35000 students protest tuition fee increases

On Nov. 10th, over 35000 students took to the streets of Montreal to protest against tuition fee increases. The provincial government has decided to increase fees by 75 per cent over the next 5 years, adding over $1500 per year to a student's bill. As people become more and more concerned about levels of personal debt and job opportunities, students and their allies are calling on the government to focus on maintaining accessible education rather than increasing fees.

Quebec students protest university-fee rise

Tens of thousands of students in the Canadian province of Quebec have been protesting over plans to raise university fees. Until now, they have been paying just over $2000 a year, the lowest in the country. For seven weeks, there have been class boycotts, demonstrations and occasional angry confrontations with police. The students now plan to target Quebec's unpopular government. With an election expected next year, the students are threatening to use their votes to keep tuition fees low. Montreal Mayhem: 'Protests grow beyond just student issue'

Student protests in Canada escalate as nearly 700 people were arrested on Wednesday night alone. The rallies against the proposed tuition fee increases have been going on for over a 100 days in Quebec. Many of those detained were carted off in public buses, which police converted into temporary holding pens. The demonstrations swelled after Quebec's government passed emergency laws last week to make the protests more difficult to organize. 100000+ Quebec Students Protest Tuition Fee Hikes

11/10/2011 Tens of thousands packed Montreal's streets Thursday to protest a tuition increase proposed by the government of Premier Jean Charest -- an increase that march organizers said is tantamount to a declaration of war on students. Though exact numbers weren't available, some estimates put the crowd at around 200000. Many students carried signs and shouted slogans decrying the fee increase. During the largely peaceful protest, university and CEGEP students boycotted classes, and students from Dawson College in Montreal blocked the entrance to a metro station. The demonstrations peaked in the afternoon as the throng of students and supporters gathered downtown to march through Montreal's streets and toward government offices. In spite of the rain, protesters focused on Charest's Montreal offices, and police intervened when some projectiles were hurled and fireworks were set off. "This mobilization sends a clear message to the government that students will not accept higher tuition fees and will do everything in their power to overturn this decision," march organizers said in a statement. Organizers said that the rally was among the largest education protests in a decade. Quebec Finance Minister Raymond Bachand announced the province's tuition rates, by far lowest in the country, will increase by $325 a year over a five-year period as a means of increasing university funding and cutting provincial debt. The increases will result in an annual tuition price tag of $3793 ...

George Galloway on tuition fee protests in London

By John Hess: You couldn't find a bigger contrast. Walking into Westminster today, I noticed the debris of yesterday's student protest - rain-soaked leaflets and placards - had still to be cleared up. Today, the streets around Parliament belonged to another and older generation. They were gathering for the two-minute silence outside Westminster Abbey, some of them hoping for a glimpse of the Duke of Edinburgh. They were remembering friends and old comrades who died in past wars. After the two-minute silence was replaced by the roar of the London traffic, I asked an elderly couple their thoughts on the students' protest and the subsequent violence. They were appalled at the images on the TV news of the disturbances, but surprisingly supportive of the students and their case against increased tuition fees. That'll delight one student I met during the students' demonstration. She's Lucy Padolsey, a third year politics student from Loughborough University. She was one of thousands of students who would have marched passed Westminster Abbey during their lobby of Parliament. She's orginally from Surrey and will be the first to admit, she's from a typically middle-class background. "Students from middle-income families will be hit the hardest by these fees," she told me. Under the Coalition government's plans, tuition fees will double to £6000 a year - in some case up to £9000 - from 2012. Said Lucy: "I will have left university by the time the increased fees are introduced. But ...

Video: Violence erupts at 'illegal' student protest in Canada

Week-long demonstrations over a proposed rise in university tuition fees have erupted into violence in Quebec. Police in Montreal clashed with thousands of students who accuse the government of sabotaging negotiations for a settlement. Riot police have so far arrested 85 people after a government exclusion of a student group from talks triggered activist ire. Students have flooded Montreal's streets over the past few days, up in arms over tuition fee hikes that would see costs rise by 75 percent over the next five years. Thursday's riots were declared illegal after demonstrators reportedly pelted police officers with projectiles and threw garbage into the streets. Ontario Students Raise Voice & Protest for Fee Reduction

Toronto: Ontario students from different universities join hands against massive tuition fees. This clip shows students at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus, raising slogans such as "Drop Fees" and "Education is a right, we will not give up the fight". Note that Ontario government already announced a 30% fee reduction. But, the Canadian Federation of Students notes that during the election, the Liberals clarified that students in professional programs, part-time learners, and students independent of their parents will be ineligible for the grant, thus narrowing eligibility to just one-third of all students and potentially excluding students who need the grant the most.

Student Protests UK- tuition fees. Occupying Tory HQ, Violent police, montage of November 2010

The students need your help. - Share this video! Education is essential for a prosperous, peaceful society. Poorer students will be deterred from studying by the prospect of severe debt. This will create inequality, serving only to separate the classes further and damage our society. Every cut or raised fee is another step backwards from the evolving society we all strive for. Debt is what brought on the recession and they're asking us to walk further into the fire. Education should be a right. Our capitalist society is getting out of control. The working class are paying for the greed of the elite by bailing out the banks, losing jobs, taking pay cuts, increasing outgoings... and those responsible are simply walking away with big bonuses. Education is not just for an advanced career, better salary, or empowering a college graduate's job search. It's essential for learning, preparation for wise leadership and personal achievement, and contributing to our society with an open mind and new ideas. EDUCATION SHOULD BE FREE If the proposed tripling of fees go through, UK degrees will be one of the most expensive and worst funded in the world. It's not a fairer proposal despite paying back less each month. The debt is so much greater and for some, could take a lifetime to pay back. 'Cop brutality fuels fire of student anger in Canada'

160 protests within just two months - and Canada's student uprising continues unabated. And, with new clashes on Thursday night, the standoff over tuition fee hikes is turning increasingly violent. Centering on the country's second largest city of Montreal, clashes resumed after talks collapsed between student leaders and authorities. Riot officers charged, maced and detained dozens of protesters, while the police chief publicly complained that his forces were worn out. The students are incensed over a tuition fees rise which the government says is necessary. But journalist Bernard Desgagne, says heavy-handed policing will only provoke the students further. VIOLENT: Students smashing windows, London protest over tuition fees at 30 Millbank

A huge protest against the British government's plan to triple university tuition fees descended into violence today after hundreds of angry demonstrators smashed their way into the London headquarters of Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party. The scale of the London protest defied expectations, with an estimated 50000 turning out to vent their anger at government plans to raise tuition fees while cutting the state grant for university teaching. Britain's most senior police officer was tonight forced to admit he was "embarrassed" that his officers had lost control of the capital's streets in scenes reminiscent of last year's G20 demonstration. The mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said police should ask how a small minority of students had "shamefully abused their right to protest".

9/12/10 Tuition Fee Protest - What The BBC Didn't Report

This is a short video aimed to show my experience of the 9th Dec Tuition Fee protest. The mainstream media coverage of the demonstration focused on the violence of the students and failed to explain the full story. Yes there was violence - and doubtless a small number did just attend to cause trouble - but the majority of those who suffered at the hands of the police were just innocent protesters trying to leave Parliament sq after all exits were blocked. I, like over 1000 others, was kettled on Westminster bridge until 11.30pm after arriving in Parliament sq at 2pm. We live in a country that prides itself as an ardent upholder of human and civil rights, yet many of those like me who attended to exercise their rights of freedom of expression, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly was arbitrarily punished for their involvement in the protest. As the girl at the end of the film states, 'Something has to change.'
