Boulder World Cup 2011 report - Munich

The IFSC Bouldering World Cup closed last Saturday with the event in Munich, Germany. The competition awarded the World Cup titles to the Austrians Anna Stöhr -- winner of the World Championship in Arco -- and to Kilian Fischhuber, although neither of them stepped up for the first place in Munich. In the women's field, the Slovenian Mina Markovic gains the gold medal with 3 tops 3 out of 4; the home athlete Juliane Wurm, galvanized by her public, sends one boulder more than Anna Stöhr and thus gets the silver medal, with Stohr in third place. The Russian Dmitry Sharafutdinov, World Champion in Arco, shows again his great shape with four boulders climbed on first attempt; but most impressive is the fact that only Russian athletes are on the podium at the last bouldering competition of the year: Rustam Gelmanov is second, and Alexey Rubtsov is third.

It's Kilian and Akiyo, once again. At the new outdoor venue - in the square designed by Massimiliano Fuksass - Kilian Fischhuber (AUT) beat Daniel Woods (USA) by 2 attempts to send all boulders in the final round, while the French François Kaiser steps in third place with 3 problems completed. In the women's field, Akiyo Noguchi, from Japan, claims back the first place by sending the four final boulders by the routesetter Jamie Cassidy in 6 attempts, against Anna Stöhr's 8 attempts. Melissa Le Neve (FRA) got the bronze medal with 3 tops out of 4. Fischhuber is now leading the World Cup Ranking 2011 with 409 points, while Dmitry Sharafutdinov follows at 366; despite Noguchi's victory, Stöhr is still at the top of the women's ranking for 2011 with 540 points, against Noguchi's 429.

Astana@UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2011/12 presented by SAMSUNG

GERMANY WINS THE FIRST ROUND In the end, with eight medals -- one gold, two silver and five bronze -- won by its riders during the three days of the competition, Germany won the first round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup 2011-2012, presented by Samsung. In spite of their three wins, the Australians had to concede 29 points to the Germans in the Team ranking of the event which sees France, as current trophy holder, finish in third place. Yet, the last meeting had begun very well for the "Cyclones", winners of the Madison with Alexander Edmondson and Glenn Oshea -- who had already won the Individual Pursuit the day before -- in front of Switzerland and the Russians of the Lokosphinx team, after a rather eventful race. However, all the spectators present in the velodrome at Astana were eagerly waiting the moment to experience the emotions of the last two Sprint contests which remained to be fought out. Most people's attention was focused on Chris Hoy, who was seeking to take his revenge after his defeat in Keirin. The performance certainly kept its promises, with the Brit beating the German Robert Forstemann in the semi-final and the Russian Denis Dmitriev in the final. For the several times World Champion and Olympic Champion, currently striving for the best possible physical condition following some difficulties which had troubled him during these last few weeks, this victory at Astana represents a very important step forward on the long road that will take him first ...

Round five of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano for cross-country saw both the men's and women's World Cup leaders increase their leads in the overall standings by taking their third wins of the season in Windham, New York. A classic battle was waged in the women's race between World Cup Series Leader Julie Bresset (BH - Suntour - Peisey Vallandry) and round four winner Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team). They had attained a 40 second gap over the rest of the field by the end of the first of five laps and never looked back. The duo rode together for the rest of the race with victory coming down to the climb on the last lap. Bresset had the better attack and came over the top in the lead, while Pendrel had some mechanical problems on the descent. Bresset's winning time was 1:35:36, with Pendrel claiming second, 39 seconds back. "I'm very happy with my win," commented Bresset. "Catharine was very fast today. I attacked at the right time and she couldn't follow me. Catharine was more comfortable on the downhills than I was, and she attacked me many times, but I still had enough strength left to launch the final attack." Annika Langvad (Team Easton Rockets) outsprinted Marie-Helene Premont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) for thrd, with Georgia Golud (Luna) taking fifth. Bresset leads the points standings with 1110. Pendrel remains in second with 920. Bresset seems to have a lock on the series title unless she has some disastrous finishes in the remaining two races ...

Final bet: Oracle Paul the Octopus picks Spain over Netherlands to win World Cup

It's Spain! Oracle Paul the Psychic Octopus predicts Spain will beat Holland and win the World Cup. The world-famous octopus could be seen sitting on a tank marked with a Spanish flag for only a few minutes before grabbing out a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday's final match in the World Cup. Paul correctly predicted Germany's wins over Argentina, England, Australia and Ghana and the country's loss to Spain and Serbia.

1978 World Cup: Italy vs Brazil (Part 1)

Third place matches are seldom worth watching, but the bronze match of the 1978 World Cup in Argentina is one of the great exceptions. In fact, it is one of the best matches of that sublime tournament. Italy had been playing beautiful football from their first match where they beat the strong French, then demolished Hungary and a 67th minute goal by the great Roberto Bettega saw off hosts Argentina to top Group 1. A goal-less yet thrilling draw with West Germany in Group A of the Second Round and a 1-0 win over Austria left Italy needing to beat the mighty and skillful Dutch and they came close, but Arie Haan's now-legendary 42-yard shot ended the 40-year hopes of the Azzurri winning their third World Cup, but Spain '82 was beckoning! Brazil had gotten off to a sluggish start, drawing with an improving Spanish side and the robust Swedes. Roberto Dinamite's 40th minute goal against the excellent Austrians saved them from an embarrassing early exit. Once in Group B of the Second Round, they dramatically improved with a skillful 3-0 win over the equally skillful Peru. A goal-less encounter with Argentina and a classy 3-1 win over a fine Polish side meant that the hosts needed to beat Peru by four goals, which the did to much controversy. And so, with two very polished sides narrowly squeezed out, the stage was set in the Estadio José Amalfitani in Buenos Aires with 70000 in attendance (a staggering figure for a Bronze match) between the two great rivals of Europe and Latin ...

Igorrre@UCI Cyclo Cross World Cup 2011/12

Highlights from the 4th leg of the 2011/12 Patrick UCI Cyclo Cross World Cup in Igorre / Spain Super-consistent Kevin Pauwels (Sunweb -- Revor) captured his second World Cup victory of the season in Igorre, Spain, during the fourth round of the 2011-2012 Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup. Pauwels strengthens his overall lead in the Elite Men category of the World Cup in front of Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) who was runner-up in the Basque Country. Young rider Tom Meeusen (Telenet -- Fidea) completed the Belgian podium on Sunday. The first laps on the more or less dry course in cloudy Igorre were dominated by Belgian rider Rob Peeters (Telenet -- Fidea), Italian rider Enrico Franzoi (Selle Italia Guerciotti) and Czech rider Radomir Simunek (BKCP -- Powerplus). However, while the three early leaders searched for their second breath, Sven Nys hammered through. During the third lap he blew the front of the race apart and gathered a lead of 13s on the main chase group, which included World Cup leader Pauwels. Although Pauwels could not immediately find the space to close the gap, he moved up a gear a lap later, with reigning World Champion Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep Cycling Team) on his wheel. Pauwels bridged up to Nys in half a lap, but Stybar (CZE) lost touch with Pauwels, failing to close the final gap on the Belgian duo in front. The two leaders checked each other out for two laps until bad luck struck Nys: a flat tire on the long and steep uphill section of the Spanish course ...

World Cup 1978 Italy vs Brazil - 2nd half

Italy-Brazil 1-2 (Causio 38', Nelinho 64', Dirceu 71') Italy: Zoff - Cuccureddu, Cabrini, Maldera, Gentile, Scirea - Causio, P. Sala, P. Rossi, Antognoni (78' C. Sala), Bettega. Ct: Bearzot. Brazil: Leão - Nelinho, Rodrigues Neto, Cerezo (64' Rivelino), Amaral, Oscar - Gil (46' Reinaldo), Jorge Mendoça, Roberto, Batista, Dirceu. Ct: Coutinho. This was World Cup 1978's game for the 3rd place, between the two teams most glorious World Cup nations. Both beleived that they deserved to be in the Final. Italy, because they had offered the most attractive and convincing football of the tournament. Brazil, because of Argentina's suspicious but decisive 6-0 win over Peru. Italy were missing Tardelli and Benetti through suspension, and Zaccarelli and Bellugi through injury. Decapitated from his whole midfield, Bearzot had to rely on Patrizio sala and Maldera (originally a full back), to support the returning Antognoni. The first half saw Italy create the most serious chances. With Paolo Rossi and Causio in great form, supported by the enthusiastic contributions of Cabrini and Bettega, Italy created many chances leading to Causio's strike in the 38th minute meeting a nice cross from Rossi. The goal was followed shortly by Causio hitting the bar and Rossi hitting the post. Like in their game against Holland in which they were holding a confident 1-0 lead at halftime also, Italy slowed down their pace in the second half. Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup: Compton and Nys take a win in Plzen 16.10.2011 US-champion Katherine Compton (Rabobank - Giant Off-road Team) and the Cyclo-cross legend from Belgium Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet-KDL) won the first round of the 2011-2012 Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in Plzen, Czech Republic. Tactical final In the Elite Men's category Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep Cycling Team) was in the lead going into the last stairway of the final lap just 23 steps before the final corners with Sven Nys and local contender Kevin Pauwels (Telenet Fidea) close on his heels. Nys made a tactical move immediately after the stairway slipping into a narrow gap between a tree and Stybar. It gave him an advantage for the final sprint and allowed him to take the World Cup victory in Plzen, his 44th World Cup win. Pauwels sprinted past a disappointed Stybar, who settled for third in front of his home crowd. Compton holds off Van Paassen and Nash British Champion Helen Wyman (Kona Factory Racing) showed her form, leading the pack from the outset in the Women's race on the slightly wet and very fast course in Plzen. However an acceleration from Compton during the second lap put Wyman in trouble. And from the third lap Compton kept extending her lead with home rider Katerina Nash (Luna Pro Team) battling with Sanne Van Paassen (Brainwash Wielerploeg) for second position. Lara Gut - Swiss World Cup alpine ski racer

Lara Gut (born April 27, 1991, in Sorengo, Ticino, Switzerland) is a World Cup alpine ski racer, competing in all five disciplines and specializing in downhill and super-G. In December 2006, at age 15, Gut (pronounced Goot) participated in her first FIS races. At the Alpine Youth World Championship 2007 at Altenmarkt, Austria, she won silver in downhill. In the same year, she became Swiss national champion in super-G, the second youngest champion of all time. In the 2007 season, Gut finished 2nd in the downhill standings of the Europa Cup. On December 28, 2007, Gut made her World Cup debut in a giant slalom at Lienz, Austria. In January 2008, at Caspoggio, she won four consecutive Europa Cup races. At her first World Cup downhill race on February 2, 2008, Gut made the podium at third place at St. Moritz, despite falling on the finishing pitch and sliding on her back through the finish line; she finished only 0.35 seconds behind the winner.[1] She followed her World Cup speed debut with a fifth place finish in the super-G the next day. Following the 2008 season, Gut was moved up to the World Cup team for the 2009 season. Early in her first full season, Gut won her first World Cup race on December 20, 2008, a Super-G in St. Moritz. She finished 0.63 seconds ahead of second place finisher Fabienne Suter. Gut became the youngest skier to win a World Cup Super G race, at 17.65 years (17 years, 237 days).

Young Tom Meeusen (Telenet-Fidea) and Katherine Compton (USA) dealt best with the cold weather and snow that was a major feature of the fifth round of the Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup in Kalmthout (BEL). After a tactical race, Meeusen won the sprint from Belgian Champion Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) and his compatriot Kevin Pauwels (Telenet-Fidea). Niels Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) remains in the lead of the overall World Cup standings. US Champion Compton showed great skills and held off a strong ride from Marianne Vos (Nederland Bloeit), netting her third World Cup victory of the season. The Czech Katerina Nash took third place in front of Sanne van Paassen (NED), whose fourth place was just enough to keep her ahead of Compton in the World Cup standings. Vincent Baestaens (BEL) in the Men Under 23 category and Laurens Sweeck (BEL) in the Juniors Men category pleased the home crowd earlier on Sunday. Both young Belgians strengthened their leads in the World Cup. Elite Men: Meeusen wins sprint Meeusen's surprise win in the Elite Men category comes in his first year as a professional rider. Meeusen opted to hide for most of the race in a lead group of six riders. World Cup leader Niels Albert (BCKP-Powerplus) was also present in this group but didn't make the cut when Nys accelerated with two laps to go; he eventually finished fifth. UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, downhill : Gwin recorded his fourth victory. The fifth round of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano in Windham, New York, concluded on Sunday with the fan-favourite Downhill. Rachel Atherton (Commencal) became the third woman to win a World Cup this season, while Aaron Gwin (Trek World Racing) recorded his fourth victory of the season before a wildly enthusiastic home crowd.
