CGRundertow BONK'S ADVENTURE for TurboGrafx-16 / TG-16 Video Game Review

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Bonk's Adventure for the TurboGrafx-16, developed by Red Company & Atlus, and published by NEC. Everyone's favorite caveboy with a gigantic head made his video game debut with the release of this colorful and cartoony 2d platformer, as Bonk would become a major mascot for the TurboGrafx-16 console. Set in prehistoric times, you'll use your head to bash your way through a quest to save Princess Za from the evil T-Rex known as King Drool. Unique gameplay and a charming style definitely makes this a landmark game for the system, even if it couldn't quite sell as well as Mario and Sonic. This review features Bonk's Adventure gameplay footage and commentary from CGRundertow reviewer Kevin.

The Legendary Axe (TG16)

This game is Legendary! Developed by Victor Interactive Software and originally released in Japan for the PC Engine in 1988. The Legendary Axe was brought to North America a year later as a launch title for the TurboGrafx-16 in 1989 and went on to win Game of the Year from both EGM and VideoGames & Computer Entertainment magazines. But really how many people actually owned the TG16 in 1989? Because of that I guess most of us missed out on one of the best games that year. But luckily it's pretty cheap to pickup today. So let's check it out.

CGRundertow PAC-LAND for TurboGrafx-16 / TG-16 Video Game Review

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Pac-Land for the TurboGrafx-16, from Namco. Released to arcades in 1984, the iconic Pac-Man would bust out of the maze and into a sidescrolling world where he must run and jump through various stages and avoid those pesky ghosts, not unlike some of the future games in the Pac-Man World series. This port for the TurboGrafx-16 is one of the home versions that is quite faithful to the innovative arcade original. This review features Pac-Land gameplay footage and commentary from CGRundertow reviewer Kevin.

CGRundertow CADASH for TurboGrafx-16 / TG-16 Video Game Review

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Cadash for the TurboGrafx-16, developed by Taito, and localized by Working Designs. Originally released in arcades in 1989, Cadash was one of the earlier hybrids of platformers and RPGs, with some difficult hack and slash gameplay. This port for the TurboGrafx-16 is fairly similar to the arcade version, except for it being even more difficult due to its lack of a continue feature. But you still dungeon crawl your way through the game as a fighter, mage, priest, or ninja. Just watch out for that black pudding! This review features Cadash gameplay footage and commentary from CGRundertow reviewer Kevin. Check out more reviews from Classic Game Room at www.YouTube.com www.YouTube.com and www.YouTube.com

Let's Play Cadash (TG16) #01 - Pudding Popped

An arcade classic, ported to the Turbografx, and the Sega Genesis as well. Here's the differences of the four characters: - Fighter is more close range, but is a tank, can't use magic. - Mage is weak, but has lots of offensive spells, and can use more by gaining levels. - Priestess has healing spells, and a flail that can attack twice. - Ninja has ranged weapons, no magic, and takes longer to gain levels. Game made by Taito.

Side Arms Hyper Dyne Review (TG-16)

Originally released in arcades in 1986 by Capcom and later ported to the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 in 1989 (as well as a variety of other home machines), Side Arms Hyper Dyne is a shooter (or shmup, if you prefer) along the lines of two other Capcom shooters, Section Z and Forgotten Worlds. This is a fantastic shooter for the TG-16. Great 16-bit graphics and music, and a wide variety of power ups, which are essential to a good shooter in my opinion! A nice touch is the ability to shoot forward or backward using the TG-16's two face buttons. The game can get pretty devious with this mechanic, and although it starts off quite pleasant, it quickly becomes quite challenging. At this time, Side Arms is not available for the Wii's Virtual Console, but if you have a TG-16, or even any of the other classic computers it's available for (including the Commodore 64, Amiga and ZX Spectrum), I'd highly recommend checking out this little gem. Side Arms Hyper Dyne was reviewed using the Turbografx-16 version.

As some of you may know GINGE was released for the GPH CAANOO a few days ago. What this means is that CAANOO owners can play a lot of the WIZ and GP2X games on their systems now. As soon as this was released I thought....I wonder if GINGE works with TV OUT...As you can see it does!!!!. Here is a video of the wonderful emulator TEMPER running my TG16 CD favorites and a short clip of everyone's favorite CAVE STORY! Sorry about the fuzzy camera and focus issues. I was doing this in a completely dark room while my wife was sleeping. I will do a better video on Thursday with some more gameplay and reviews of some of the GP2X, WIZ, and CAANOO emulators.

Gradius II HD Intro PCE/TG-16 CD

The intro for Gradius II for the PCE/TG-16 Taken from (wikipedia) Today, the TurboGrafx-16 is mainly known for its much-vaunted shoot 'em ups and the Ys & Bonk games. After the system died, NEC decided to concentrate on the Japanese market, where it has had much more success. In 1994, NEC released a new console, the Japan-only PC-FX, a 32-bit system with a tower-like design; it enjoyed a small but steady stream of games until 1998, when NEC finally abandoned the video games industry. NEC would then partner with former rival Sega, providing a version of its PowerVR 2 Chipset for the Dreamcast. There is a niche collector's market for TurboGrafx games and Japanese imports, mainly centered around the system's many arcade ports of shooters. Spurring this interest is the fact that Turbo ports from the arcade tended to be closer to the original than Sega Genesis, Super NES, or NES versions, in terms of graphics and sound. (Don't know what they are talking about Gradius II wasn't released on the SNES or Gen Air Buster better on the Gen Golden Axe better on the Gen Altered Beast better on the Genesis and Gate of Thunder was only released for the TG16 Gradius III was onlt released on the Snes Gradius II was better on the TG16 vs the Nes) Hudson Soft also released some shooters which were exclusive to the Turbo, such as Super Air Zonk: Rockabilly-Paradise, Gate of Thunder, Soldier Blade, Super Star Soldier, Star Parodia (Japan). Aero Blasters HD Stage 1 PCE/TG-16

Another great shmup Game that features great graphics and sound. Although not as good as the Genesis version I spent many hours playing this game as a kid as well. (wikipedia) Although touted and marketed at the time as a next generation "16-bit" console, the TurboGrafx-16 was, in fact, built around an 8-bit microprocessor as its CPU. While its CPU was of the previous 8-bit generation, the overall speed of the hardware was somewhat comparable to contemporary 16-bit machines. Sometimes criticized as an inaccurate gauge of overall speed, NEC touted the TurboGrafx-16 as having a higher MIPS rating than both the Genesis and Super NES. While true, drawing direct comparisons between the TurboGrafx-16, Genesis, and Super NES CPUs is difficult due to differences in architecture, bit bandwidth, speed measurements in MHz/MIPS, and the way those measurements are related to overall speed due to said architectural differences. Any attempt to make direct comparisons should generally be considered highly dubious. The reality was that there were many things the Genesis and Super NES CPUs did better from a programming standpoint than the TurboGrafx-16 CPU and vice versa. NEC's marketing department played on the fact that the TurboGrafx-16 was designed with a dual 16-bit graphics chipset, and chose to view it as a hybrid system. This proved to be a bit of a marketing gaffe, and backfired on NEC in the North American market somewhat as more and more people learned the TurboGrafx-16 was, in ...

CGRundertow KEITH COURAGE IN ALPHA ZONES for TurboGrafx-16 / TG-16 Video Game Review

Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow video game review of Keith Courage in Alpha Zones for the TurboGrafx-16, developed by Hudson Soft. Released as the original pack-in game for the console's launch, this platformer stars Keith Courage in a sidescrolling adventure to save the planet. The gameplay switches between two styles, one controlling Keith in human form in overworld areas, and the second half of the levels send you underground in the robotic Nova Suit. You'll hack and slash through a variety of strange enemies and ride plenty of rainbows in this quirky and obscure cult classic. Keith Courage (TG16)

Keith Courage was the pack in title for the Turbo Grafx 16 when it launched in 1989 but it's actually based on a PCE game that was released a year earlier in Japan. I have fond memories of this game as a kid but truth is it's very repetitive. It's an average game but it's nothing spectacular. Many TG16 fans would argue there were better titles available at launch that would have made a better pack in.
