Red Dread: Toxic sludge spill swallows towns, kills 4 in Hungary

Hungary has declared a state of emergency in three regions after deadly toxic sludge flooded two villages on Monday, killing four people. It happened when a waste reservoir at an aluminum plant burst. Around 120 people were taken to hospital suffering from chemical burns. Emergency services say the clean-up's almost complete and are trying to neutralize the toxins by pouring plaster into the sludge.

Toxic sludge reaches Danube river, eco disaster spreading outside Hungary

Officials from several nations along the Danube, downstream from Hungary - Croatia, Serbia and Romania - have been testing the river on Thursday, hoping that the river's huge water volume would blunt the impact of the Hungarian red toxic sludge spill. Europe's second longest river, Danube flows through Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova before emptying into the Black Sea. The toxic sludge burst out of a metals plant reservoir and flooded three villages in Western Hungary, killing at least four people, injuring 120 and leaving three missing. It reached the mighty river Danube on Thursday, but a Hungarian emergency official said no immediate damage was evident. Experts are expecting contamination levels to peak over the weekend.

Mars on Earth: Eco disaster in Hungary after red aluminum toxic sludge

Hungary says it will take at least a year and cost millions of dollars to clean up the damage caused by a spill of industrial toxic red sludge. Emergency workers are trying to stop the substance flowing into major waterways. A state of emergency has been declared in three western counties after the chemical waste burst from a reservoir, killing 4 and injuring 120 others. Authorities have called the toxic spill an "ecological disaster".

TOXIC MUD KILLS IN HUNGARY

damburst of toxic sludge that killed at least four people and left scores needing treatment for chemical burns and other injuries could take up to a year to clean up, officials said Wednesday. "The clean-up and reconstruction could take months, even a year," Environment Secretary Zoltan Illes said. On Monday, the retaining walls of a reservoir at an aluminium plant in Ajka in western Hungary collapsed, sending a toxic soup of industrial waste cascading through seven villages. The devastation spread across an area of 40 square kilometers (15.4 square miles) in what officials say is Hungary's worst-ever chemical accident. Three adults and one child were killed and 123 people were injured, while three people are still missing. Karoly Tily, the mayor of Kolontar, the village where all four victims died, declared Wednesday a day of mourning, and the company which owned the reservoir, the Hungarian Aluminium Production and Trade Company (MAL), said it would foot the costs of the funerals. Illes told online publication Langlovak in an interview that the overall costs of the clean-up and reconstruction "could reach tens of millions of euros (dollars)." If MAL was unable to drum up the funds, "the sum will be borne by the Hungarian government, or it might be necessary to ask the European Union for aid," he said. The tidal wave of sludge overturned cars, swept away possessions and raised fears that pollution leeching from it could reach the Danube River, which courses through ...

Hungary red sludge spill as big as Gulf of Mexico leak?

The mighty river Danube seems to have absorbed Hungary's massive red sludge spill with little immediate damage, but laboratory tests heightened concerns about possible longer-term harm caused by toxic heavy metals in the slurry. Estimates of the size of Monday's catastrophic spill have already been compared to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. The reservoir break at an alumina plant dumped up to 700000 cubic metres (184 million gallons) of sludge onto three villages - not much less in a few hours than the 200 million gallons the blown-out BP oil well gushed into the Gulf over several months beginning in April. Efforts are being made to stop the the pollutants from flowing into the Danube following the spill of chemical waste. Meanwhile, a fifth person, an 81-year-old man, died Friday from injuries sustained in the torrent.

Red sludge reservoir 'ready to collapse' as Hungary fears 2nd toxic spill

The walls of a red sludge reservoir in Hungary were "very likely" to collapse, the prime minister said on Saturday as the government rushed to prevent another deluge like the one earlier this week that killed at least 7 people. The town of Kolontar next to the reservoir and was badly damaged in Monday's flood, was evacuated as a precaution because engineers have determined that the developing cracks could cause a whole side of the enormous container to collapse. An estimated 500000 cubic metres more of red sludge could escape from the reservoir if the wall collapsed.

NASA satellite image shows horrific scale of Hungary toxic sludge disaster

On October 9, 2010, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured natural-color image of the toxic spill area in Hungary. Heavy machinery was put to work in the sludge affected village of Kolontar, Hungary, as construction continued on a containment wall to protect the area in case of a new toxic flood. The town was the worst affected of three villages flooded when a damaged storage pool dumped 700-thousand cubic metres (184 million gallons) of toxic red sludge over the area, killing at least eight people last week. The wall - 620 metres long (2-thousand foot) and an average of 2.7 metres (8.8 feet) high - was being built with dolomite rock and clay. The damaged reservoir still contains 2.5 million cubic metres of sludge, but it no longer has a large layer of water on top, so any new spills are expected to move slower and travel less distance, probably no more than 1 kilometre (0.62 miles), than the first one did. Toxic Red Sludge Floods Hungarian Towns

The Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency in a number of towns on Tuesday, a day after a reservoir at an alumina refining plant in Ajka burst its banks, unleashing a massive flood of caustic red sludge. The flood is estimated to be at least 700000 cubic meters, or 185000 million gallons of caustic red sludge covering some 16 square miles. Experts say that the spill could have devastating environmental consequences and it threatens to pollute the Danube river, causing long-term damage to ecosystems and killing fish and vegetation. www.timesofearth.com BUDAPES - Hungary has declared a state of emergency in three counties following a toxic red mud spill that has killed four people and left another 120 injured. A reservoir of residue from an aluminium plant broke on Monday night, releasing corrosive sludge that swamped Kolontar and Devecser, two villages in western Hungary. "We have declared a state of emergency in Veszprem, Gyor-Moson-Sopron and Vas counties," a government spokesperson said on Tuesday. The sludge was reported to be threatening at least another two counties. Zoltan Illes, the environmental state secretary, said one million cubic metres of red mud had poured out of the containment pond at the Ajkai Timfoldgyar Zrt plant. He described the incident as the worst-ever chemical accident in Hungary, saying: "It's an ecological catastrophe". The red mud is a toxic residue left over from aluminium production and contains harmful substances such as lead, as well as highly corrosive elements. "The ceiling is three metres high, and the sludge was two metres 50 high," one local resident told state television. "My child was at home, he managed to make a run for the roof. My father is 85, he tried to make me hold on to the window, but he had to be taken to hospital with severe leg injuries." Rescue teams wearing protective clothing and masks worked overnight to wash the toxic substance off the streets. News Update: What is Red Sludge and how toxic is it?

The BBC is reporting that the toxic sludge spill in Hungary, which has already killed four and injured dozens, is now making its way toward Europe's second-longest river, the Danube. The sludge is a by-product from the early stage of aluminum production. About 40%-45% of the waste is iron-oxide, which gives it the red color. Professor Paul Younger of the Newcastle Institute for Research on Sustainability at Newcastle University says that, in the most concentrated areas, the sludge can be compared to kitchen cleaning products, which can cause dry, cracked skin and, in with prolonged contact, can even "lift off the top layer of your skin." Many have already suffered burns from the spill, with at least 120 people receiving treatment. Experts say the effects of the sludge are only more serious if the substance is ingested, which can then cause damage to lungs and the digestive system and be fatal in some instances. Some studies have found that the inhalation of titanium dioxide and silicon dioxide dust, substances found in the red sludge, caused cancer in animals. However, this has not been proved in humans and Prof. Younger believes the concentration of these substances in the sludge is too small to cause any harm.

I compiled this information from the Internet on the disaster in Hungary after I took a look @ the area on Google Earth. I was shocked 2C the size of this site. 2C so much toxic waste contained in one reservoir & not in some kind of Containment tomb of some kind was very disturbing. After the Gulf catastrophe & which is still there but we are not seeing it all. Our media & Gov seems to like to want us to believe everything is A-OK down there but it isn't. While our Prez is back on the campaign trail. Shouldn't he be doing his job? This really has frightened me as to what the hell is next? I had to put something together. Things r not right people. The Hungarian government has declared a state of emergency after a flood of chemical waste burst from a reservoir at an aluminum plant near the village of Kolontar. According to MAL, the Hungarian Aluminum Production and Trade company that owns the Ajka plant, the red sludge is not considered hazardous waste under European Union standards. As the toxic sludge from a Hungarian industrial plant readched the Danube, it emerged that all the fish had died in the Marcal, the river closest to the spill. The red sludge has wiped out life from the Mosoni-Danube river, a southern ranch of the Danube river, one of Europe's largest waterways. Officials said that the Marcal, a tributary to the waterway, has also been devastated by the sludge. Environmental officials said the effect on the Marcal river was worse than expected but added that ...

Race to Clean-Up Toxic Spill in Hungary

Disaster crews fight to clean-up the effects of a toxic spill in western Hungary, as Greenpeace says the area's future may be grim. Disaster crews in western Hungary continue to fight the effects of a toxic spill which swept through local villages on Monday. Workers removed sludge-covered furniture from homes and hosed down contaminated streets. Their aim is to dilute the spill's chemical content before it can pollute the nearby Danube River -- a major European waterway where it's already reached. A spokesman for Greenpeace said even if the spill's effects are contained, the local environment may have a bleak future. [Balazs Tomory, Spokesperson for Hungarian Greenpeace]: "Some areas could look like the planet Mars for long years. No flora or fauna will be present and also it could result in dead rivers like the Tolna, and the big question now is the dust. If this mud in this red toxic sludge gets dry the wind can transport heavy metals." The spill originated from an alumina plant some 160 kilometers west of Budapest, leaving four people dead in its wake. Over 150 people were also injured, and three people are still reported missing. The toxic sludge was comprised of corrosive waste from the bauxite refining process. Hungary's prime minister has called the spill the country's worst disaster of its kind. Meanwhile, the alumina plant's owner said there were no signs of the impending catastrophe when the plant was last inspected on Monday.
