I shot this video of the tornado that hit Bridgeport (Jackson County) Alabama during the late afternoon of April 27, 2011. The tornado killed a teenage boy and seriously injured his mother, injured scores of others and caused major damage to many parts of the city. This video segment was taken from the edge of the depot grounds across from Soulard Square and the Bridgeport Police Department parking lot looking towards the railroad depot and Battery Hill. The tornado tore a path of destruction through the southside of the city before crossing the Tennessee River where it destroyed thousands of trees in Hog Jaw Valley, several homes and the old Harris Chapel church building. In addition, it severely damaged Harris Chapel Cemetery with many gravestones broken, trees downed and at least one grave opened by an uprooted tree. The position of the tornado in the video was about one-mile away and just crossing the river. It was traveling about 50 mph and had hit the Concord portion of the the city about two minutes before where the worst devastation was suffered . Update 5-4-2011: The National Weather Service has given this tornado a preliminary rating of EF-4 with a width of 3/4 of a mile and total length 38.5 miles, which includes 18 miles into Marion County, Tennessee. This video has several different clips of the storm that hit the northwest suburbs of the St. Louis area on Friday April 22. Starts off with the storm developing south of Columbia, MO. Then we go through the core of the storm which produces golf-ball sized hail around the town of Hermann. We catch back up to the storm in the far western suburbs of St. Louis. Finally the tornado touches down after dark in the city of Bridgeton, MO. Semi-trucks are overturned, debris flying everywhere, transformers blowing up. We end up about 2 miles west of Lambert St Louis Airport when power lines go down right in front of us across the road.
