Tar Sands Oil Extraction - The Dirty Truth

Environmental devastation of the land, water, and air - the largest industrial energy project in the world is extracting crude oil from bitumen found beneath the pristine boreal forest of Alberta, Canada. Effecting a land mass equivalent in size to Florida or England, Both industry and government are putting money before the health and security of its people and the environment. Tar sands take 3 barrels of water to process every barrel of oil extracted. Ninety percent of this water becomes so toxic that it must be stored in tailing ponds. Unfortunately these ponds regularly leach pollution into the third largest watershed in the world. Water depletion, exploitation, privatization and contamination has become one of the most important issues facing humanity this century. The true cost of oil: Garth Lenz @ TEDxVictoria

What does environmental devastation actually look like? At TEDxVictoria, photographer Garth Lenz shares shocking photos of the Alberta Tar Sands mining project -- and the beautiful (and vital) ecosystems under threat. For almost twenty years, Garth's photography of threatened wilderness regions, devastation, and the impacts on indigenous peoples, has appeared in the world's leading publications. His recent images from the boreal region of Canada have helped lead to significant victories and large new protected areas in the Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Ontario. Garth's major touring exhibit on the Tar Sands premiered on Los Angeles in 2011 and recently appeared in New York. Many pipelines transport this dirty oil all around North America, and our exports make us the United States' biggest provider of oil. In the last few years, a new extension to a current pipeline has been proposed to carry Tar Sands oil all the way to Texas, putting some of North America's most fragile ecosystems and waterways in serious peril. Indigenous Activists From Canada Protest Tar Sands Oil at Durban Climate Change Summit

DemocracyNow.org - This morning in Durban, South Africa, a group of youth and indigenous activists from Canada gave delegates to the UN Climate Change Conference mock gift bags containing samples of fake tar sands along with tourism brochures for Canada and Canadian flags. Kandi Mossett, one of the activists participating in the action, says Canada's reliance on tar sands oil "is the largest catastrophic project that I am aware of on earth right now." Mossett, who is the Native Energy and Climate Campaign Organizer for the Indigenous Environmental Network, notes that the tar sands extraction process is energy and water-intensive, emits immense amounts of pollution into the air, and destroys the landscape. "To even get to the tar sands they have to remove boreal forests — old growth forests — and they call it 'overburden.' They just scrape it off and get rid of that. And then they dig down and move so many tons of earth," Mossett tells Democracy Now!, "Then they squeeze out the last little 10 percent of oil that's actually in the sand. And then they have to use chemicals to make it liquid enough to be able to put it through the pipelines — it's much more toxic than any other kind of, you know, sweet crude oil." Drew Rouse's Song "The Tar Sands Boogie" aka "Oh Canuckistan" ".

More info at: www.drewrouse.com A video of Drew Rouse's song "The Tar Sands Boogie" aka "Oh Canuckistan". It is a song about the unbelievable environmental disaster known as the Canadian tar sands. Remember Canada doesn't have oil... Canada has toxic and dirty tar sand! The oil they extract from this tar sand is the dirtiest oil on Earth and it uses tons of fresh water which is then put into massive holding ponds. This water is so poisonous that if ducks or geese land on it, they die within hours. These toxic ponds are filled with numerous toxins and these mega, multinational oil corporations have no long term plan for their clean up. It destroys huge areas of pristine forest. It adds to Global Warming and destroys huge areas of wildlife habitat in the carbon absorbing Boreal forest. The tar sands are to blame for poisoning the First Nation peoples food and water supplies, thus them (the Beaver Lake Cree) These toxins go on to poison other denizens of the otherwise pristine northern forests. Please help us STOP the Canadian tar sands nightmare. Our children and grandchildren are depending on us! Its time to switch from the old, toxic and tired oil, coal and "natural"gas paradigm to the Clean, Green, responsible and renewable... energy paradigm. Plus, more energy conservation and start using the new technologies that could cut our energy/oil consumption down considerably. The oil paradigm is destroying our planet, we must go towards energy diversity and shut down the ...

Tar Sands Pollution - The Scientific Evidence

the alberta government has always maintained that toxins found in the athabasca river are "naturally occurring", with industry not compounding the problem. the position that they take is not surprising, given the amount of money these multinational oil companies generate, and the liability potential should they be forced to pay for damages. this video is from the documentary, tipping point, narrated by dr. david suzuki. it shows scientific evidence to counter the government's position. watch the full 90 minute documentary here: www.cbc.ca dr. david schindler and his team sampled an area around the mines in winter. the pollution that ends up in the snow can only get there from above, from smokestacks and dust from the mines. within a fifty km radius, the study found 11400 metric tonnes of particulate deposited during only 4 months of snowfall. 64% of that was bitumen! if this amount of pollutant was released in a single pulse, it would amount to a major oil spill every year! but because it is released "gradually" over time, it does not receive the attention that it should. it's the same with dead birds in tailings ponds. in march of 2009, over 1600 birds were found dead in syncrude's toxic pond. however, each year anywhere from around 500-5000 birds are found dead in these poisonous pools. but once again, because it happens over the course of a year, it does not receive the same kind of media attention as when many birds die at one time. these are merely two examples of ...

Tar Sands in Alberta

Please visit www.climate-change-guide.com for more information on Canada's oil sands. Tar Sands in Alberta is Canada's worst environmental disaster. Please share this video with your friends and family in order to help spread the word. Together we can make a difference, together we can stop the destruction. Soundtrack: Adagio for Strings by Boston Symphony Facts: It covers an area the size of england: APRIL 2011 UPDATE: Total area= 140200 km squared, or 54132 square miles. Currently, this is actually larger than the size of England (it's about the size of England and Wales combined). Oil from the tar sands is one of the world's most carbon-intensive fuels Two tonnes of tar sand produces a single barrel of oil. The tar sands generate 40 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, more than every car in Canada combined. The oil itself is bitumen which contains cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To reach the bitumen, the Boreal Forest is destroyed. Because of the tar sands, Canada's greenhouse gas emissions have grown more since 1990 than those of any other G8 nation. Important waterways like the Athabasca River are being contaminated by 11 million litres of toxic waste every day. Because of the Canada oil sands, the air is polluted with dangerous toxins, poisoning communities with rare cancers and autoimmune diseases. It destroys critical animal habitats and some of Canada's most pristine landscapes. Unfortunately, the Alberta government has approved every ...

The Canadian Tar Sands is the world's largest, and dirtiest, energy project. Dirty oil sands crude generates as much as five times greenhouse gas as conventional oil. The demonstrators have taken to using what they call the "human microphone"—speakers address the crowd in short phrases which are then repeated across the crowd as many times as is necessary for all in attendance to hear what's being said. The pipeline he refers to, right at the beginning, is the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, currently in the final review phase by the State Department.
