September 21, 1939. British Movietone News. HMS Courageous was a warship of the Royal Navy. She was built at the Armstrong Whitworth shipyard as a "large light cruiser". Courageous, her sister HMS Glorious, and half-sister HMS Furious, were the brainchildren of Admiral Jackie Fisher, and were designed to be "light cruiser destroyers". They were originally intended to be heavy support for shallow water operations in the Baltic, which ultimately never came to pass. The design was for a light battlecruiser; while having 15-inch guns, she was actually classed by the British Navy as a light cruiser because of her light armour protection. Her keel was laid down on 28 March 1915, the ship was launched 5 February 1916, completed on 28 October 1916, and Courageous was commissioned on 4 November 1916. Courageous saw action in World War I, and then was converted into an aircraft carrier. Courageous served with the Home Fleet in the Channel Force at the start of World War II. On 17 September 1939, under the command of Captain WT Mackaig-Jones, she was on an anti-submarine patrol off the coast of Ireland. Two of her four escorting destroyers had been sent to help a merchant ship under attack. During this time, Courageous was stalked for over two hours by the U-29, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Otto Schuhart. Then Courageous turned into the wind to launch her aircraft. 04.05.1940 Rombaken fjord, near Narvik, Norway Polish destroyer GROM and destroyer FAULKNOR were on patrol off Narvik bombarding German positions when GROM was struck at 08;28 on her torpedo tubes by a German bomb. Destroyer GROM (Cdr A. Hulewicz ORP) was sunk in the explosion and her survivors were picked up by light cruiser ENTERPRISE, which lowered boats to rescue survivors at 08;35, destroyers FAULKNOR and BEDOUIN. Light cruiser AURORA picked up four survivors. Polish Lt (JG) A. Krakowski and fifty seven ratings were killed. The survivors were transferred from destroyers FAULKNOR and BEDOUIN to Battleship RESOLUTION, then to Polish destroyer BURZA. The Polish survivors were embarked on a hospital ship for the passage back to England. They departed Harstad on the 10th for the Clyde. During her operations during the Norwegian Campaign Grom was ranked by the German soldiers as probably the most hated of all the allied ships deployed to the area. This hatred was founded by the fact that the Grom took an intense interest in all hostile movements on shore and was reputed to spend hours lurking the coast in order to kill even a single German. On 4 May 1940, Grom carried out what turned out to be the last of her many Naval Gunfire Support missions in the Narvik area in the Rombaken fjord. Hitler's secret escape sub Type XIB sunk off Cape Cod on 25th August 1944 while attempting to negotiate early end to WWII en route to Argentina Apologies for the somewhat sloppy interview technique here but I think you'll agree the historic content makes it all worthwhile. Nazis fleeing Germany in 1944 used this unique submarine with a massive cargo hold (to carry gold?) in an attempt to secretly escape to the United States and thence to Argentina. They never made it past Cape Cod where the sub was sunk with depth charges dropped by a US Navy blimp. The sub was jamming radio frequencies which was unfortunate, if the blimp's radio had been working it would have almost cretainly been told NOT to sink the sub. Although the United States was officially neutral at the time, President Roosevelt had ordered the Navy to provide support to the United Kingdom in her fight against Nazi Germany. The Reuben James was escorting military material when she was torpedoed by a German submarine. Woody Guthrie, at the time singing with Pete Seeger in the Almanac Singers, wrote "The Sinking of the Reuben James" (also known as simply "Reuben James") immediately thereafter. While the song sounds like a rousing patriotic anthem, it's worth noting that both Seeger and Guthrie were pro-Soviet Communists and were opposed to US involvement in World War II, until Hitler's betrayal of Stalin caused them to shift their views 180 degrees and support US intervention. Had the sinking happened prior to the dissolution of the Hitler-Stalin pact, it is quite likely that no song at all would have been written, or, if one had, the sentiments expressed would have been quite different. The verses are to the tune of "Wildwood Flower," most famously recorded by the Carter Family, and the chorus is original to Guthrie. This version is by the Kingston Trio.
