David Spriggs - Vision 2010 Acrylic paint on multiple sheets of transparent film, display case, springs, lighting. 108 x 130 x 36 inches / 274 x 330 x 92 cm. The work of David Spriggs lies in a space between the 2 and 3 dimensions. His installations use a technique he developed in 1999 using multiple painted layered images in space to create unique 3D ephemeral like forms. He explores the representation and strategies of power, the symbolic meanings of colour, movement, and the thresholds of form and perception. The subjects depicted in his work specifically relate to the breakdown and recreation of form and volume - as seen through his interest in cyclones, explosions, and forces. David Spriggs is currently is based in Montreal. He was born in 1978 in Manchester, England, and immigrated to Canada in 1992. He received his Master of Fine Arts from Concordia University, Montreal, and his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University in Vancouver. He has recently exhibited work at the Galerie de l'UQAM in Montreal, the Louis Vuitton Gallery in Macau, and at the Sharjah Biennal 9 in the UAE. His work can be found in the collections of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of Quebec.

Stratachrome, is the first in the new series of work considering contemporary notions of colour, and their relation to issues of power and perception. Using the structure of the gallery itself, the installation is created by layering painted sheets of transparent film which are hung between floor and ceiling to reveal both two and three-dimensional imagery. He is coauthor of Beyond the Mountaintop: King's Prescription to Poverty, a policy brief written to mark the 40th anniversary of King's assassination. According to the brief, the three key policy levers that Dr. King helped to push (stronger anti-discrimination laws, increased unionization and an effective minimum wage) have been all but destroyed. As the nation struggles with an economic downturn, mortgage crisis and soaring joblessness, King's prescription for ending poverty 40 years ago remains as urgent now as it was then. The policy brief concludes that America's public policy agenda should include five priorities: (1) a full employment economy (2) restoration and enforcement of basic labor market standards (3) ensuring a fair and progressive tax system including Earned Income Tax Credit (4) protection of workers' freedom of association and right to join a union and (5) adoption and enforcement of antidiscrimination laws that assure opportunities for workers traditionally denied good jobs.
