Here's the fast way: www.youtube.com Basically- 1. dump the strings with the trem bar (I do this like Dime did by turning the bar to point away from the headstock and then pulling up on it), ...don't dump it all the way, you'll need to flick the G string on the way down. 2. tuck the tip/edge your middle finger under the G string, 3. flick up with your middle finger to sound the G string, 4. quickly tap on the natural harmonic over the 4th fret on the G string with your index finger, mute the high-e with your pinky by applying light pressure, mute the b-string with your ring finger, and finally mute the low-e, a, and d strings with your thumb. Sounds like alot to do, but think of it like a chord and look at the vid @ exactly 0:48 5. raise the note to pitch with the bar and give it a little wiggle if you must! This is pretty much to do the big squeal in Cemetery Gates right after Phil screams "GAAAAAATES!" This is how to do Dimebag squeals. I learned this trick in an old Guitar World article that Dime used to write. I love learning cover songs and ripping them out, but as a rule I never do Pantera. I've never heard a Pantera cover that did Dime justice and I definitely won't be the first one to pull it off! Rock On!

Based on the Chocolate Starfish guitar tab book. Played with a 7 strings guitar: C# - F# - B - E - G# - C# - C#. Played with a 6 strings guitar tune down a step and a half giving: C# - F# - B - E - G# - C#. Verse: harmonic at the 4th fret and w/trem bar pointed backwards, strike bar rapidly to cause pitch to go sharp.

This was a very special few moments of improvisation. I used A aeolian (A natural minor) mostly but I see a dorian phrase or two in there. I tried to get it to sound a little more "outside" with an occasional chromatic/altered tone always remembering to keep the lines in the tonal orbit, which gives aeolian its character. I even like the sloppy trem bar work as it contributed to the unsettled quality of the whole session. This is a really great backing track and it enabled a flow of ideas to come forth that where very descriptive. After listening, it gave me a vibe of an onimous storm approaching. From there it was obvious to color it up with a bit of thunder and guitar lightning. Out of all the improvisations I've done this one is my favorite. This is "in the zone" playing as I don't remember even a second of this one. Kind of chill music verses acid jazz. Remember, if you want to learn the techniques of improvising, you have to keep an open mind. Churning out note after note doesn't lend itself to descriptive playing. Say something with your notes and you will hear the difference.

Westone Spectrum FX put through its paces. This is one of the last versions of the Spectrum made in May of 1986 and features a scooped out heal, earlier versions would have a typical stepped setneck heal. When SLM changed the name from Electra to Westone (around October of 1984), the Phoenix models were also renamed to Spectrum, with the FX replacing the top of the line X199 Phoenix. This one is totally original, down to the inverted knobs and strap buttons, just a really nice example that has mellowed to a off White, almost Yellow color. It would have been a striking pearl white when new. Missing the Trem bar. Got one? Give me a holler! Sports the super versatile H/S/H pickup setup with the 3 push pull switches built into the vol/tone knobs. First switch is a coil cut for the humbuckers, 2nd switch turns on the middle single coil, 3rd switch reverses the phase of the Bridge Humbucker. Lots and lots of different pickup combinations are possible with this uncluttered layout. Some of the tones are subtle, and most players find 5 or 6 tones they like and can get to easily. All of the Phoenix/Spectrum guitars are well built, under-valued guitars, and the FX represents the pinnacle of this design with the all Maple body and scooped out heal. Thanks!

Improvising a "melodic" solo is one of the greatest challenges for any guitarist, prog or otherwise. This is because it's so personal, requiring the player to draw both upon their knowledge of the fretboard and their own interpretation of "soul." Some of the great melodic prog players are Steve Howe, David Gilmour, Steve Hackett and lesser-known, but supremely gifted soloists like Bill Nelson (ex-Bebop Deluxe) or Roine Stolt of the Flower Kings. In this improv, I was playing over a rhythm track based largely in E major, with the occasional, brief modulation to E minor. Instead of running up and down the E major scale (Ionian mode), I tried to jump around the strings, constructing non-linear shapes and arpeggios (ie, notes *not* in a row), and land on interesting chord tones, such as the major 6th and 7th, and also the 9th (F#). This creates more interest and tension than always landing on the 1st (root), 3rd or 5th. To add interest, it's useful to add a variety of techniques, too. Here I used both wrist vibrato and mechanical (whammy bar) vib. You can also bend strings, either with the typical whole step or the sometimes more interesting half-step bends, something I picked up from Steve Lukather. There's a fair amount of legato runs in there, as well as trem-bar work reminiscent of Allan Holdsworth. And it's hard to talk about melodic rock playing without mentioning Carlos Santana, certainly one of the most melodic and soulful guitarists in rock history. The net effect of <b>...</b>
