Occupy Cal: UC-Berkeley Students Rally for Public Education; Are Attacked by Riot Police

This week the Occupy movement drew thousands of California college students to protest on campuses across the state. The University of California system faces some of the steepest budget cuts and tuition hikes in the nation. Tuition and fees could increase by 81 percent over the next four years. This fall, students saw tuition hikes just a few weeks before their classes began. Community colleges and the California State University system face similar fee hikes. On Wednesday students held protests at least 10 campuses, including UC Irvine, UCLA and UC Berkeley, where police forcibly removed students and arrested 39 people. For more, we turn to a report by KPFA's John Hamilton. [Originally aired on Democracy Now!, 11/11/2011]

'Snatch Squads' Caught On Camera At London Student Rally

A YouTube video shot during the November 9 student rally in London allegedly shows plainclothes police acting as agents provocateurs among the protesting crowds. The video uploaded by the user "noshockdoc" shows two people who first engage in rough handling of one of the rally protesters. Then, reportedly, the same people are shown along with six others detaining someone behind a police cordon. The media dubbed the November 9 march against tuition fees and education cuts one of the most intensively-policed events to take place in London. The force had 4000 officers on duty on the day, and they were authorized to use rubber bullets if necessary. This was never needed, however. The Met reported that 24 arrests were made on the day. Some of the protesters reported incidents of violence which they said had been caused by the security forces. "The police tried to provoke people to react violently, and some people had to act in self-defense against police attacks, but we all supported one another and prevented the police from causing a riot," one of the activists, identified only as 'Dan', told the Oxford University student newspaper Cherwell.

AUC students' rally طلاب الجامعة الأمريكية يهتفون ضد العسكر

On February 2, AUC students gathered in the plaza area of the new campus to hold prayers for economics student, Omar Aly Saad Mohsen, who was killed in clashes in Port Said the night before. Students then marched across campus, chanting fervidly against the military council and urging retribution for the death of their fellow fallen student. While the AUC community was deeply shaken by such events, the administration declared Sunday February 5 to be a day of mourning. A memorial service will be held. MONTREAL POLICE ARREST 90 DURING PROTEST

Confrontations between police and protesters continued in Montreal Saturday as dozens of demonstrators were arrested outside a convention centre. Police said 89 people were arrested Saturday after trying to disrupt the second day of a conference on the development of northern Quebec. Police had arrested a 24-year-old man earlier in the day for obstruction of justice. In the wake of the protest, which was declared illegal at about noon, conference attendees were searched to ensure demonstrators didn't enter the event. Saturday's demonstration went ahead despite the cold and rainy weather. "I think people are starting to get frustrated," Myriam Moore, a 21-year-old student at Universite de Quebec a Montreal, told The Canadian Press. "The police are abusing their power." Protesters were issued a warning before police moved in to start making arrests. Those arrested were put on city buses, and will likely be fined and charged for breaking municipal bylaws, CTV Montreal's Aphrodite Salas reported. However, some protesters could still face criminal charges, including mischief. The heavy rain and heavy police presence sent the protesters home by later afternoon Saturday. There were no reports of vandalism. Protests against a planned tuition hike, Plan Nord and police reaction to previous demonstrations have raged across Quebec in the past few weeks. A raucous protest on Friday appeared to indicate that demonstrators were growing more aggressive. Seventeen people were arrested ...

Stephen Colbert's "THE ROCK ME LIKE A HERMAN CAIN" Primary Rally College of Charleston SC CofC

Three College of Charleston students filmed this video of Stephen Colbert's "THE ROCK ME LIKE A HERMAN CAIN: SOUTH CAIN-OLINA PRIMARY RALLY" which filled the College of Charleston's historic Cistern Yard. Over 5000 people were at the rally and thousands more watched from the streets surrounding the Cistern Yard. More than 150 members of international media were present. The rally will air on "The Colbert Report" on Monday, January 23, 2012. For a week now, Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report," has been calling on South Carolinians who share his values to vote for Herman Cain during this Saturday's South Carolina Republican Presidential primary. The rally supported their non-candidacies. Colbert and Cain will emerged from Cain's bus and marched through Porter's Lodge into the Cistern Yard where they spoke from a stage over the Cistern. The rally included the College of Charleston cheerleaders, dance team, pep band, and renowned gospel choir, which is comprised of 150 voices. Colbert says, "Herman is the only former candidate who truly shares my values. It's like our values were separated at birth. And our ethics are at least first cousins." Stephen Colbert, originally from Charleston and a graduate of Porter Gaud High School, is the host, writer and executive producer of "The Colbert Report," which airs Monday through Thursday on Comedy Central. Colbert is also an accomplished author and actor. "The Colbert Report" launched on October 17, 2005 and ...

California Students Stop Cal Grant Cuts

In a rare protest victory for students, a recent proposal to cut over 300 million dollars from the Cal Grants program was stopped after students and faculty protested. These cuts, which would have disproportionately hurt poor and minority students, have been warded off for now. Ana and John discuss the future ramifications. What do you think will happen next? What programs will be cut to make up for this California state budget deficit? Will students be targeted again, once this protest fervor dies down? Police block violent protesters as students rally in Rome

Police vans and lines of officers in riot gear blocked access to much of Rome's historic centre on Tuesday to keep thousands of student protesters from reaching parliament. The police blockades prevented several lines of marchers from converging on the square outside the Chamber of Deputies and blocked bus and tram routes. Riot police eventually followed closely behind the protesters on Via del Corso street causing the most violent group to disperse. Lawmakers in Italy on Tuesday will vote on a contested reform bill which many students and professors say will give the private sector too much involvement in the state university system. They claim funding cuts mean faculty positions are going unfilled. RT on Facebook: www.facebook.com RT on Twitter: twitter.com
