Stream live multi-bitrate video over HTTP to Flash and iOS
Learn how to use Flash Media Live Encoder and Flash Media Server to capture, encode, and deliver live video to Flash and iOS devices. In this lesson, we'll use Flash Media Live Encoder to capture and encode the stream at multiple bitrates. We'll use Flash Media Server's Set-level File Generator tool to create set-level F4M and M3U8 files that describe the multi-bitrate set of streams. To play the live stream, we'll request the set-level F4M file from Strobe Media Playback. To play the live stream from an iPad, we'll request the set-level M3U8 file from Safari.

Apple released the GM build of iOS 4.2 to developers today. This build is pretty much the final version right before the public release. So it gets developers on board with the newest firmware and the media updated with the newest features. This build was main meant to bring the iPad on board the iOS 4 train. This will now add multitasking as well as other iOS 4 features that the iPad previously did not have and needed. AirPlay was added, where you can stream media from on iOS device to your Apple TV and watch it in full screen. Another great feature was AirPrint, allowing you to print thing from your iOS device wirelessly, as long as it is on the same WiFi network. Few smaller changes were added as well, like I said, this update was mainly for the iPad. Coinciding with the much-anticipated release of the iPad 2, Rackspace is releasing version 2.0 of its iOS app for Rackspace Cloud. The new app provides system administrators tremendous flexibility in managing their Cloud Servers and Cloud Files and the freedom to do so from virtually anywhere. "With this app, we fully implemented everything in the API," explains Mike Mayo, Senior Developer of Mobile Apps for Rackspace Hosting. "[With the original iOS app], we were mostly trying to hurry up and get an app out in time for launch date. This time, we spent more time on it. We give you more control of your cloud servers, better control of your cloud files, better ways to access cloud files. You can now open them, print them, stream media to an Apple TV—pretty much everything you could possibly pull off on the iPad." The app allows you to see all the Cloud Servers on your account and view details about each server. You can create new cloud servers, rename Cloud Servers, resize Cloud Servers and perform hard and soft reboots. While developing Castlerama, we had to face the fact that newer devices such as iPhone4s and iPad2s are very different from their predecessors, iPhone3GSs and iPads, in that the former have twice as much memory. In order to have the app run on all devices, we had to compromise quite a bit, pushing the old devices to their limits (risking crash if other applications are left running) while keeping the new devices well behind their capabilities.
