Now he is back as a Solo Artist with his second Album "Deep in my heart", produced an released in Germany. Don Mellow, a real professional when it comes to making music, doesn't leave his audience sitting wherever he's performing. On the stage and in the studio a perfectionist with music running through his veins. He amazes his audience when he swirls, dances, sings and swings on the stage, sometimes with percussion, sometimes with the guitar..... The education at the International School for Musical-Entertainment has left its marks. Don's biography is as dazzling as his spirit. Born in Paramaribo, the capital of Surinam (north from Brazil), he learned early how "to do" south-American rhythms and the sort of attraction that this music has upon listeners. As lead singer and musician of various south-American groups, he toured through the big continent. Don came to Europe with the band Falling Stones. The first station was Holland. He set-up his first band there, the "Hank + Stailles Steel Band". The first record with this band - Wy willen WW He improved his skills parallel to the concerts and tours. To me, as a Trinidadian born in a certain era, this is the best and most meaningful piece of street theatre ever recorded on audio. In 1956, a brash young singer who called himself the Mighty Sparrow was just about to establish his dominance of the calypso world that would last decades. We were being introduced to rock and roll music with hits like Bill Haley's "Rock Around the clock" This was the year that Dr Eric Williams and the Peoples National Movement changed Trinidad politics for ever. The steel-band was beginning to explore its potential as a serious musical entity, and had already established itself as the predominant musical sound on the road at Trinidad's carnival. The local music scene was changing, but it was still a time when a band could learn a tune overnight to be played on the road, as happened with "Yankees Gone", which had won Sparrow the Calypso crown the night before at Dimanche Gras. On J'ouvert morning that year, American audiophile Emory Cook hung up his microphones on Frederic Street, Port of Spain and recorded the proceedings as the steel-bands paraded by. The steel-bands featured were North Stars playing 'Puerto Rican Mambo', Starland - 'Back Bay Shuffle',Invaders-'Yankees Gone', Cairo-"Yankees Gone" and Trinidad All Stars -Puerto Rican Mambo . A brass band also hurried by in the quick tempo style that was popular with those bands back then in contrast to the more laid back tempo of the steel-bands.You can also clearly hear the sound of <b>...</b>

Here some selections from the historic TASPO steel band that attended the Festival of Britain in 1951. These are the eleven members chosen to attend the festival (Courtesy Pan- Jumbie.com) . Theo Stephens from Free French -- San Fernando Belgrave Bonaparte from Southern Symphony -- Oropouche Andrew De Labistide from Chicago -- East Dry River (Port of Spain) Philmore Davidson from Syncopators (later became City Syncopators) -- Quarry Street (Port of Spain) Patsy Orman Haynes from Casablanca -- East Dry River (Port of Spain) Winston "Spree" Simon from Tokyo -- East Dry River (Port of Spain) Dudley Smith from Rising Sun in Belmont Ellie Mannette From Invaders in Woodbrook Sterling Betancourt from Crossfire Granville Sealey from Tripoli Anthony Williams from North Stars the latter three bands from St. James. According to Pan Jumbie, Granville Sealy did not make the trip. The players on this album, which also included a saxophone and vocalist are not identified in the liner notes. The 45 rpm album was produced in England by Collector Records.

The Merrymakers -The Leeward Islands Steelband was formed in 1958 and was led by Zachariah Herbert. It was comprised of members from Antigua, Dominica and Monserrat. This delightful period 45 RPM album "The Merrymakers Steel the Show" was recorded in 1960 in England, and includes :The traditional "Yellow Bird", "Kalu",Lord Kitchener's "Trouble in Arima" and a jazzy(be-bop) arrangement of "I lost my Baby"

Maines Atlantic Clarion Steel Band - Pan Coalition When one thinks of the state of Maine in the USA one thinks of shipbuilding, fishing and the sea. The steelpan instrument or a major steelband is not what one would normally associate with the USAs northernmost state. And yet inexplicably this is exactly what we have in the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band. During the recent Montreal International Steelpan Music Festival, When Steel Talks got to see and hear Atlantic Clarion Steel Band in action as part of the Pan Coalition performing side, of which Atlantic Clarion is a significant portion. The additional members hail from a couple smaller bands also located in Maine. The Atlantic Clarion Steel Band is indeed a serious music outfit. He and his steel orchestra won the 2006 panorama with his arrangement and their performance of "This One's For U, Bradley", a song he wrote as a tribute to the master. Mr. Sharpe's band Phase II Pan Groove took to the stage last night as the defending champions of the National Panorama.
