sustainable food - people per acre of food

permies.com http veganicpermaculture.com How many acres does it take to sustainably feed one person when there are no other inputs. No manure, no compost, no animal feed, no fertilizers .... Helen Atthowe shares her experiences of growing enough food to cover 75% of her own food needs plus enough to sell at the farmers market. Based on years of experience, she attempts to estimate how many acres she would need to feed herself if she has to grow her own fertilizers. Helen's perspective is dominantly rural. Norris Thomlinson and Tulsey Latoski have carefully measured the production of food from their urban lot. They have optimized the food production a lot, and have some ideas on how to optimize it more. The also compare their initial expectations to the results they experienced. Sustainable Energy in Nepal, Solar cookers, briquette oven, pasteurizers, dryers

Documentary of a Nepalese organization called FoST, which stands for "Foundation for Sustainable Technologies". The organization FoST is providing low-cost, low-tech, easily-applicable and locally built sustainable technologies for improving the quality of life of poor rural communities and to protect the fragile environment of Nepal. Nepal is a beautiful country and is famous for it's cultural treasures, but Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and has many problems. FoST has been developing a wide selection of products such as parabolic solar cookers, solar ovens, briquette burners, solar dryers, solar water pasteurizers, water purification systems and heat retain boxes to fight burning issues such as poverty, pollution, deforestation, water-borne and smoke-borne diseases. They are also working to further empower women by providing training and employment opportunities through projects designed to create micro-enterprises in sustainable technology. The documentary was made by a Dutch family donating their time and skills to increase awareness for the founder of FoST Sanu Kaji Shrestha and all the dedicated volunteers working at FoST. Sustainability: An Advanced Course - Cleanlink

Watch the entire webcast here: www.cleanlink.com Years ago, businesses looking to standout could do so by adopting — and promoting — a pro-green status. Today, however, there is an emphasis on the broader concept of sustainability — a philosophy that seeks to minimize environmental impact, maximize the "triple bottom line" of profits, people and the planet, and find ways to save energy, water and other precious resources. So how does an organization make the transition from 'green' to truly sustainable? This webcast will detail strategies for moving toward a holistic, top-down sustainable strategy that can benefit a company's internal practices as well as its bottom line. The Webcast will detail: * Creating a sustainable culture within an organization * Tools for improving sustainable performance, establishing benchmarks and reducing waste * Key strategies to reduce water consumption, increase energy efficiency and decrease a company's carbon footprint * How jan/san distributors, building service contractors and in-house executives can effectively establish themselves as a sustainable operation

Green, Beautiful & in Control - Not Just an Eco House w/ Sustainable Architecture

www.control4.com - We're here in Silicon Valley, home to countless Hi-Tech inventions, so it's no surprise that we found a house here that is so cutting edge, so environmentally friendly that some people are calling it, "The World's Greenest Home"... and wouldn't you know it, a Control4 system keeps the whole house humming. Check it out! Linda Yates (Home Owner) - "This is actually the property that I grew up on. My parents bought the property in 1967 so we've been here ever since. We said, 'we really want to build the most sustainable, the most regenerative house in America.' So it's really just four basic materials... it's glass, it's steel, it's wood and it's stone. On the floor, 150-year-old barn wood... stone that wasn't actually good enough for somebody else but our guys were so into it that they went and took it out of the bone pile. The whole design of the house with all the roofs and the steel roof is to be able to catch all the rainwater and storm water and then reuse it. We're putting more green energy back on the grid than we are using. It's definitely the greenest custom home in America." "There's 3 myths we were trying to bust with green building: 1. Was that it was ugly... you had to build a concrete box with no windows. 2. That it was twice as expensive. 3. That you had to completely fundamentally change your lifestyle." ... and those are myths that we have to bust. The technology plays a big role in being able to do that." How to Be Green: 7 Easy, Sustainable, and Practical Tips for Living Environmentally Friendly

www.ampli.com blog.ampli.com Green living is about finding a lifestyle which causes no permanent damage to the planet. It's about living in harmony and balance with other living inhabitants of our world. Going green these days may be easier and less expensive than one might think. There are many ways to "live green" but here are some easy and inexpensive tips you might find useful: - Recycle: The old standard still works. This is a painless and easy way to help the planet. A glass bottle, for example, is said to take 4000 years to decompose and blend back into the environment. By recycling we eliminate this process completely. - Use your Dishwasher: Surprisingly, research has shown that using your dishwasher instead of washing your dishes by hand saves energy. A dishwasher uses less water than you would if you washed everything by hand. You should stay away from pre-washing your dishes in the sink, set your dishwasher on the lowest heat level, and avoid using the rinse function and automatic air dry. It may take a little longer to dry but costs you nothing and saves energy. - Shut Down and Unplug Electronics: Turn off your computer when it's not in use and use power strips for phones and other electronics so you can turn them all off easily. Making small changes like these in your life will reduce your energy bill. - Tree-Free Home: Eliminate unwanted trash and save money by investing in cloth napkins. Replace paper towels with cloth towels or napkins, read books ...

Living Mulch Sustainable Farming near Missoula

www.permies.com Helen Atthowe, Missoula County Horticulturist (1995-2010) http speaks about a variety of experiments with living mulch. She covers minimum till, no till and full till. Helen talks about creating beneficial insect habitats: bees, parasitic wasps, (in april she was experiencing a 1-to-1 ratio of parasitized aphids to non parasitized aphids), spiders, ground beetles ... Broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage yields are explored. Using three foot wide raised beds. The minimum till was done with a single shank chisel plow followed by a light tilling with a tiller/rotovator. Living mulches experimented with include clover which contributes nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but also competes with the production crop. The trick is to find the balance and get the best of all worlds. Music by Jimmy Pardo

Helen is well known in the Missoula area, not just as the Missoula county extension agent, but also as one of the most popular vendors at the Missoula farmers Market Missoula Saturday market. "The goal of our conservation farming is to increase farm profitability by decreasing labor and land requirements while striving to mimic the ecological principles that make native plant systems sustainable. The ecological principles we hope to mimic include reduced tillalge, increase species and genetic diversity, closed nutrient cycles, and creation of more diverse habitat. We look at our farm from a landscape or watershed level and hope to reconnect wild areas, agriculture and urban areas. Conservation agriculture is both biologically and socially a local agriculture." "We're trying to develop an agriculture system, in this case a vegetable production system, that sponsors its own fertility." Biological pest management: ".. mimic from a natural system is to sponsor our own pest control." "We're creating habitat for beneficial insects, parasites and predators ..." The Importance of Technology in Sustainable Resource Management

The demand of water has increased tremendously with the World's population escalating coupled with industrialization and urbanization; this also led to more wastewater generated. As the global water situation deteriorates, one-third of the World's population is facing problems due to both water shortage and poor drinking water quality. Singapore International Water Week speaks with Mr. Jonathan Clement, the Director of Technology Application for PWN Technologies who shares that the future of technological solutions lies in maximising water resources in a more economic and environmentally friendly way. Mr. Jonathan Clement is also the moderator of the Water Convention Hot Issues Workshop 2 -- Application of Technologies in Developing Countries. Exhibitors and trade visitors may register to attend at a nominal fee of S$ 100. Register today at www.siww.com.sg to gain more insights on urban water solutions.
