Gilda Huntington Ward recounted her family history as a descendant of Samuel Huntington, one of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. How appropriate a descendant of a Signer would attend a modern Tea Party. This was more than just a coincidence. In 1788 he presided over the Connecticut Convention that was called to ratify the United States Constitution. In later years he saw the transition of Connecticut into a US State. He resolved the issue of a permanent state capital at Hartford and oversaw the construction of the state house. He died while in office, at his home in Norwich on January 5, 1796. His tomb is located down Old Cemetery Lane adjacent to the Norwichtown Green and its inscription is in excellent condition.

Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that the Tea Party movement is "struggling to overcome accusations of racism," some of which has been perpetuated in its editorial pages. Yesterday's New York Times, home to the most obsessively anti-Tea Party editorial page in America, was stunned to discover that "at least 32 African-Americans are running for Congress this year as Republicans, the biggest surge since Reconstruction, according to party officials." Are the Tea Party protesters a small group of radical freakazoids or a large crew of taxpaying regular joes who are fed up with government spending, Democrats and Republicans, and business as usual? Reason.tv fanned out through the crowd and the backstage of the September 12 Taxpayer March on Washington, the controversial anti-government protest that drew somewhere between 75000 and 1 million people, according to press reports. We talked with folks from all over the country and snagged interviews with speakers and media including Sen. Jim DeMint (RS.C.), Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), CNN's Jeff Greenfield, actor Steven Baldwin, FreedomWorks' Matt Kibbe, and many more. What we found was a group of people united in their calls for less government spending and their disgust at the Republican and Democratic pols who made it all happen. On March 21, 2010 the House of Representatives passed a historic health care bill, and of course conservatives always need to be on the wrong side of history. To that end, they held one of their infamous "Tea Parties" outside the US Capitol, which was complete with its usual racist and homophobic shots at the opposition. This was shot the day after some members of Congress were hit with such things, and on the same day 500000 people, many of them Hispanic, were also on the National Mall pushing for immigration reform.
