Steve Young ~~ Behold The Stars~~.wmv

Along with Look Homeward Angel, Long Time Rider is Steve Young's most obscure and difficult-to-come-by recording. It is also one of the most lyrically adventurous, intimate, and musically minimal and moving albums he's ever committed to tape. Issued in 1990, this is a eight-cut, 45-minute album that deals with acceptance, willingness, and determination to forgive others and yourself, and ultimately to find compassion. While this may seem unlikely territory for one of American music's true outlaws, it is at least as "real" as the inner landscape of the man who wrote "Lonesome, On'ry and Mean" decades ago. A new age cowboy Young is not. "Behold the Stars" is a gorgeous acoustic guitar ballad that looks deeply into eternity as an expression of the moment: "Behold the stars/See how they haunt/The dreams we have behind these bars...." And then there's the devastatingly beautiful "War of Ancient Days," where the song's protagonist goes back to his former wife and adversary and commits to throwing down his sword: "I didn't come here to see who gets the best deal/You can have the stuff I will survive/But I came here to wage war on the poverty/That I see in our eyes/And I'm here to pay the tallest price/For now I'm willing to change my ways/And I'm here to lay the wreath of peace at your feet/And end this war of ancient days." "Have a Laugh" and "My Love" were later recut for the album Switchblades of Love, and these versions are significantly different. Virtually every cut here ...

Steve Young - "The Ballad Of William Sycamore" (from Benet poem)

A brilliant outtake from Young's 1972 album SEVEN BRIDGES ROAD, which was inexplicably left off the album itself. The lyrics are from the poem of the same name by Stephen Vincent Benet, published in 1922. If you like this, check out my blog: listenpeopleblog.blogspot.com

Steve Young: BYU Highlights

After Jim McMahon graduated from BYU, he was replaced by Steve Young. Not considered a great fit for BYU because of his style of play, Steve Young adapted to the pass happy BYU Cougars and had a great college career. The instrumental used is Roc the Mic by Beanie Segal.

1982 Holiday Bowl: Ohio State v. BYU (Drive-Thru)

www.ourhonordefend.com Brigham Young moved the ball down the field with ease to begin the game, suggesting that Ohio State's secondary under Dom Capers was simply not accustomed to seeing a team with an offensive scheme like Lavell Edwards employed in Provo. Likewise, after Brigham Young missed the field goal to end that first drive, it became clear that Brigham Young was simply not accustomed to seeing a team as overly physical as Ohio State was. Ohio State raced down the field on their first drive and got a field goal. Steve Young, probably the best player on the field that night of any team, responded by finding Neil Balholm for 6 and a 7-3 lead. 3 plays later, Tim Spencer broke free for a 61 yard touchdown. Ohio State never looked back. Ohio State's offensive line dictated the tempo of the game, allowing Tim Spencer to power forward for 167 yards, 2 TDs on 21 carries en route to MVP honors. Jimmy Gayle contributed another 2 touchdowns in his 17 carry, 80 yard performance. With Brigham Young focused on stopping the run up the middle, the passing game opened up when Ohio State wanted it. Gary Williams had 5 catches for 83 yards in his final game as a Buckeye. Tomczak, so maligned in the 3 game losing streak, made no mistakes (11 132 yards) and contributed a touchdown on a designed bootleg rollout. At the end of the game, Lavell Edwards said Ohio State was the most physical team he had seen in his (then) 12 years as a head coach. Meanwhile, Ohio State 345 yard, 47 point ...

Steve Young - Seven Bridges Road (1972)

Covered by The Eagles and Dolly Parton, the 1972 version of Seven Bridges Road by Steve Young remains the best. Haunting and beautiful melody, words & vocal. As Waylon Jennings famously said "If he gets any better i'm gonna kill him"!

Written by Guy Clark, recorded by Steve Young on his 1976 album "Renegade Picker" and the 2005 re-release "Renegade Picker/No Place To Fall" In as much of an admirer of Guy Clark as I am, I am partial to Steves recording of this particular song. Tracy Nelson is providing harmony vocals but I've always envisioned Waylon singing those harmonies...I'd be in Heaven!
