I was on the 52nd floor of the Mori Tower in Roppongi Hills when the earthquake struck. You can get a sense of how much the tower was shaking from the curtains moving and the people screaming. The earthquake itself was scary, but the psychological fear of the tower collapsing etc was stronger. Well after the earthquake stopped, the building continued to sway back and forth. We ended up waiting about 1 1/2hrs for the lifts to start up again.

There's a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It's the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half. At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising. And thr threat from the monster waves goes all around the Pacific basin with strong aftershocks still being felt. Alerts have been put in place as far away as California all the way to Alaska.

The lines would be stopped for the whole day, traffic gridlocked, cell phones down so people queued to use payphones. Restaurants did great business for those waiting. The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including boats that topple over the wall and are smashed into a bridge. Cars were simply washed away, crashing into each other and buildings. More than 1400 people were killed by the quake and resulting tsunamis and hundreds more were still missing, according to officials, but police in one of the worst-hit areas estimated the number of dead there alone could eventually top 10000.

(STRONG LANGUAGE Warning) On March 11th, 2011 at 2:50pm, a strong earthquake struck the northeastern part of Japan. It was so strong that it also affected the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. I was at Tokyo DisneySea that afternoon taking photos of the Duffy Cafe in Cape Cod. I managed to get my video camera out when the shaking began. Here are a few clips from that day.

Since after the earthquake, although there has been some new things I need to worry about in my daily life, such as the reliability and punctuality of transportation methods (especially trains) deriving to an electric shortage caused by the damages to the nuclear power plant, there isn't a huge difference from before - everything has just become a bit inconvenient, at a level I can bear. The news of the day was that, the demand of electricity was expected to go over the supply level, so the electricity company had alerted that a huge blackout might occur in the evening. So everyone started to do what they could do to save electricity - Offices and stores turned off every electric advertisement signs, close their store earlier so they can turn off all of the electricity-consuming facilities and products.
