The armed Islamist movement al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for a Wednesday car bombing in the Somali capital that killed at least 11 people and wounded at least 34. Shabab said the target was a restaurant near the Hotel Muna frequented by members of parliament, government officials and intelligence personnel. A female suicide bomber has detonated her explosives in Somalia's newly reopened national theatre in the capital, Mogadishu. A government spokesperson says at least four people have been killed. The theatre reopened for the first time in 20 years just last month. A suicide bomber detonated her explosives Wednesday at a ceremony at the national theater, killing at least 10 people, including two of the country's top sports officials. The explosion at the newly reopened theater happened as Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali was standing at the podium to deliver a speech. The prime minister was unharmed, said Abdirahman Omar Osman, the government spokesman. The attack came as Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, was starting to resume a normal life after two decades of chaos and violence.

Yemen's Defense Ministry says the casualty toll in a suicide bombing at a military parade rehearsal in the capital Sanaa has risen to 96 deaths and at least 200 wounded. Continue reading Military officials said Monday's bombing, which took place near Sanaa's presidential palace, is one of the deadliest attacks in the city in years. They say the attacker was a soldier taking part in the drill, lining up with fellow troops at a main square in the capital. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The bombing appeared to be a failed assassination attempt against the Minister of Defense, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Nasser Ahmed, who arrived at the city square for the parade just minutes before the blast ripped through the area. Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, but it came as the country's new political leadership has been stepping up the fight against al-Qaida militants holding large swaths of land in the nation's south. While fighting al-Qaida militants, Yemen's new president, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, has been embroiled in a power struggle with loyalists of ousted leader Ali Abdullah Saleh. The UN secretary-general says he fears his organisation has become a soft target, after a bomb attack on its Nigerian headquarters. Witnesses reported seeing a car packed with explosives rammed through two separate gates, exploding just outside the building's main reception. The suicide attack in Abuja killed 18 people. The UN compound houses about 400 employees and the bulk of its offices in Nigeria. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Nigerian police say they are investigating to see if the Islamist group Boko Haram might be behind the bombing. The group wants Islamic Sharia law implemented in the country and has recently launched several attacks. But violence in the past has centred on Nigerian symbols of authority. Not international organisations like the UN. Which makes this attack so much more worrying for people. Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege reports from the Nigerian capital.

Around 130 others have been hurt by the blast in the international arrivals hall, a low security area often filled with waiting family members and taxi drivers. On Monday, a suicide bomber posing as a member of the Yemen military killed at least 96 people and wounded hundreds more--most if not all soldiers--in a blast in Sanaa, Yemen's capital. The soldiers were rehearsing for a military parade in Sabeen Square near the presidential palace, Yemeni officials said. According to Agence France-Press, the bomber, carrying explosives under his uniform, "blew himself up in the middle of an army battalion." According to AFP, as many as 300 wounded soldiers were being treated at seven area hospitals. An al-Qaida source claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the BBC. "This is a real massacre," one soldier, Ahmed Sobhi, told the Associated Press. "There are piles of torn body parts, limbs and heads. This is unbelievable." According to CNN, top Yemen officials, including the country's defense minister, were at the scene but escaped unharmed. CNN said 101 soldiers were killed in the blast. The parade was to be part of a National Day of Unification celebration marking the 22nd anniversary of the May 22, 1990 union of North and South Yemen.
