Trapped Chile Miners Conditions Improve

New video footage shows trapped miners in Chile receiving food parcels and other essentials. The men are shown to be in good health, and very appreciative of all the support they are receiving. A new video shot by the trapped Chilean miners released on Wednesday shows they are clean, healthy and more confident than in last week's recording. In the five-minute video the men are seen receiving new beds, food and water supplies through a narrow shaft - their only connection to the outside world. One miner narrated the video, showing the holes where shipments, know as "palomas" or doves by the miners, arrive. The trapped miners are very grateful for the rescue efforts. [Mario Sepulveda, Trapped Miner]: "We thank you for the concern you have had with us, especially our government. The truth is that we are very proud and very happy to be Chilean and we are even more glad and proud to be miners." [Victor Segovia, Trapped Miner]: "Greetings to everyone out there. Many thanks for all your effort and for working 24/7. We are very grateful to you and we will have the patience to wait until you rescue us." Rescuers started drilling a 26-inch diameter shaft on Monday evening that will be used to evacuate the miners one at a time in a cage attached to a pulley. Health officials have sent them high-protein, high-calorie foods in narrow plastic tubes, to help them build up their strength after spending 17 days entombed before they were found alive. The miners have given priority to the ...

Trapped Miners in Chile Still Alive

Emotions are running high throughout Chile as word comes that trapped miners are still alive. Ecstatic over the news, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera proposes improvements for work safety conditions. Chilean miners, still alive 17 days after a cave-in, were sent supplies of saline and glucose through a narrow drill hole on Monday. Rescuers now face a months-long, half-mile dig to rescue them. In what relatives call a miracle, the miners on Sunday tied a note to a perforation drill that had bored a shaft the circumference of a grapefruit to the refuge where they are sheltered, 2300 feet vertically underground. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: (male, Spanish) "I am sure that in all the homes of Chile, there were tears of happiness, of emotion, because after 17 days of being trapped and captive in the depths of the mountain which is 2300 feet deep, 33 miners - 32 of them our compatriots and one son of a neighbor country - they showed the world that not only are they alive, but much more than that - that they are united, that they are strong, that they are fighting." Pinera has sacked top officials of Chile's mining regulator and vows a major overhaul of the agency in light of the accident. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: (male, Spanish) "There will not be impunity, and I want to stress that the investigations - criminal as well as civil - have been initiated and we are going to investigate those responsible and punish those who are to blame." News Update: Trapped miners could remain stuck until Christmas

Chile's president, Sebastian Pinera, announced Sunday that 33 miners trapped 2300 ft in the ground for the past 17 days were still alive. The miners were working at a San Jose gold and copper mine north of Santiago when the rock above them collapsed on August 5th. The men passed a note through a bore hole that read, "All 33 of us are well inside the shelter". A camera lowered through the bore hole on Sunday showed the miners sweaty, but in good condition and high spirits. Until Sunday, there had been no sign that the miners had survived. The miners will be given fresh supplies of food and water, but it will take at least 120 days, or 4 months, to carve a second shaft wide enough for the miners to be extracted one at a time. Few rescues take more than a couple weeks.

Trapped Chilean Miners Receive Help, Hope

Thirty three Chilean miners trapped underground receive supplies, medication, and even a call from Chile's president. Rescue workers and family members of the 33 Chilean miners trapped underground are confident that all the men will make it out alive. Engineers continue to send hydration gel and medication through a narrow bore hole. They have even dropped an intercom down to the trapped miners. Maria Segovia, the sister of one of the trapped miners, is praying that they remain safe. [Maria Segovia, Siser of Trapped Miner]: "We hope that God continues to save as many lives as he has saved so far. We've managed to get deeper into the mine which allows for more communication with the men, including my brother and everyone else." After a section of mine collapsed, the miners took refuge in an area the size of a small apartment, some 4.5 miles into the mine. Tanks of water and ventilation have helped the men survive. Before the help arrived they rationed out the provisions they had; two mouthfuls of tuna and half a glass of milk every 48 hours. But things are looking up now that rescuers on the surface have made contact with the group. They even received a call from Chile's president, who told the miners that their struggle had united the Chilean people. [Sebastian Pinera, President of Chile]: "Don Luis, I know it's been hell. But it's a hell that's meant a resurrection of spirit and strength to our country. You've given us an example that I, President of Chile, appreciate ...

NASA Helping Trapped Miners in Chile

With 33 Chilean miners facing months of confinement, NASA is sending a team of experts to Chile on Monday to supply the government with tips on how it keeps astronauts aboard the space station both physically and mentally fit. Dr. Michael Duncan is NASA's deputy chief medical officer. [Dr. Michael Duncan, NASA Deputy Chief Medical Officer]: "NASA has had a long experience in dealing with isolated environments, in particular currently on the space station. We train and plan contingencies for emergencies." The miners were found alive one week ago - 17 days after a cave-in at a small gold and copper mine in Chile's remote north, but it could take up to four months to dig them out. [Dr. Michael Duncan, NASA Deputy Chief Medical Officer]: "NASA is providing advice. The Chileans are very well organized. They have a lot of resources at their disposal. They have done a lot for the miners and in fact the miners have done a lot for themselves underground to show the will to survive and to organize themselves to be able to survive this long. So our plan is to go down and provide the advice that the Chileans have requested in the areas of nutritional support and behavioral health support." The 33 miners have not yet been given an exact time-frame, but have been promised they will back with their families by Christmas.

Trapped Chile Miners Celebrate Independence Day

Deep underground, the 33 trapped Chilean miners celebrate the bicentennial of their country's independence. As the South American nation held parades and celebrations on Saturday, the trapped men could be seen on video chanting 'Chile!' and dancing with the national flag. After watching a parade to mark the anniversary, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera sent a personal message to the miners. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: "I want to send a very affectionate message to the (trapped) miners. We would have like to have had them here, at Moneda, for the (September) 18 (bicentennial celebrations). As we have said many times, the work (to free them) is advancing." Relatives outside the mine were moved as they watched video of the men celebrating. [Carolina Lobos, Daughter of Trapped Miner]: "It was just as emotional as when we raised the flag out here, just as emotional to see them dance to the flag and raise our patriotic flag together to all the comrades below, independent of their being 700 metres down below. It was very emotional for all of us who are living through this." The men enjoyed a special menu prepared by chefs at the San Jose mine. In one of the most challenging mining rescues ever, engineers are boring successively wider holes using three drills to free them. The men are not expected to be rescued until late November.

Rescue Work Continues for Trapped Miners in Chile

There's some hope for the Chilean miners who have been trapped underground for several weeks now. Rescue workers have started to drill an escape shaft, but it could take months to complete. Workers prepare to start drilling an escape shaft to rescue 33 trapped Chilean miners. The bid to rescue the miners will be extremely challenging. It could take between two to four months. The head engineer says a vertical shaft will lead straight down to the miners' shelter. [Andre Sougarret, Engineer in Charge of Rescue Operation]: "We're already making the last connections and in that way we hope to initiate this construction of the vertical shaft that's near 90 degrees, just over the shelter where the men are." The miners have been trapped since a cave-in 25 days ago. They are stuck in a hot and humid tunnel 700 meters, or 2300 feet underground. The confined space could affect their psychological health and doctors told them to move to a deeper location to reduce exposure to humidity.

Rescue Operation Edges Closer for Trapped Miners

Chile's President Pinera says the rescue of 33 trapped miners is closer than ever. Rescue workers are preparing to winch them out of a narrow rescue shaft in special capsules. Here's more. Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said on Monday the rescue of the 33 miners trapped below the Atacama desert is 'closer than ever'. The men were left marooned 700 meters (2300 feet) deep in the small gold and copper mine by an August 5th cave-in, but their dramatic story may come to end as early as tomorrow. The Chilean government has spared no expense in conducting one of the most complicated rescue efforts in history, and Pinera thanked those who have helped. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: "I want to thank all the countries that have helped us, the rescue workers, the relatives. The rescue will probably be Wednesday. But it's not important whether it will be Tuesday or Wednesday or Thursday, it's important they be rescued alive having taken all the measures to ensure their security." Rescue workers are preparing to winch the miners out of a narrow rescue shaft in special capsules. Pinera is heading for the mine to be with the families to take in the emotional release. [Sebastian Pinera, Chilean President]: "The rescue is closer than ever. I intend to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, with all the relatives and wait with them for the wonderful moment when we're able to rescue them from the bowels of the mountain.
