In August 2011, after watching her grandkids tarp surfing Lilly decided she had had enough sitting on the sidelines and thought she'd give it a go. We towed her into a couple of overhead barrels, at the same time launching her into the record books as the oldest person to ever tarp surf in the world.

There were lots of discussions on some of the forums about having a stove in a tent, how safe it was and how portable it was. I rarely use a tent and I had a hanging grill that I wanted to use in an inclosed tarp during cold or wet weather. I had tossed around several designs but came up blank until I found out about Flexible Carbon Fiber blankets. Carbon Fiber blanket was $82.23. Stainless steel strapping was $47.50. It was very very hard to assemble this, I needed six hands. After this initial test I can tell this is going to be fantastic for in shelter cold weather trips.

This is what I call the "Gar Tarp." I made it because I wanted something cheap, fast, versatile, packs small and would keep me warm and out of the weather. This is the system I use now. This is only one configuration of the tarp. Most of the other configurations are well known. This method can be done anywhere and doesn't need trees or cordage. The other reason I like it is because it has a floor, roof AND sides and an opening for the warmth of the campfire. The stakes and poles can easily be replaced with sticks found lying around.

Here is a tutorial for adding bonded pullouts to your silnylon tarp, no sewing required. I'm adding four pullouts to my Cooke Custom Sewing 8x10 Tundra Tarp. DISCLAIMER: I have never tried this before nor have I read about anyone else doing this, so I can't comment on how well these pullouts will perform. But my initial tests have been very promising. I've put a fair amount of tension on them and they don't show any signs of separation. I'll follow up after I've done some actual field tests and report back on how they are holding up after enduring several trips and storms.

It is heavier than a similar sized silicon nylon tarp, but far stronger. The DPM pattern blends in well to woodland settings and makes an excellent low-profile camp.

Homemade hammock camping tarp made from ripstop nylon designed to be primarily as a tarp but also capable of being folded and tied into a gathered end hammock. I started with seven (7) yards of 60 inch wide ripstop nylon from JoAnn fabrics. I cut the fabric into two 3.5 yard pieces and used a flat seam (felled seam I believe) to join the pieces into a tarp of approximately 10 foot by 10 foot finished. The hem is a simple single fold hem performed twice completely around the entire tarp. I used some remnant pieces of ripstop to make the tie-off points, the tie-offs being tube sewn to allow for 6 layers of thickness. Total weight, including six short 550 cord ties and a 30' piece of Amsteel 7/64 in just under 2 pound according to my kitchen scale.

Considering I have searched the internet high and low and have not found this shelter, I call dibs. It is called the Poncho Bivy Shelter. It is a great lightweight emergency shelter. It even has a floor. The reason I like this shelter is a poncho/tarp is a versatile tool. The poncho is rain gear, and is even large enough in many cases to cover your backpack as well. But the tarp can be used as a backup rain cover for a tent, a ground cover, a main overhead covering in an emergency situation. The uses are almost limitless. This shelter can be made from any tarp. The poncho/tarp shown here is amilitary poncho from the 80's. It is "wet weather coated" (rubberized), 64in x 84in as a tarp, button snaps down the side, and has eight(8) grommets. The number of grommets is an important factor. Some of the newer "poncho/tarps" made by Rothco, and Atlantco, are 52in x 82in and only have four(4) or six(6) grommets. But even the newer ponchos can be used, they are just a bit tighter than the old military ones. I would suggest adding the extra grommets into them though. I did this to my Rothco and it works almost as well as my military poncho. Just a little smaller. If you don't want to fool with putting in grommets, you can buy a couple of the "tarp gator" clips that you can find just about anywhere where tarps are sold. I recommend at least one to go with your tarp just in case a grommet fails. Any tarp size will work but anything larger than a 5ft x 7ft is wasted coverage. There are <b>...</b>

In 1981, the 35-year-old Stockman gave up his Michigan seat in Congress to become Reagan's budget director.
