Let's Rock - Barrett Strong - Tamla Records MT 54022 (1959) Original recording from 45.

After many years I finally got one! Probably the rarest "issued" Motown related 45. Obviously there are acetates, demo's etc that never got to publishing and therefore are rarer, but this is a bit like the holy grail for us Motown stripes collectors. Don't ask about cost, if you are asking you probably can't afford it .. but I am very pleased to have it now (even if I did have to part with some rare 45's to pay for it) Barrett Strong was only a boy at school when he laid this down, so Berry Gordy took the credits, it was recorded in the basement of a small local radio show as Tamla didn't yet have a studio. It's said that this 45 was the catalist in making Gordy form Motown Records. It's going to be in my "Motown stripes playlist" from now on!

The Beatles - Money (That's What I Want)

1963 www.amazon.com Watch more: lifeofthebeatles.blogspot.com "Money (That's What I Want)" is a 1959 hit single by Barrett Strong for the Tamla label, distributed nationally on Anna Records. The song was written by Tamla founder Berry Gordy and Janie Bradford, and became the first hit record for Gordy's Motown enterprise. Anna Records was operated by Gwen Gordy, Anna Gordy and Billy 'Roquel' Davis. Gwen and Anna's brother Berry Gordy had just established his Tamla label (soon Motown would follow), and licensed the song to the Anna label in 1960,which was distributed nationwide by Chicago-based Chess Records in order to meet demand; the Tamla record was a resounding success in the Midwest. The song features Strong curtly demanding that money is what he needs, more than anything else. The single became Motown's first hit in June, 1960, making it to #2 on the US R&B chart and #23 on the US pop chart. The song has been covered by myriad artists, including Buddy Guy, The Beatles, Roy Orbison, The Searchers, John Lennon during his solo career, The Trashmen, The Kingsmen (US pop #16), The Rolling Stones, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Who, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Ike & Tina Turner, The Babys, Bern Elliott and the Fenmen, Pearl Jam, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Flying Lizards (in the UK this is probably the best known version of the song, as it peaked at #5 in the singles chart in 1979), Shonen Knife, The Stooges,The Pretenders, Scissor Sisters, Secret Machines, The Sonics, The Smashing ...
