Rats of Tobruk - Libya - WW2 Second World War 1939 - 1945. The following information came from Wikipedia... The Rats of Tobruk was the name given to the soldiers of the garrison who held the Libyan port of Tobruk against the Afrika Corps, during the Siege of Tobruk in WW2 The siege started on 10 April 1941 and was finally relieved at the end of November. Australian troops of the Australian 9th Division and the 18th Brigade of the Australian 7th Division under Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead made up more than half of the Allied presence in Tobruk with a total strength of over 14000 men. The rest of the garrison was made up of 12000 British (the 3rd Armoured Brigade, 4 artillery regiments) and Indian (the 18th King Edward's Own Cavalry) troops. During the three moonless periods between August and October the Australian troops and Indian cavalry were withdrawn by sea and replaced by British 70th Infantry Division and the Polish Independent Carpathian Brigade with the Czechoslovak 11th Infantry Battalion under command. A special ANZAC Day ceremony was to have been held this year in the Libyan town of Tobruk, marking the 70th anniversary of the start of what was to become a key event in Australian military history. In April 1941, along with British and Indian troops, about 14000 Australian soldiers became besieged in Tobruk, surrounded by Italian and German forces desperate to win control of its harbour. Despite almost constant bombardment by artillery and from the air, the so-called "Rats of Tobruk" managed to hold on to the town until the siege was lifted in December. It was a significant military victory as the Second World War allies struggled to defend Egypt and the Suez Canal - forcing the enemy forces to bring supplies overland from the port of Tripoli, across 1500 kilometres of desert. But it came at a high cost - with more than 500 of the Australians killed, and hundreds more wounded. The special ANZAC Day ceremony was cancelled because of the fighting in Libya, with Tobruk currently under the control of rebel forces. Instead, the Rats of Tobruk who remain buried in Libya must be remembered from a distance ... by the dwindling number of their comrades who managed to come home - usually after further fighting, this time against Japanese forces in the Pacific. When German forces surrounded Tobruk, subjecting it to ground assaults, shelling and air raids, Australian soldiers took shelter underground. In this video i recreate an assault on the British held town of Tobruk 1942.. In this battle, Irwin Rommel thusts his infamous & seasoned "Afrika Korp" divisions at the well defended & entrenched British troops holding Tobruk.. The 1st wave of the assault is a German light armoured recon unit which serves as a diversion as they assail a regional HQ on the flanks of the town.. The 2nd wave consists of an Italian armoured brigade which hits the front gate of the defenses hard, easily overcoming the British forward garrison, however the advance of the Italians is grinded to a halt at the heavy defensive lines of the British.. Rommel then releases the main armoured spearhead of German Panzers along with some of the new Panzer IV's to break the bck of the English defenses.. After a rugged defense by the Britts, the spine of their defenses finally snaps. This leaves the road to Tobruk wide open for Rommels' advance.. It is June 1942 & General Erwin Rommel turns his assault on the British-Allied garrison at Tobruk, Libya, into victory, as his panzer division occupies the North African port. Britain had established control of Tobruk after routing the Italians in 1940. But the Germans attempted to win it back by reinforcing Italian troops with the Afrika Korps of Erwin Rommel, who continually charged the British Eighth Army in battles around Tobruk, finally forcing the Brits to retreat into Egypt. In February 2010, the Rats sold the house for 1.5 million dollars and donated the money to the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. The new owners agreed they can use the venue for meetings for as long as they like.
