SUNY Students Protest Tuition Hikes, Funding Cuts

Rally and March to Fight Enacted Tuition Hikes and NYSUNY2020. United under the banner of New York Students Rising, students from campuses across the SUNY system, including New Paltz, Binghamton, Geneseo and Albany, converges at the SUNY System Administration building for a brief rally. Students and allies march up to the Capitol, pushing a boulder representing the $1 trillion held nationally in student loan debt. After entering the Capitol, students present Governor Cuomowith a report card, a failing grade in reference to his unwillingness to defend New York State's system of higher education. This action is intended to highlight the unmanageable burden that the state is placing on students, raising tuition and cutting funding for SUNY while allowing the millionaires' tax to expire, giving a tax cut to the 1%. This action occurs in solidarity with a simultaneous march, led by other NYSR affiliates, on the CUNY Board of Trustees meeting in New York City. via/ www.saveoursuny.org

Occupy Student Debt: Students Urged to Refuse to Pay Off Loans As Schools Hike Tuition

www.democracynow.org - Monday was a day of action for university students on both coasts angered by the rising cost of tuition and the crackdowns on their recent protests. In California, students temporarily shut down a meeting of the University of California Board of Regents to protest a series of tuition hikes and the violent response to protests at UC-Berkeley and UC-Davis. Wary of a massive demonstration, the regents met by conference call from four different campuses but were still forced to switch venues after being confronted by chanting students at three of the four sites. In New York City, about a thousand students marched outside a meeting where City University of New York trustees voted to authorize annual tuition increases through 2015. The protests were the latest in a long-running battle against tuition hikes and education cuts that originated on UC campuses two years ago and quickly spread across the country. We speak with two guests who helped launch the "Occupy Student Debt Campaign" Pledge of Refusal, which asks student signatories to refuse their student loan debt until a number of education reforms are implemented, including free public education. Pamela Brown is a Ph.D student in Sociology at The New School, and Andrew Ross is a professor of social and cultural analysis at New York University. 100000+ Quebec Students Protest Tuition Fee Hikes

11/10/2011 Tens of thousands packed Montreal's streets Thursday to protest a tuition increase proposed by the government of Premier Jean Charest -- an increase that march organizers said is tantamount to a declaration of war on students. Though exact numbers weren't available, some estimates put the crowd at around 200000. Many students carried signs and shouted slogans decrying the fee increase. During the largely peaceful protest, university and CEGEP students boycotted classes, and students from Dawson College in Montreal blocked the entrance to a metro station. The demonstrations peaked in the afternoon as the throng of students and supporters gathered downtown to march through Montreal's streets and toward government offices. In spite of the rain, protesters focused on Charest's Montreal offices, and police intervened when some projectiles were hurled and fireworks were set off. "This mobilization sends a clear message to the government that students will not accept higher tuition fees and will do everything in their power to overturn this decision," march organizers said in a statement. Organizers said that the rally was among the largest education protests in a decade. Quebec Finance Minister Raymond Bachand announced the province's tuition rates, by far lowest in the country, will increase by $325 a year over a five-year period as a means of increasing university funding and cutting provincial debt. The increases will result in an annual tuition price tag of $3793 ...

Students yell to University of Illinois Pres. Hogan at a rally for tuition freeze

Students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Illinois-Chicago disrupted the U of I Board of Trustees meeting on Nov. 18th, after being refused to speak at the public comments section of the meeting. At the end of the meeting, students were shoved after demanding to be heard. Inside, the activists yelled "freeze tuition now" while being escorted out of the building. Outside, the students chanted and marched around. In the video, students yell "Shame on you!" to U of I President Hogan. Hogan is one of the highest paid university presidents in the US, totaling $620000. The recent increase in tuition of 9.5% last summer helps line the pockets of BoT members, while the Univ. of Illinois slides further into debt and Springfield cuts the higher education budget. The event was put on by the Undergraduate-Graduate Alliance at UIUC and Students for a Democratic Society at UIC. Education is a Right!
