Tool-Assisted Speedruns - Are they cheating?

Title says it all. This is my view on tool-assisted speedruns, about cheating or not cheating. Feel free to comment and post your opinions on the subject. If you have a disagreement on something, please at least be formal about it. Tell why you think something is cheating, not just looking, and thinking, "Hey, I can't figure out how to do that. He must be cheating." Comments like "yes, TAS is cheating" or "STFU noob, its cheating no matter how you view it" will be deleted. Tell me why if you don't agree with me! I know alot about these games and how the process of creating a TAS works, so I could probably discern for you if it is or is not cheating. See, as for me, I think that a TAS itself appeals to another audience... not one who wants to see a video of someone beating the game in a humanly possible manner, but at the fastest possible time with the game pushed to its limits to do so, with bug exploits and all. It looks pretty cool, too. :) Bug exploiting is a whole new argument, but generally, people will make two different TAS's exploiting and not exploiting a bug if it makes a huge difference in gameplay, like cuts out a chunk of the game. In fact, there are two TAS's for many games, like SMB2, SMW, and SM64.

Water Temple (OoT) ~ A Tool-Assisted Speedrun

This isn't actually complete, as I intend to show the boss battle as well. But I'm still working on that, and due to popular demand, I uploaded it as it is. When the one with the boss battle is done, I'll just delete this one and replace it with that. The goal of this run is the complete the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time in as low a time as possible. It was made using slowdown, savestates, and re-recordings on an emulator, and is designed to provide entertainment to the viewer, and nothing else. It is in no way meant to show skill. And you'll notice that there's some horrible lag every time the game is paused. This is an issue with the emulator, and there is no known fix for it at the moment, so you'll just have to live with it. Enjoy.

Super Mario World Glitches 1 (Old) (Tool-Assisted)

There is a new, updated video I've uploaded! Go here instead! www.youtube.com Old description (kinda edited): ___________________ A video containing a bunch of glitches (in one badly designed level) possible in Super Mario World. All of these glitches, some with enough luck, can be done on the actual Super Nintendo. I mostly do the main ones, though. You might want to skip from 2:00 - 3:12, since it's just jumping on Wigglers. Random note: I thought that the part when I kept jumping while climbing on the vine in the cave was very unnecessary... After I finished this, I figured out that the Yoshi+Springboard Jump (or whatever you want to call it) can make you jump a lot higher if you hold down the B button. I thought that the part with the shell and 7 Koopas was just stupid... I even missed getting another extra life at the end! I don't even know why I put that in... This video is tool-assisted. Since this is one of my old videos, I used slowdown to make this, rather than frame advance. Most glitches were found on this page: tasvideos.org Faster one for no reason at all: (Video deleted!) ___________________ You know, looking back at this video, there's so many things I've done that I really, really don't like...

Another one of these, and it's only my third full TA run through arcade. As always, difficulty is 8 and bonus stages are off; and funnily enough Q didn't appear... why? No one knows. Disabling bonus stages does not disable Q's appearance at all, as you can see in both Dudley and Akuma TAS that I made. Very strange bug. Enjoy.

This is my latest TAS of Super Metroid, and it improves the last 100% TAS by about 2 minutes and 30 seconds of realtime, or about 1 minute and 50 seconds ingame. It uses a slightly altered route devised by hero of the day, which involves running through parts of norfair without a suit, and putting of wavebeam until after Ridley. The new route saved over 10 seconds. Other major improvements are the torizo skip which saves around 21 seconds, and the glitched mother brain battle wihch saves around 15 seconds. All the rest of the time is saved by using better room strategies, having a higher general level of optimization, and optimizing door transitions for realtime. NOTE: Optimizing doors for realtime might often look weird and slow, jumps and such before and through doors are made to reduce the time it takes from entering a door until you get into the next room. SNES Family Feud "Glitchfest" TAS by Heisanevilgenius

Sorry about the quality, I'm playing around with encoding and I wanted a relatively small file for Youtube. The sound is glitchy because of the emulator. This is a Tool-Assisted Speedrun, or TAS, of Family Feud for the SNES. This was made using an emulator with the use of slowdown, frame advance, and the ability to re-record through the use of save states. The author aimed for entertainment over fastest time. Notes from the author: "This is a glitchfest run, meant to show off how you can abuse the word recognition program. I used Snes9x v1.43+ v9. * Is a demonstration * Exploits glitches * Manipulates Luck WARNING: THIS TAS CONTAINS COARSE LANGUAGE The first bit of luck manipulation was to force the game to pick the shortest family name for my opponent. "Hall" is the shortest name, which means less time was used during the name-typing process. The fact that they appear as the most dumbfounded and shocked family when you beat them is an unintentional and hilarious side-effect. Each round, luck was manipulated to ensure there were as many answers as possible, to abuse word recognition as often as possible. Round 1 has twelve answers, round 2 and 3 each have six. While answers were carefully chosen to be as ridiculous and elaborate as possible and still count as correct, all other factors were chosen with speed in mind. The bullseye round is skipped and all answers are typed as fast as possible."

Puzzle De Pon! R! - Tool Assisted Speedrun

This is a Tool Assisted Speedrun of Taito's "Puzzle De Pon! R!". This game is similar (identical?) to Puzzle Bobble in the gameplay, with the difference that here the goal is to free a shape from the bubbles; every three levels there is a Zodiac sign, and since there are 39 levels, the last one is the Solar Symbol. Once all the levels have been completed, the player becomes the Sun God. Tool Assisted Speedrun means that this is played in a special emulator (Final Burn Alpha) which allows me to use features such as slow motion and savestates to overcome human limits and play (almost) perfectly. Sometimes the game just won't let you get the bubbles of the color you need, though, so some shots have to be wasted anyway. The garbage at the beginning of the video is me entering the service mode to set difficulty to level 8 (the hardest possible) in accordance to the usual guidelines for Tool Assisted Speedruns. This video doesn't show the ending because of the 10 minutes limit; however, I already uploaded a video of the ending some months ago, you can look for it in my profile if you're interested. I hope you'll enjoy this :)

Snake - Maximum score (tool-assisted)

I get the maximum possible score on the classic snake game. After googling for hours, this homebrew version for GBA was the only one I could find. If you know any others, for other consoles like NES, SNES, Gameboy, Master System, Genesis, GBA or Playstation, let me know. It's a little strange that it's so hard to find considering it's such a well known game, but it's such a simple game that it can't be sold alone, so it can only be included as a mini-game or in some kind of collection. The field in which you can move in the game is pretty small (8x13=104), so it was hard to write something recognizable with the snake's tail.

Tool-Assist is A-OK!

I've been wondering what people think about Tool Assisted combo videos. Smileymike has had many ideas for combos, and with his and MY lack of execution, those ideas are almost wasted, so what's wrong with using a computerized script to attempt those ideas, and expand on them, and take other things into account? Like transition set ups for when the video is edited! And all those little details that are hard to think of when in the moment! I mean, I have jumped off my chair before after landing a hardass combo, and then I realized I could totally have taunted at the end to make it transition to something else in another clip. You know, all those details that go into editing itself. Tool assist helps expand the combos and the potential of our combos, so why not make the best of it?! If you feel combos should be about practicality, then look at tutorials, cause combo videos are about style and technicalities that show off what is possible in our fighting games. Super Mario 64 Tool-Assisted Speedrun - Zero stars

At first there were 70 stars because Bowser demanded it. Then there were 16 stars because MIPS demanded it. Then there was 1 star because Bowser's Sub demanded it. Now there are none because the players at the site which made this movie are impatient and demanded the game be quicker. This run is played with an emulator, slowdown and flagrant abuse of save-states to correct any minor mistakes. As a result, Mario is not being controlled by a mere mortal and he can consistently do things a real human cannot. Anyone posting comments to the effect that this video is cheated, photoshopped or that the player is the best player alive obviously hasn't read this description. So sit back and watch Super Mario 64 be taken apart like it's never been before. Here's something a little different. I kicked away the formula I used for the past 4 Ta fights, and present here something which, I hope, shows more solid sort of playing rather than unrealistic -- regarding the usage of parrying, reactions and counters, that is. It's still crazy as ever, and I made it a point to not make long sessions of parrying between the two fighters. Also this way I can showcase all supers for both characters. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time TAS by Bloobiebla (2:51:19.1)

***READ BEFORE WATCHING*** www.youtube.com That is the author of the run's channel. Subscribe to it if you enjoy this run. This tool-assisted speedrun aims to complete The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in as little time as possible, while getting every Spiritual Stone and Medallion, and completing every Trial in Ganon's Castle. The author does this by exploiting many tricks and glitches, which would not be seen in a modern any% run. This run was made on an emulator, with slowdown,frame-by-frame shooting, savestates and rerecords. It is NOT meant to show skill, but rather the game pushed to its limits. It is only supposed to provide entertainment. You must bear this in mind when watching this video, or any TAS, for that matter. A lot of effort was put into this run. It is the result of many long months of tedious testing and optimal playing, but it has certainly payed off. When commenting, consider the amount of effort and time it would take to make a run like this. It's not worthless because it wasn't done on a console. Tool-assisted speedruns are arguably more difficult to do well than real speedruns, due to how difficult it is to achieve perfection and still make it look entertaining. Any anti-TAS comments (these include comments like "do it on a console, then I'll be impressed," "you suck for using an emulator," "cheater," etc) WILL be deleted on sight, and the poster will be permanently blocked from posting comments at any of my videos, or on my channel. SNES - Contra 3 : Alien Wars Tool Assisted Speedrun In 03:23

Tool Assisted Speedrun This is a glitched up run of Contra for the Super Nintendo (note that I myself didn't discover the glitch), it is completed in less than 3 and a half minute. The glitch works so that if you die with 0 extra lives left and during the fadeout manage to get a extra life, you complete the level instantly! The glitch can't be preformed in stage 2 and 5 which are completed fully (thankfully the two shortest stages in the game). You gain an extra life when you reach a certain amount of points so the method used to gain a extra life while being dead is to use a bomb. Why does the glitch work? This is only a guess but I think that the level complete fadeout and game over fadeout probably are the same function, and during it the game just checks if you have any extra lives left to decide which one to go to.Tool Assisted - these games are played using a emulator at super slow speeds and save states. The goal is to provide entertainment by showing off game glitches and beating the game as fast as possible. read more: tasvideos.org - Aims for Fastest Time - Uses Death as a Shortcut - Abuses Programming Errors - Manipulates Luck - Played on Hardest Difficulty
