Student protest 24 November 2010 - London

A video of the student protest held in London on the 24th of November. Trying to capture a 'fair' impression of the student protest; people standing up for their rights, fighting the cuts, the vandalized police van, people dancing and cheering, protesting peacefully, holding speeches, and last, but definitely not least, the police using the 'kettling' tactic to control the crowd. I hope you'll agree with me after watching this video that the majority of the students were protesting peacefully, and that the police had no reason to keep the crowd stuck at Whitehall for hours in the freezing cold without facilities like food, drinks and toilets for most of the time. But hey, let me hear YOUR thoughts - while watching this video, my question for you is; was this necessary??!! *whoops, small mistake in the date in the first few seconds of the video; I put 22 November 2010 - this should be 24 November 2010 of course. Perhaps I shouldn't do any video-editing when still in a state of shock and disbelief about the protest. ;) Twitter: @levina_

Video: Violence erupts at 'illegal' student protest in Canada

Week-long demonstrations over a proposed rise in university tuition fees have erupted into violence in Quebec. Police in Montreal clashed with thousands of students who accuse the government of sabotaging negotiations for a settlement. Riot police have so far arrested 85 people after a government exclusion of a student group from talks triggered activist ire. Students have flooded Montreal's streets over the past few days, up in arms over tuition fee hikes that would see costs rise by 75 percent over the next five years. Thursday's riots were declared illegal after demonstrators reportedly pelted police officers with projectiles and threw garbage into the streets. London Student Protest - Horses Charging Students in Parliament Square 09/12/2010 Demo2010 dayx3

See the compilation I made of footage I shot on the day on my channel, entitled "Shame On You" . On the frontline in Parliament Square on the 9th Dec 2010. It's all kicking off when the police move to the side and the horses charge towards us. There is not much I can do but film the ensuing mahem all around me. It's worth waiting until the end when the metal fences start to be passed forward and used as barriers against the police, one is passed over our heads, it's so heavy we all have to put our fingers through the mesh to hold it up, just as the police are battering out hands with their truncheons!

'Cop brutality fuels fire of student anger in Canada'

160 protests within just two months - and Canada's student uprising continues unabated. And, with new clashes on Thursday night, the standoff over tuition fee hikes is turning increasingly violent. Centering on the country's second largest city of Montreal, clashes resumed after talks collapsed between student leaders and authorities. Riot officers charged, maced and detained dozens of protesters, while the police chief publicly complained that his forces were worn out. The students are incensed over a tuition fees rise which the government says is necessary. But journalist Bernard Desgagne, says heavy-handed policing will only provoke the students further. Quebec students protest university-fee rise

Tens of thousands of students in the Canadian province of Quebec have been protesting over plans to raise university fees. Until now, they have been paying just over $2000 a year, the lowest in the country. For seven weeks, there have been class boycotts, demonstrations and occasional angry confrontations with police. The students now plan to target Quebec's unpopular government. With an election expected next year, the students are threatening to use their votes to keep tuition fees low. They were also carrying signs against the policy of tuition fees increase. It's been weeks since the protest began with around 170 000 students involved to stand against plains to raise tuition. To break the deadlock Quebek Premier Jean Charest has promised a rise in scholarship and minor increase of the tuition, but the students rejected the deal, calling for a tuition freeze. Chile police clash with student protesters

At least 25000 university student protesters have marched through the streets of Santiago, Chile's capital, calling for reforms in education, local news reported. Police fired water cannons to disperse demonstrators, after some students broke through police barricades and others hurled stones at anti-riot officers. Fifteen people were arrested, according to authorities. The students have been pushing the government for years to boost funding in a country with among the highest university fees in the world. Chilean university students receive only 15 percent state funding, the lowest of all countries part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. When taking into consideration the average family income in Chile, university fees are nearly three times higher than the United States, Japan, and Australia. Chile's president Sebastian Pinera has promised more scholarships and said that debt for 100000 poor students would be recalculated, amongst other reforms, but student leaders say it is not enough. "Today we are calling for the recovery of public education, equal access to education, quality, greater financing in the sector and, as always, regulation of the private sector and with greater involvement of the state to improve education to stop putting thousands and thousands of families into debt. We want greater participation from students, workers and teachers in the decisions being made at the universities," Catholic University Student Federation ...

Student Protest in Rome

The song that they are singing is called Fischia Il Vento (thanks to those of you who helped me figure that out!) The footage from November 30 is from RussiaToday www.youtube.com A message from Filippo: Well, again, hello, I'm an Italian student... and fortunately you saw some of the more pacific protests. Tuesday november 30th was an extremely important day in Italy. All over the country, in every city, thousands of students gathered and occupied (took over) public buildings, like the train stations, the airports, and so on so forth. The reason was to finally show to the public our protest against the "riforma gelmini", a reform that changes the public university system. See, in Italy there is a very good public school system, and most major universities are public (unlike in most other countries). The education and preparation coming out with a ba is really top-notch. What this "reform" does, is that it cuts funds for the university. This way, researchers will not be able to become professors, because when older ones retire, no new ones will be hired; many faculties will be closed, and since in Italy there are not many job offers, almost all of the Phd students from now on will not find jobs. If you want to know the numbers, 8 billion euros of cuts in 2 years to the University, more than 5000 courses closed, all while instead favoring the private universities, which in Italy are very few, with tax cuts ecc. And yes, demonstration =protest :D It was really a historic day ...

Police block violent protesters as students rally in Rome

Police vans and lines of officers in riot gear blocked access to much of Rome's historic centre on Tuesday to keep thousands of student protesters from reaching parliament. The police blockades prevented several lines of marchers from converging on the square outside the Chamber of Deputies and blocked bus and tram routes. Riot police eventually followed closely behind the protesters on Via del Corso street causing the most violent group to disperse. Lawmakers in Italy on Tuesday will vote on a contested reform bill which many students and professors say will give the private sector too much involvement in the state university system. They claim funding cuts mean faculty positions are going unfilled. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com

In angry scenes, protesters have battled with police and attacked buildings, including the Treasury and the Supreme Court. Police say eight officers were hurt in clashes. They have made nine arrests. Protests have spread to the West End with demonstrators breaking shop windows in Oxford Street. Three ministerial aides have resigned, but the fees rise survived a backbench rebellion with a 21-vote majority. Earlier protesters had forced their way into Parliament Square and pressed against lines of police in front of the Houses of Parliament. Student protests in Canada escalate as nearly 700 people were arrested on Wednesday night alone. The rallies against the proposed tuition fee increases have been going on for over a 100 days in Quebec. Many of those detained were carted off in public buses, which police converted into temporary holding pens.
