Chile's president, Sebastian Pinera, announced Sunday that 33 miners trapped 2300 ft in the ground for the past 17 days were still alive. The miners were working at a San Jose gold and copper mine north of Santiago when the rock above them collapsed on August 5th. The men passed a note through a bore hole that read, "All 33 of us are well inside the shelter". A camera lowered through the bore hole on Sunday showed the miners sweaty, but in good condition and high spirits. Until Sunday, there had been no sign that the miners had survived. There's some hope for the Chilean miners who have been trapped underground for several weeks now. Rescue workers have started to drill an escape shaft, but it could take months to complete.
