This is a video description of how to set up TPN, Omegaven, and tube feeds in a regular backpack. This backpack was used for my infant daughter when she was on TPN/Omegaven, and also served as her diaper bag with my wallet in it, so it was the only thing I had to carry in addition to my baby. I had a laminated sign pinned to the front of the backpack that said "Medical backpack- ATTACHED TO BABY", which was convenient, especially in crowded places (like the T in Boston). The setup would also work well for an adult. This could be done with standard Intralipids as well, by clamping the lipids bag with the TPN bag, using the Hemostat clamp. You could also use a diaper pin through the holes at the top of the TPN/Intralipids bags to connect them to the backpack. The Intralipids pump would go inside the backpack, the same as the Omegaven pump did. My daughter Faith was born with gastroschisis, an abdominal wall birth defect where the intestines are on the outside of the body. She suffered from many complications as a result of her defect, including functional short bowel syndrome, and spent 9 months on TPN, 5 of those months on Omegaven to cure her TPN-Associated Liver Disease. At 4 months old, she had liver damage to such an extent, that the survival rate was only 22%. After only 30 days on Omegaven, her liver function tests were nearly normal, for the first time in her life! Omegaven saved her life, and has saved the lives of many other children suffering from Short Bowel <b>...</b>

Ainsley has a trach due to upper airway swelling. She is unable to eat and is fed with a gastrostomy tube. We make a blenderized diet of pureed foods that we give with a quick bolus tube feeding. I didn't point out - the extension is not empty when we start. It's got water in it from flushing after her last feed. After she is done eating, I flush with about 12 mL's of water through the med port into her belly, then throw the extension in the fridge with the food bag. It won't let me post a comment, so I'll reply here: We use Button Buddies instead of gauze. A fellow tubie-momma makes them, you can get them at mybuttonbuddies.com They are great!
I forgot to mention a few things. Like make sure you hold the syringe at the point where it plugs in to the extension so it doesn't unexpectedly become disconnected. Also, it is recommended that you give the Prevacid solutabs 30 min before a feed, but we have not noticed a difference with Harmony if we do it right before, so that's what we have opted to do. When I think of the other things I forgot, I'll add them here.

Rufus the blind bobcat kitten was believed to have been hit by a car on Dec 4th in South Carolina. He weighed just 4.2lbs, had a broken jaw, split canine and was comatose. After he woke up from the coma he was pretty loopy, the South Carolina rehabber figured the impact had done brain damage. They had to wire the jaw shut, tube feed him and remove the broken canine. He was taken in by Big Cat Rescue on Feb 12th 2012, he's now eating solids on his own and doing much better despite walking into walls and getting stuck in corners. He was having bad and frequent seizures, but those have almost subsided. Children and adults can take medications through their feeding tubes. It is best to get the medications in liquid form when possible. Some forms of medications are only available in tablets or capsules. Capsule based medications are NOT crushable and will need to be opened and added to water. Tablet medications will need to be crushed or mixed with water so that they can be administered through a feeding tube. It is very important to check with your pharmacist or doctor to ensure that your medication can be crushed. The following video demonstrate how to prepare and administer liquids and tablet medications through a feeding tube.

This Virginia opossum was bitten in the head by a big dog. He was bleeding profusely and practically unconscious when I picked him up.
