Lloyd Price - Stagger Lee (Original Stereo)
The story of the song "Stagger Lee" may surprise some of you since it was based on a true occurrence, the murder of a man named William "Billy" Lyons by a St. Louis cab driver and pimp named Stagger Lee Shelton on Christmas Eve, 1895. The events surrounding the murder became a folk tale and then a song first recorded by Herb Wiedoeft and his band in 1924 (in much the same way "Tom Dooley" became a folk song for the Kingston Trio). In 1958, Lloyd Price took the song with some changes in the lyrics and made it his first #1 hit on the pop charts, and it reached that point on New Year's day, 1959. The song is on Rolling Stone's list of "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time", and was later prominently featured in the 1989 film "Shag" starring Phoebe Cates.

My favourite Taj Mahal album is 'De Ole Folks at Home', which includes this track. His feel for roots music on that album is incredible. It would be great to hear him do another album by himself again with just acoustic instruments such as guitar and banjo like he did on that album. Stagger Lee is a popular blues folk song covered many times which is based on a murder by Stagger Lee Shelton. The first published version of the song was by folklorist John Lomax in 1910. The song was well-known in African American communities along the lower Mississippi River by the 1910s. Before World War II, it was commonly known as "Stack O Lee". WC Handy wrote that this probably was a nickname for a tall person, comparing him to the tall smokestack of the large steamboat Robert E. Lee. By the time WC Handy wrote that explanation in the 1920s, "Stack O' Lee" was already familiar in United States popular culture, with recordings of the song made by such artists such as Frank Hutchison (1927), Mississippi John Hurt (1928) and Cliff Edwards (1928). In Hurt's version, as in all such pieces, there are many (sometimes anachronistic) variants on the lyrics. Several older versions give Billy's last name as "De Lyons" or "Deslile". LINK: tinyurl.com Not entirely content with being a 1950s R&B star on the strength of his immortal New Orleans classic "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," singer Lloyd Price yearned for massive pop acceptance. He found it, too, with a storming rock & roll reading of the ancient blues "Stagger Lee" and the unabashedly pop-slanted "Personality" and "I'm Gonna Get Married" (the latter pair sounding far removed indeed from his Crescent City beginnings). Growing up in Kenner, a suburb of New Orleans, Price was exposed to seminal sides by Louis Jordan, the Liggins brothers, Roy Milton, and Amos Milburn through the jukebox in his mother's little fish-fry joint. Lloyd and his younger brother Leo (who later co-wrote Little Richard's "Send Me Some Lovin'") put together a band for local consumption while in their teens. Bandleader Dave Bartholomew was impressed enough to invite Specialty Records boss Art Rupe to see the young singer (this was apparently when Bartholomew was momentarily at odds with his longtime employers at rival Imperial). At his very first Specialty date in 1952, Price sang his classic eight-bar blues "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (its rolling piano intro courtesy of a moonlighting Fats Domino).
