Tony Stewart Wins Kobalt 400 Las Vagas Motor Speedway NewsLink: goo.gl After starting the season on a restrictor-plate superspeedway at Daytona followed by a trip to the first intermediate oval race of the season at Phoenix, Sunday's Kobalt Tools 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway offered a true test of what will happen in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing this season. It was the first race on a 1.5-mile high-banked track -- the same design that dominates the Cup schedule and has become known as "cookie cutter" racetracks. The teams and drivers that excel on the those tracks are generally the ones that will battle it out for the Cup title. That is why it was no surprise to see last year's Cup champion, Tony Stewart, return to the front of the field. Stewart's start to 2012 was slowed when he was involved in a late-race crash in the Daytona 500 and was doomed in week two when an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) failed after he cut off the engine trying to save fuel late in the race at Phoenix. Stewart won for the first time at LVMS and, although he has 45 career Cup wins, it was just his second victory in March. On the track, he is the real deal, winning the series championship at NASCAR's premier level two times. Being one of only 15 drivers who have ever been crowned champion at least twice in NASCAR, which is America's top-tier stock-car race series and among the four most popular sports in America (the others being American football, baseball and basketball), Stewart also has a major open-wheel championship title under his belt in the 1997 Indy Racing League (IRL). Of course we've all watched a Nascar race on TV, but occasionally I like to share a few experiences that are unique, from my perspective....one of those being attending a Nascar race in person, and feeling the roar of the engines in your chest. I was totally hooked on Nascar years ago when the cars came around the track full speed on their first lap. There's absolutely nothing like it in the world!
