In martial arts, we can find a lot of flexible ways to train our techniques using the surrounding environment and the limited equipment we have. In this particular video I am using the parallel bars to train my sticky hands to enhance my speed and condition my forearms. If we want to train against metal bars like this first we should hit the bars slow and light. Once our hands and forearms get stronger we then speed it up and put more force into our techniques. Just have fun with it, we don`t have to follow any strict pattern that limited our movements. Enjoy training and keep fit!

All too often though they become overly formalized practices that leave the original intent far behind, and as a result practitioners fail to develop any real, usable martial arts skill. At Falling Leaves Kung Fu in Tempe, we strive to practice these drills in the spirit which they were developed, a real, "live" drill. We ran these stationary drills taking turns being the "anchor" and then cycling through the line. each person got two minutes as the anchor, then at the end I wanted to shoot the clip and the students thought it would be funny to challenge me to just stay in the anchor spot until i dropped. Unfortunately we ran out of space on the sd card before I gassed completely but i was just about all in by the end anyway. So what we were doing is trying for the anchor to start out as "lower hand" and then we play "control". Definition of "control" is lower hand can tap the partners arms and body (like striking) and try to get to "upper hand". upper hand can pull / push from the get go and wants to try and defend from the lower hand attacks. both upper and lower attempt to maintain contact/stickiness throughout. once lower gets to be upper then the roles reverse. I take no credit at all, as my Sifu just showed some superior blocking skills. If you know what to look for you can see tons of different concepts being applied. The 1st thing to notice is that a skilled practioner really just blocks the majority of the time, the unskilled, tries to cover that up by simply blizting the attack. Its very common in the wing chun world for many to do that. Also, what how blocks come about, its not done by the hand but by the body. You can visually see this since sifu's center stays consistent throughout, and simply turns in conjunction with the amount of force, while the hands don't chase out which is a common no no in wing chun. Let the attacks come to your house, and the closer they are the safer it is for you. All to often, people will shoot out their hands trying to reach out to block. Blocking is a simple concept but difficult to do, know the person's centerline, have your triangle constantly point to that indivudals center line, and go with the force. While there are many more concepts involved these are the general three which one must follow to develop superior blocking skills. Finally in some glimpses you see freezing out motions, where you can literally lock out your opponents motions, by simply holding your structure and techincally freezing his hand motion. Thus, the term sticky hands, the real quick battles are getting the lines of attack for proper shooting. This was 2 years after I posted the very first superior blocking, at a seminar we held in 2007. Right after chi saoing with him, I felt horrible. But, after getting to watch the tape of this, I actually felt pretty good in my chi sao with Sifu. If you watch this, there doesn't seem to be much going on, since I think I took maybe less then 15 attacks within a span of 12 minutes chi saoing with him. But, for some reason on this day, if you watch Sifu, he literally shut down the door or the attack line period. I just could not put him back into my target scope to take a decent shot. Now, those 15 attacks I talked about earlier, probably where ill-advised attacks, since he never was dead center in the cross-hair's, but heck, he gave me nothing. In the end, the battle of structures was no contest, his stance, his triangle, was just dominating. But I walked away with some major knowledge from this chi sao, and why my motions for both blocking and attacking were to slow.

All to often, people try to use pure speed and muscle and just simply blitz the non-confrontational opponent. But realistically people do fight back. Attacking done right is not a numbers game where you throw 10 attacks and hope 2 to 3 will land. The right mentality for a Wing Chun fighter is not being wasteful like a solider with a gatling gun who simply has fire power but waste rounds of ammunition. Instead you are a sniper, where almost every attack is almost guaranteed to hit and where you don't fire to waste bullets. The first drill is called freeze frame drill, in this simple concept drill, one attacks the other blocks, but only after the hit, giving the blocker the development of seeing how to regain the line, and the attacker time to also figure out where the nearest line of attack is. Once the drill can be done properly you take it to the next level, once you attack, the blocker once again tries to block, but by the time he initiates the block, you takeover his motion and throw your next attack. You then continue this process over and over again. In the end, you want to develop the skill, were you throw out an attack and can just rain it upon your opponent, who will never have the ability to block your attack, since your always one step ahead of him. In the end, this is what chain punching is really like in Wing <b>...</b>
