Johann Strauss II - The Blue Danube Waltz

Title : Johann Strauss II , The Blue Danube Waltz Date : 1867 From Wikipedia,The Blue Danube is the common English title of An der schönen blauen Donau op. 314 (On the Beautiful Blue Danube), a waltz by Johann Strauss II, composed in 1867. Originally performed 9 February 1867 at a concert of the Wiener Männergesangsverein (Vienna Men's Choral Association), it has been one of the most consistently popular pieces of music in the classical repertoire. Its initial performance was only a mild success, however, and Strauss is reputed to have said "The devil take the waltz, my only regret is for the coda -- I wish that had been a success!" The waltz originally had an accompanying song text written by Josef Weyl. Strauss adapted it into a purely orchestral version for the World's Fair in Paris that same year, and it became a great success in this form. The instrumental version is by far the most commonly performed today. An alternate text by Franz von Gernerth, Donau so blau (Danube so blue), is also used on occasion. The sentimental Viennese connotations of the piece have made it into a sort of unofficial Austrian national anthem. It is a traditional encore piece at the annual Vienna New Year's Concert. The first few bars are also the interval signal of Osterreich Rundfunk's overseas programs. It is reported by composer Norman Lloyd in his "Golden Encyclopedia of Music" that when asked by Frau Strauss for an autograph, the composer Johannes Brahms autographed Mrs. Strauss's fan ...

Johann Strauss - Vienna Waltz

One wonderful waltz of Johann Strauss Johann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 -- June 3, 1899; also known as fully Johann Baptist Strauss, and Johann Strauss, Jr. was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as "The Waltz King", and was largely responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century. Strauss was born in St. Ulrich (now a part of Neubau), the son of Johann Strauss I, another composer of dance music. His father did not wish him to become a composer, but rather a banker; however, the son defied his father's wishes, and went on to study music with the composer Joseph Drechsler and the violin with Anton Kollmann, the ballet répétiteur of the Vienna Court Opera. Strauss had two younger brothers, Josef and Eduard Strauss, who became composers of light music as well, although they were never as well-known as their elder brother. Some of Johann Strauss's most famous works include The Blue Danube, Vienna Waltz, Kaiser-Walzer, Tales from the Vienna Woods, the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, and the Pizzicato Polka. Among his operettas, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron are the most well-known.

Johann Strauss II. - Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald (Walzer, op.325)

Get mp3 at www.planet-vienna.com This is my personal favourite orchestral version of this terrific masterpiece. Played by Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Conductor: Robert Stolz (!) Robert Stolz himself is known as the last composer of the classical viennese aera. He was the one who knew best how a Strauss waltz has to be arranged and how the orchestra has to play it. That's why I adore this recording so much! It's 100% authentic and even the Vienna Philharmonics won't do it better. I had to shorten the track coz it was longer than 10 minutes. The intro has been removed. But never mind, the zither theme of the intro is played again at the end of the waltz. ___________________ Tales from the Vienna woods ウィーンの森の物語小约翰·施特劳斯योहान स्ट्रॉस दुसरा ヨハン・シュトラウス2世

Johann Strauss II - Die Fledermaus Overture

Title : Johann Strauss II - Die Fledermaus Overture From Wikipedia, Die Fledermaus (in English: The Bat;' in French: La Chauve-souris') is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libretto by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée. The original source for Die Fledermaus is a farce by German playwright Julius Roderich Benedix (1811--1873), Das Gefängnis (The Prison). Another source is a French vaudeville play, Le réveillon, by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. This was first translated by Carl Haffner into a non-musical play to be produced in Vienna. However, the peculiarly French custom of the réveillon (a midnight supper party) caused problems, which were solved by the decision to adapt the play as a libretto for Johann Strauss, with the réveillon replaced by a Viennese ball. At this point Haffner's translation was handed over for adaptation to Richard Genée, who subsequently claimed not only that he had made a fresh translation from scratch but that he had never even met Haffner. The operetta premièred on April 5, 1874 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria and has been part of the regular operetta repertoire ever since. It currently appears as number 19 on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operatic works in North America.

Richard Strauss - Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30

Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 (Thus Spoke Zarathustra or Thus Spake Zarathustra) is a tone poem by Richard Strauss, composed during 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical treatise of the same name. The piece is divided into nine sections played with only three definite pauses. Strauss named the sections after selected chapters of the Nietzsche's book: 1. "Einleitung" (Introduction): according to the interpretations, it should represent the Creation or the coming of the new age of the Overman and so, because of its evocative and declaimed aspect, it is led back to the Overman's motto. 2. "Von den Hinterweltlern" (Of the Hereaftergo'ers): here the brass quote the gregorian cento "Credo in unum Deum" or "I believe in one God" to represent faith at the top synthesis. 3. "Von der großen Sehnsucht" (Of the Great Longing): maybe it represents the age of "Sturm und Drang"; here there's a liturgical quotation from "Magnificat". 4. "Von den Freuden und Leidenschaften" (Of the Joys and Passions): the word to the strings, at the top tension; the trombones expose the theme of "Taedium Vitae". 5. "Das Grablied" (The Grave-Song): part where the strings prevail. 6. "Von der Wissenschaft" (Of Science): it is a fugue whose subject all only the twelve notes to represent scientism, positivism and maybe, to ridicule the rising dodecaphony. 7. "Der Genesende" (The Convalescent): it completes the tension of the previous movement, then, after a rough pause determined by a rip ...

R. Strauss's "Salome": An Introduction

In the final video of our season-long "A Golden Age of Music" series, Carnegie Hall's Director of Artistic Planning Jeremy Geffen introduces Richard Strauss's "Salome." Based on Oscar Wilde's scandalous play of the same name, Strauss composed "Salome" as "essentially a tone poem with voices." This complex work includes two murders, but rather than taking place graphically on stage, the brutal action is conveyed by the music. The one-act opera is performed in a concert version at Carnegie Hall on May 24, by The Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, with soloists including soprano Nina Stemme as Salome and bass-baritone Eric Owens in the role of Jochanaan. Richard Strauss - Salomé - Dance of the Seven Veils

Salome is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss to a German libretto by the composer, based on Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of the French play Salomé by Oscar Wilde. Strauss dedicated the opera to his friend Sir Edgar Speyer. The opera is famous (at the time of its premiere, infamous) for its "Dance of the Seven Veils". It is now better known for the more shocking final scene, where Salome declares her love to the severed head of John the Baptist. It was first performed at the Hofoper in Dresden on 9 December 1905, and within two years, it had been given in 50 other opera houses. Picture: Salome, Pierre Bonnaud. Der Rosenkavalier- Strauss - Final Scene

Strauss - Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) / Gwyneth Jones (Feldmarchallin), Brigitte Fassbaender (Octavian), Lucia Popp (Sophie), Benno Kusche (Faninal), Carlos Kleiber (Conductor), Munich Opera (1979) With 3 great singers singing the leading female parts, how could you go wrong? This was a momentous night, with Carlos Kleiber leading the Munich State Opera Orchestra superbly. The production by Otto Schenk is colourful and well directed. A wonderful addition to the DG Catalogue. Our "young couple" are Brigitte Fassbaender and Lucia Popp, who join Gwyneth Jones (Feldmarchallin) in gorgeous singing and equally excellent acting. In the emotional climax of the opera, the Marschallin gracefully releases Octavian, encouraging him to follow his heart and love Sophie. She then withdraws elegantly to the next room to talk with Faninal. As soon as she is gone, Sophie and Octavian run to each other's arms. Faninal and the Marschallin return to find the lovers locked in an embrace. After a few bittersweet glances to her lost lover, the Princess departs with Faninal. Sophie and Octavian follow after another brief but ecstatic love duet, and the opera ends

Johann Strauss II - Rosen aus dem Süden - Walzer, Op. 388

"It was an eventful evening; the house was filled to the gables in order to hear a new work by our Strauss, for Strauss enjoys the increasingly rare title 'our' which is the ultimate superlative for an artist: Positive = Herr Strauss Comparative = Strauss Superlative = Our Strauss!" So wrote the Fremdenblatt newspaper (3 October) in its review of the highly successful première of Johann Strauss's operetta Das Spitzentuch der Königin ('The Queen's Lace Handkerchief'), which opened at Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 1 October 1880. The composer himself, though delighted by the reception accorded his latest stage work, was unconvinced that it would enjoy a lasting success. But he had no such doubts about the magnificent orchestral waltz, Rosen aus dem Süden, which he had hurriedly assembled from themes in his operetta, and whose piano edition his publisher, Cranz, was able to advertise in the press (together with the first Spitzentuch potpourri) just four days after the theatrical première! The honour of conducting the first performance of Rosen aus dem Süden fell to Johann's brother, Eduard, who was still on a concert tour of Germany when Spitzentuch received its première. Not until 7 November, therefore, at Eduard's Sunday afternoon concert in the Musikverein, did the waltz begin its triumphant conquest of the world, comprising, as it did, many of the musical highlights from the operetta. Two numbers which had drawn especial praise from the Spitzentuch first-night ...
