First Electrical-Process Record -- Leopold Stokowski 1925

A landmark in the history of audio, this is the first orchestral performance recorded with the then newly developed electrical process-- using a microphone, amplifier, and electromagnetic cutting head. From Edison's invention of the phonograph, in 1877, until 1925, recordings were made acoustically, using megaphone-like large horns similar to the playback horn through which Nipper, the Victor trademark dog, is hearing His Master's Voice. The acoustic process relied solely on the physical energy of the voice or musical instruments for cutting the grooves; there were no volume knobs to adjust. While the acoustic process could yield pleasing sound-- my upload of the New York Philharmonic 1918 recording is an example of the process at its best-- its frequency range and dynamic range were extremely narrow. American Telephone & Telegraph's Bell Laboratories, having developed an equipment package for radio broadcasting that the Western Electric division marketed, developed a package for record companies that was adopted industry-wide through the latter half of the 1920s. Records made with the electrical process boasted much more natural sound, better defined bass-to-treble and soft-to-loud, which, for the first time, could be controlled while recording-- there was a volume knob. It can be argued that subsequent improvements in recording technique-- hifi, stereo, even digital-- are evolutionary advances; the electrical process was a revolutionary break with the past. However, the ...

Vaughan Williams "Tallis Fantasia" - Stokowski conducts

Stokowski made the first American LP of the "Tallis Fantasia" for RCA in 1952 with a specially selected band of New York string players, including such eminent soloists as William Lincer, viola, and Leonard Rose, cello. Stokowski's version was quite different to those by such conductors as Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Malcolm Sargent and Sir John Barbirolli, so don't expect a typically 'English' reading! But as it was one of the first recordings of the work to come out of the USA it has a certain historic interest. (Cala CACD0542).

John Barbirolli Born: 12/2/1899 - Holborn, London, England Died: 7/29/1970 - London, England Ralph Vaughan Williams (12 October 1872 -- 26 August 1958) Thomas Tallis, English composer (ca. 1505 - 1585) Ralph Vaughan Williams was born on 12 October 1872 in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, where his father, the Revd Arthur Vaughan Williams was vicar. Following his father's death in 1875 he was taken by his mother, Margaret Susan née Wedgwood, the great-granddaughter of the potter Josiah Wedgwood, to live with her family at Leith Hill Place. As a student he had studied piano, "which I never could play, and the violin, which was my musical salvation." After Charterhouse School he attended the Royal College of Music (RCM) under Charles Villiers Stanford. He read history and music at Trinity College, Cambridge, where his friends and contemporaries included the philosophers GE Moore and Bertrand Russell. One of his fellow pupils at the RCM was Leopold Stokowski and during 1896 they both studied organ under Sir Walter Parratt. Stokowski later went on to perform six of Vaughan Williams's symphonies for American audiences. Another friendship made at the RCM, crucial to Vaughan Williams's development as a composer, was with fellow-student Gustav Holst. He mixed composition with conducting, lecturing and editing other music, notably that of Henry Purcell and the English Hymnal. He had further lessons with Max Bruch in Berlin in 1897 and later took a big step forward in his orchestral ...

Morning Mood from Peer Gynt Suite

A request. Morning Mood from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite (No. 1) performed by Sir Thomas Beecham and the London Philharmonic in 1939. A common record but well played and recorded by Beecham. Beecham, along with Stokowski, was very sympathetic to the need to make adjustments for the recording process. As a result, their records are usually the best sounding of their time.

Beecham/LPO - Mozart Symph. #40 - 1st movement

A request. Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the London Philharmonic in a recording of the 1st movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (K550) for Columbia in 1937. Beecham had an affinity for Mozart who was not particularly popular before the War. This is considered the definitive early recording of this work. Beecham, along with Stokowski, was very accommodating to the needs of the recording process. As a result, as is evidenced here, his records are always among the best sounding of their time. Toscanini was just the opposite and most of his records suffer from substandard sound quality.

Fremde Heimat - Szenen

Charles Ives - Symphony n.4 - I. Prelude: Maestoso

Charles Ives - Symphony n.4 Michael Tilson-Thomas and Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus The Symphony No. 4, S. 4 (K. 1A4) by Charles Ives (1874 1954) was written between the years of 1910 and 1916. The symphony is notable for its multi-layered complexity - usually necessitating two conductors in performance - and for its over-sized orchestra. Combining elements and techniques of Ives's previous compositional work, this has been called "one of his most definitive works"; Ives' biographer, Jan Swafford has called it "Ives's climactic masterpiece." First movement This movement and the third movement were first performed in New York City on January 29, 1927. In contrast to Ives's other works for large orchestra, which begin in quiet and meditative moods, this symphony starts with a strong, maestoso, fortissimo bass line, immediately followed by a rising trumpet fanfare. A quiet passage follows. The movement ends with chorus singing the Epiphany hymn Watchman ("Watchman, tell us of the night.") Unlike the bold beginning, the movement dies away, quadruple-pianissimo, at the end. Second movement Ives bases this "Comedy" movement on Hawthorne's story The Celestial Railroad. It is possibly his most extreme essay in overlapping of multiple thematic material, found also in his Holidays Symphony. Tunes quoted include The Sweet By and By, Beulah Land, Marching Through Georgia, Ye Christian Heralds, Jesus, Lover of my Soul and Nearer, my God, to Thee. The complexity of this movement ...

A painter paints pictures on canvas. But musicians paint their pictures on silence. ~Leopold Stokowski Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach All deep things are song. It seems somehow the very central essence of us, song; as if all the rest were but wrappages and hulls! ~Thomas Carlyle If the King loves music, it is well with the land. ~Mencius Without music life would be a mistake. ~Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche Take a music bath once or twice a week for a few seasons. You will find it is to the soul what a water bath is to the body. ~Oliver Wendell Holmes If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. ~Gustav Mahler Why waste money on psychotherapy when you can listen to the B Minor Mass? Everyone have pain in his life..B minor is a sweat pain raaga... Fredrik Tuticorin.

The patchwork girl of Oz/partie 2 (1914) - Production Edison
