and the US Navy immediately crafted a secret program of unparalleled imagination and engineering to recover the K-129. This clandestine effort was code named "Azorian", to obtain intelligence at the height of the Cold War, would take over six years to complete and still remains highly classified even today. Now, after more than three decades of secrecy, this incredible story can finally be told, by the men who were there that made it happen, together with original film footage of Azorian´s actual salvage attempt and new documentary evidence relating to the projects success in the raising of the K-129. Don Cherry Interview 1987 Soviet Union Canada Hockey Fight

Blame the Russians! That's Don Cherry's reaction to the bench-clearing brawl between the Canadian and Soviet world junior hockey teams in Piestany, Czechoslovakia in 1987. Canada was going for gold, leading 4-2. Then a fight broke out, both benches emptied, and a 20-minute fracas erupted. Former NHL coach Don Cherry, always lenient on hockey violence, applauds the Canadian players. In this clip, he tells sportswriter Michael Farber that sacrificing a medal to fight the Soviets was simply "our Canadian way."

Canadiens vs. the Soviet Red Army - Dec. 31, 1975

Broadcast Date: Dec. 31, 1975 Three years after the Summit Series captivated hockey fans across Canada, the Soviet Union's best players return for a New Year's Eve matchup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1975. Almost 19000 fans are on hand at the Forum to witness a match representative of the ongoing Cold War, pitting the freedom and democracy of the West against the communist repression of the USSR In these segments from the game, the teams' disparate styles of play are on show: the Soviets' puck control and long forward passes, and the Habs' suffocating defense and creative on-the-fly attack. • The match was officially billed as an exhibition contest, but for the members of the Canadiens, the game was a showdown between the best hockey teams in the world. Just as the Habs dominated the NHL most seasons, the Soviet Red Army team (known domestically as CSKA Moscow) was perennially atop the Soviet elite league standings. • Combined, the two teams boasted an astounding 37 championship titles. • Soviet goaltender Vladislav Tretiak faced seven shots before his cross-rink rival, Ken Dryden, saw a single puck come his way. The Canadiens scored two goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Early in the second period, Boris Mikhailov scored one for the Soviets before the Habs got a third goal. The Red Army scored two more in the third. • Although the Canadiens outshot the Soviets 38-13, the historic game ended in a 3-3 draw.

New Soviet State (1922) - Historical Song (Песня о мечте Свой среди чужих,чужой среди своих)

After a bloody conflict with the whole world, a people, a new society, won their first war... First World War, Civil War, Foreign Interventions...
