Wynton Marsalis - A Trumpeter's Lullaby

As controversial as he is popular, Wynton Learson Marsalis is one of the most prominent jazz musicians of the modern era and is also a well-known instrumentalist in classical music. Currently the Musical Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center Wynton Marsalis has received many awards for his musical proficiency. These awards run the gambit of Grammys to a controversial awarding of the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his three and half hour jazz oratorio CD box set Blood on the Fields, the first jazz album to win this award. Born in a musically oriented family in the New Orleans jazz scene at a young age Wynton was exposed to many legendary jazz musicians. Some of these musicians were Al Hirt, who gave Wynton his first trumpet when he was 6 years of age and Danny Barker, a legendary jazz banjoist who lead the Fairview Baptist Church band which Wynton was playing in when he was eight. Wynton was very active musically during high school and was a member in many New Orleans musical organizations such as the NO symphony brass quintet, the NO community concert band, NO youth orchestra, NO symphony and a popular local funk band called the Creators. In 1978 he had a two-year stay at the Juilliard School of Music before joining the Jazz Messengers to study under master drummer and bandleader, Art Blakey. Not long after that he toured with the Herbie Hancock quartet before forming his own band. After many concerts and workshops Wynton rekindled widespread interest in an art form that had ...

Rafael Mendez - Haydn Trumpet Concerto

In this second installment of the Rafael Mendez special entitled "The Trumpet," Mendez begins with discussing the origins of the trumpet and then plays an exceptional rendition of the third movement of the Haydn trumpet concerto. For those of you familiar with this piece it will be a breath of fresh air to hear Mendez's version. This was the first piece written for the keyed trumpet, and Haydn wrote this concerto to really showcase this brand new instrument. Unlike other classical trumpet performances of this piece where the trumpet sounds like a part of the orchestra, Mendez electrifies the show by playing with such vigor and virtuosity. I think Mendez is doing Haydn a great favor by playing this piece not as part of an orchestra, but as a trumpet player. Haydn intended this to showcase the trumpet, and Mr. Mendez does just that.

Alastair Miles sings "The trumpet shall sound"

Alastair Miles sings from Handel's Messiah: 45 Behold, I tell you a mystery - 46 The trumpet shall sound. Crispian Steele-Perkins is the trumpet soloist. Stephen Cleobury conducts the Brandenburg Consort. The Baroque trumpet being played here is valveless but has two finger holes which the trumpeter can close and open with the thumb and little finger of the right hand for fine pitch control. You should be able to see Crispian Steele-Perkins doing this in the video.

Marvin Stamm, Trumpeter

This tune is taken from Alexander Borodin's 2nd String Quartet and was made popular in the 1950's by trumpeter Jonah Jones. Bill Mays and I have been enjoying playing it for a while and decided to add it to the quartet's repertoire. The body is played in 3/4 time, but the "bridge," or middle section, is played in 4/4. www.marvinstamm.com presents "Alone Together," featuring Marvin Stamm, trumpet; Bill Mays, piano; Rufus Reid, bass; and Ed Soph, drums. These video clips are from the new Marvin Stamm Quartet DVD and CD set, "Alone Together." The concert from which this DVD and CD were filmed and recorded took place in California on November 5, 2006, following a week of performing concerts on the Jazz Cruise. One can talk and write about music, but in reality, it is all in the listening - and in this case, the seeing. As expressed by reviewer Dave Miele in JazzImprov magazine Jazz is a live music. "It's meant to be heard and seen in person." Marvin Stamm "I have much love and respect for these marvelous friends - Bill Mays, Rufus Reid, and Ed Soph - and for the music we create together. After my many years as a professional musician and these last seventeen years concentrating only upon performing as a Jazz artist, it is most rewarding to be at this place in this time in my life. It is a good place to be.

How to Form a Trumpet Embouchure - Trumpet Tips & Tricks with Charlie Porter

NYC Trumpeter, Charlie Porter, demonstrates the way to form a trumpet embouchure. Topics covered are aperture, mouthpiece placement, air direction and lip buzzing. Notes RE: video: While some players may have great success with playing in the red of the lips, blowing air downward or playing with closed lip positions, I believe that the advice I have given is sound and reliable. RE: Playing in the red of the lips (rim placement): Yes you can play in the red of the lip. I did it for years. However, it is fact, that the tissue is much softer and more prone to damage and only a few people who play on the red learn to do so without the added pressure that can cause damage. There is a reason that teachers like Armando Ghitalla changed each one of his students embouchure at the college level to have the lips placed inside the mpc. I'm not saying that I would do this for every student, but having thick fleshy lips myself, and having seen people with lips twice my size doing it, I know very well that it is possible. It is a personal journey for everyone, but we are all capable of it. That being said, if you have super chops galore and play in the red of your lip, then you really don't need to watch this video do you? If you can't fit them in, I'd be happy to show you how I managed it. RE: Blowing air straight ahead vs. downward (lip alignment) It is possible for people with even the most bizarre teeth formations, under bites and over bites to align their lips. How? Christopher Stephen Botti or Chris Botti [BOH-tee] (born October 12, 1962) is an American trumpeter and composer. Born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Corvallis, Oregon, he spent two years of his childhood growing up in Italy. His earliest musical influence was his mother, a classically trained pianist and part-time piano teacher. He plays a Martin Committee Handcraft trumpet made in 1940, and uses a 3 silver plated mouthpiece from Bach made in 1926, having recently retired his 1920 3C Bach mouthpiece. He counts Miles Davis among his most significant influences. Botti attended Mount Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon where he studied under Larry McVey whose renowned jazz program had come to be a regular stop for Stan Kenton and Mel Tormé when they were looking for new players. It was here he played alongside his friend, trombonist and future Academy Award nominated filmmaker, Todd Field. After leaving Mount Hood, Botti studied under David Baker and Bill Adam at Indiana University.
