In 1979, Bob Hope hosted the first in a series of military-themed TV specials that would celebrate his birthday. Produced by James Lipton ("Live From the Actors Studio") this show would be followed in 1980 by a show from the Air Force Academy; in 1981 we'd go to West Point; and in 1982 to Annapolis. This show was taped aboard the USS Iwo Jima, docked in New York Harbor and would have several memorable guest appearances by the Village People and Sarah Jessica Parker, then 14-years old and starring in "Annie" on Broadway. She has played the clip several times on Letterman. Also guesting are Diahann Carroll, Don Knotts, and Charo. You can read all about the how Hope worked with his guests and his writers and what happened behind-the- scenes of these classic Bob Hope video clips by reading my book "THE LAUGH MAKERS: A Behind-the- Scenes Tribute to Bob Hope's Incredible Gag Writers." Says "laugh-In's" Gary Owens: "The Laugh Makers is the book we've all been waiting for. It's jam-packed with stories, anecdotes and un- retouched photos from a fondly remembered past, recalling often hilarious, sometimes heartwarming, and always touching tales of legendary stars, near- legendary stars and one or two complete failures — which happens in show business. You can look it up in your Funk & Wagnalls."
