What is Subjective (Bayesian) Probability?

www.criticalthinkeracademy.com This is a sample video from my tutorial course titled "What is Probability?". Click the link above to see the full table of contents on CriticalThinkerAcademy.com. Probability concepts are important in everyday reasoning about chance and uncertainty, in the formal methods of inductive logic and scientific reasoning, and in philosophical arguments of many different kinds. This course focuses on the MEANING of probability, how to understand the different things that people mean, or what scientists or mathematicians mean, when they use expressions like "the odds of getting a 2 on a dice roll is 1 or "the probability of precipitation is 60%", or "the probability of the atom decaying in one hour is 50%". There are, in fact, several different views of how such language should be interpreted. Becoming familiar with these views will help you to think more clearly and critically about situations where probability concepts arise. Table of Contents: Part 1: Introduction 1.1 Probability: Why Learn This Stuff? 1.2 What is Inductive Logic? 1.3 Probability as a Mathematical Object vs. What That Object Represents Part 2: Interpretations of The Concept of Probability 2.1 Classical Probability 2.2 Logical Probability 2.3 Frequency Interpretations 2.4 Subjective Probability 2.5 Propensity Interpretations

The Messy Objective/Subjective Distinction

BionicDance (and many others) have been up in arms on the question of whether ethics is objective or subjective. The problems is a lot harder than it's being given credit for, not the least of which because the distinction between objective and subjective is far from clear cut. Subjective Value

Prof. Don Boudreaux demonstrates the subjectivity of value by comparing a Che Guevara and Milton Friedman t-shirt. He finds that value cannot be determined objectively, as the value of the thing is held only the mind of the beholder. Therefore, value is not a product of the amount of labor or resources required to make it. Rather, value is determined by the preferences of individuals.

Stephanie Nash just happened to have a camera (which she quickly pulled out when she realized he was 'in the zone') and thus this is handheld with no microphone or lights - but Shinzen's brilliance comes through quite clearly. Objective Morality Does Not Exist

Read my webcomic: kanirabaxter.comicgenesis.com Visit the BionicDance store: www.cafepress.com Twitter: twitter.com Religious people like to insist that objective morality exists, but when asked to point out how this is so, they cannot point to an objective source for this morality. Even when they indicate that god made it, that only shows that they don't know what the word "objective" means. Objective morality does not, cannot exist; morality is about the value of an action or a thought, and value is relative--subjective--by definition. This vid is a redo of a much older--and rather popular--video of mine ("Objective Morality Does Not Exist", May 11, 2009) which was, unfortunately, slightly ambiguous in terms of being copyright legal, so I've redone it; the only changes are the music, the graphics, and it is no longer addressed to a specific YouTuber. Persian Song by GI Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann

from Asian Songs & Rhythms Volume 1. Recorded on a Mason & Hamlin Model A with a Zoom Q3. The following is an extract taken a book by from PD Ouspensky entitled In Search of the Miraculous. The speaker is Gurdjieff: You must first of all remember that there are two kinds of art, one quite different from the other -- objective art and subjective art. All that you know, all that you call art, is subjective art, that is, something that I do not call art at all because it is only objective art that I call art. To define what I call objective art is difficult first of all because you ascribe to subjective art the characteristics of objective art, and secondly because when you happen upon objective works of art you take them as being on the same level as subjective works of art. I will try to make my idea clear. You say -- an artist creates. I say this only in connection with objective art. In relation to subjective art: that with him 'it is created.' You do not differentiate between these, but this is where the whole difference lies. Further you ascribe to subjective art an invariable action, that is you expect works of subjective art to have the same reaction on everybody. You think, for instance, that a funeral march should provoke in everyone sad and solemn thoughts and that any dance music, a komarinsky for instance, will provoke happy thoughts. But in actual fact this is not so at all. Everything depends upon association. If on a day that a great misfortune happens to me ...

Love and Death [Woody Allen] - What if there is no God? [PL]

- Murder's immoral. - Immorality is subjective. - Yes, but subjectivity is objective. - Not in a rational scheme of perception. - Perception is irrational. It implies imminence. - But judgment of any system of phenomena exists in any rational, metaphysical or epistemological contradiction to an abstracted empirical concept such as being, or to be, or to occur in the thing itself, or of the thing itself. ... Yeah, I've said that many times.

Law of Value 1: Introduction

Full text: kapitalism101.wordpress.com This is an Introduction to a series of videos about Karl Marx's Theory of Value. FAQ: Q: Karl Marx? I thought he was a has-been. A: Forget everything you thought you knew. It's time for some fresh air. Q: What the hell is value? A: When you work you are not producing in order to fulfill your own needs. You are producing so that someone can make a profit. Society is structured toward producing economic value, not meeting society's needs. What happens to a world in which all production is subsumed by value production? Marx wanted to answer this question. Q: I think of value as being a subjective estimation of the worth of something. A: That's not a question, but I'll answer it anyway. That is a different definition of value. People do place subjective valuations on things in the market. But these subjective estimations are structured by a much larger world of "value creation" in which people are working in order to produce things for market exchange. Marx saw that it was this unique structure of production (production for exchange) that was key to understanding capitalism. The fact that we must ration our labor efficiently to produce the commodities society demands means that it is the productivity of labor which underlies our subjective estimations of value, turning seemingly disparate and atomistic consumer decisions into long-term, objective price movements. Q: Hasn't Marx's theory of value been discredited? A: No. Only ...

Chet Atkins presents Tommy Emmanuel his CGP award - THE RAREST VIDEO YOU'LL EVER SEE!!!

The "rarest" is rather subjective: I suppose if you had footage of Tommy being abducted by aliens or riding the Loch Ness Monster bareback, maybe ... but I still think this is way up there. This is footage I just discovered I had (amongst much more). I haven't seen this in twelve years and didn't realise I even filmed it! People refer to Tommy as CGP but often don't know why - well THIS is the reason. Chet Atkins presented Tommy with his award and title of Certified Guitar Player in Nashville back in 1999. I often thought Tommy knew about it before hand and just feigned suprise. But after watching it I heard Tommy exclaim as he walked off the stage he "knew nothing about this". Either way it is still a very emotional moment for Tommy as he is officially recognised by his childhood (and adulthood) hero. PS - If you appreciate these videos at all please leave a comment. I am rather dismayed at the poor reception to these videos, while someone playing a cover of a Tommy song in their bedroom (poorly) gets 15000 views...Oh well thanks for watching. Hopefully more to come
